Hot take: Maiden's first two albums are actually pretty underrated. Sure, it's not as refined as their later work, but it still has some of the strongest bangers they've ever written: Iron Maiden, Prowler, Phantom of The Opera, Remember Tomorrow, Killers, Wrathchild etc. It's pretty beloved around here in Brazil
Plus Paul is actually a pretty good vocalist and fitting in the style of the first 2(I actually took a photo with him :) ), despite Bruce being way better

The big weak point of that album is just how it's arranged. It starts out really strong (Lord of the Flies especially I feel is the most underrated Iron Maiden song of them all), but then there's three slow and somber songs about war, that together last 19 minutes and don't really feel connected to each other in any way.
It bogs the whole album down and it never recovers.
I did myself a different version of the album with better song order (also ditched couple and added one originally left out), and that made it so much better as a whole.

My favourite's the first one I owned, Killers. Later Maiden fell more into the "gallop", and sorry, but Nicko ain't a patch on dearly departed Clive Burr for me. Clive just has more groove.
I then flip-flop between Seventh Son, Beast and Powerslave. But for me, Somewhere in Time has the best album cover (I painted it onto my leather jacket, I loved that cover so much.)
I also love Blaze Bailey, but you're right, his work with Maiden wasn't the best.
But you should really check out the band he came from, Wolfsbane. Fun, high speed stuff, with an excellent guitarist in the heavily-EVH influenced Jase Edwards, who is one of my favourite guitarists of all time. While not technically the best, he plays with humour and has a distinctive character.
The EP "All hell's Breaking Loose Down at Little Kathy Wilson's Place" is their peak, being stupidly fun. You get to hear Blaze in his natural environment as part singer, part Brummie (well, Tamworth) raconteur, and Jase's guitar work is just sublime.
Jase is basically the Jackie Chan of the guitar world.
