The Hair Metal Guru
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ก.ค. 2023
Welcome to The Hair Metal Guru. My name is Anthony, and I'm a retired Army veteran and former high school English teacher who lives for music. Obviously the main focus here will be hair metal, and the content I plan on producing will run the gamut--there will be rankings of all kinds, reviews and commentary about albums or happenings in era of '80s hard rock, and commentary about bands current and past exploits. Does that mean I'll only talk about hair metal? Hell no. Could Bryan Adams creep into the conversation? Nirvana? Yes. But if you love hair metal, this is the place for you. Welcome to the show.
50 Songs We Loved In The 90s... NO HAIR METAL ALLOWED! Our Most Hilarious Episode EVER?

Hair Metal & Grunge: Were They Sell Outs Or Not?
มุมมอง 2.5K12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I've been thinking about this topic for a while... when do bands "sell out"? What if they write a song specifically to get a hit? What about if they dress a certain way? Were the grunge bands any less of a sell out than the glam bands were? I discuss this and more with Ryan and Mariah. Check it out!

Jani is a legend. Thank You for sharing your stories. My fav Warrant record is Dog Eat Dog...still fresh today. I missed an opportunity to see Warrant live at an Air Force base my half brother working at the time. I wish I went.
When it happened I didn't give Winger a chance but now I love the band and have bought this box set on CD thanks to Guru speaking highly of them. And I continue loving when you shit on the Mötley box set. 😂
Ironically I bought just a few days ago in cd the first two winger albums from the rock candy remasters
Nice that you chose the Jesus and Marychain. Solid band from the UK
Winger kicks ass !! I mean if you like rock n roll how can you NOT dig Reb Beach’s guitar playing and Rod Morgenstein on drums ? Kip on bass singing his ass off .. such a killer band and very unique and underrated as they brought a prog rock feel to their music especially from their second album forward .. still the best band I’ve ever seen live
i can here Beavis and butthead now lmfao !
Hey man, if you haven't yet, get the GnR Appetite box set. It's really cool!
I absolutely love Winger! Been a huge fan since their first album came in 1988 at ten years old. I still bought this boxset even though I already had them because these are remastered. They sound amazing. I love all seven of their studio albums big time. In my opinion they don't have any weak albums. My favorites are Karma, Seven, Pull, and Better Days Comin'. Winger did not deserve the crap they got from Metallica and Beavis And Butthead at all. I got picked on in Middle school and Highschool for being a Winger fan, but I didn't care. Still a huge fan to this day. I have met Kip Winger and Reb Beach and both were very cool.
Brooks Wackerman has been the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold since 2015
We have the same views on Winger! I enjoy your videos. I did not know that they had a box set.
The song Seventeen only getting to #19 is a small travesty
The musicianship in Winger is off of the charts. What an amazing band. Winger never disappoints!!!
I had to go with Wildside over Skid Row, I love both albums and have a lot of great memories with the first Skid Row album, but ultimately I like "Under the Influence" better. I really like these album wars videos. Some ideas could be Tigertailz "Bezerk" vs Sleeze Beez "Screwed Blued 'n Tattooed"; Vain "No Respect" vs Shotgun Messiah "S/T"; and Dirty Looks "Cool From the Wire" vs Rhino Bucket "S/T"
In preparation for this video I spent a couple of days with the Wildside album. It’s really good. If it had hit in 89 to 90 it probably would have blown up. One minor gripe is that in 92’ they were still using hair metal cliche’s . Regardless, the songs were strong and memorable. I’ll have to go with Skid Row as the better of the two albums. That’s another band you got me into, Anthony. How about comparing Shout At The Devil vs the first WASP album?
Motley , really since they started that Crue Fest Shitsaster , have been one giant money grab . The Dirt (Book) was their last great production . Something happen , Back in early 2000s when VH1 started the Behind the Music series , It launched a rebirth , but not sure in a good way. Anyway , Winger were as gifted as you will find , got damn Beavis and Butthead ..
Motley was a money grab crap
great video guru! $83 dollars? DAMN! nice score I completely agree with you, Winger is such an underrated band. Arguably the most talented band to come out of that era. The musical pedigree of every band member is absolutely off the charts. I'm really hoping they come to Toronto at some point, meeting Kip Winger is on my bucket list!
Definitely agree with you. I hope that you do get to meet Kip one day. He is a very cool guy.
I swear as good as Winger is they have never shed that underappreciated and underrated stigma. Every time I go back to them I like their stuff more and more. Maybe they were just a bit ahead of their time. Or maybe they were too clean. Seems like all the big names of the era had some kind of drama, haha. Cool vid, thanks guru!
Thanks!
Winger is one of my faves.!!! The W.A.S.P cd box set has a nice big book and its down to 109 on amazon. Brian loves moist lips 2:34

I have mad respect for Kip Winger. Dude carried on his dream and continued composing music with larger musician groups.
Ratt Rule's 🤘
Love the video and channel can’t get enough hair metal content the best music out there I think winger debut versus Cinderella night songs
For me that's a good price _if_ that would include postal costs, but it doesn't. It's a collector product, an investment I guess. Seems the demos are the only thing that is really desirable. Photos of magazines and lyrics is to me generic and non-interesting. Their personal pages can't contain much. If I did it, I'd include a CD with interviews/monologues or something like a short biography or "the making of xyz commentary". Is it better or on par with common box sets - probably? Looks nice. Ok, so I listened to Paul Aston's review where he says the remastering really makes a difference compared to the otiginals. This might be the deciding factor. His only complaint was that 2 songs of that era, which are as bonuses on a compilation album, haven't been included.
I agree the Motley Crue boxset was low budget. When you said $200 i was like no way. Maybe $50 at most. The Ratt and Winger boxsets were of better quality. Motley Crue just puts out shit and wonder why people shit on it. Nikki Sixx is an egotistical asshole.
The Purple Haze cover was great because it was its own interpretation, had groove, had prog. People shouldn't be so stuck in puritanism. I have the original Jimi albums too and nobody can emulate the soul fingerprint, the magic of Jimi himself. And so everyone is better off just doing the covers in their own way. Even if I didn't know Purple Haze was Jimi's song I know I'd enjoy Winger's version same as with the other songs and that's the criteria for me.
I have the same Winger box set and love it! They have always been my favorite next to my ultimate favorite Dokken! I’m really impressed with their newest album that I believe kicks major ass
Agreed
Totally agree, "Pull" is my favorite album of theirs too. I really like all seven Winger albums, they have been pretty consistent over the years, but for some reason I don't listen to them as much as other bands from the genre
Just so you know Who Made Who has sold over 5 million in America alone Great ranking
Winger kicks major ass probably the most talented band
Thank you for giving Kix some discussion.
Best live band I have ever seen.
Naming a band after a motley crue song is kinda rad 😂
Since you’re doing box set videos do you ever think poison is ever going to come out with a vinyl box set
Never listened to Wildside until listening to THMG. So, 10 things I think I think about U.T.I. 1. Lad in Sin ties with Hang on Lucy for the best song on the album. Even though it’s almost 6 minutes long, I did get close to getting bored. 2. If not for a killer solo, So Far Away would be a skipper, not that it sucks, just not a stand out. 3. They started back to back songs, Just Another Night and Looks Like Love, with two of the most lazy songwriting tropes… Outside my window…. Woke up this morning 4. All the ballads on UTI sound like they were circa 85-88. 5. They wasted the amazingly catchy riff in Looks Like Love on an average song 6. Wildside’s singer sounds like Mark Slaughter and Axle Rose had a kid…that’s a compliment 7. The best guitar solo on UTI is in Clock Strikes. 8. Hair of The Dog is 100x better than the original or any of the covers of the Nazareth’s Hair of The Dog. 9. I think you guys ranked U.T.I. higher than Skid Row because you probably were over exposed to Skid Row vs U.T.I. 10. I think it didn’t make sense to put Skid Row self-titled vs UTI, which came out in 92. It should have been Slave To The Grind vs UTI. And Slave would win by a mile.
Was listening to McQueen Street this evening on recommendation by the Guru. Excellent!
The last Winger record SEVEN is highly recommended
Yeah I got that album earlier last year and agree it's a great album. Pickup Wildside and Kik Tracee if you dont have them.
Pull I believe was a mixture of the first two album in some ways. the lyrics were a bit more mature and less cheesy. it a bit more balanced.
Winger was talented. Probably just where he was a heart throb for the ladies makes people soft on admitting it. Just remember if he wasn't Alice Cooper wouldn't have kept him around until he thought he should start his own band. Like the Box set.
I wish you would do a video shirtless, I wanna see that beautiful body
Well there's a comment I don't get every day. But I did laugh my ass off at it, so thank you.
Check out the band Platinum Overdose killer stuff
Will do, Brother.
Lets go!!!
Let's go!!
Razor is also a wifebeater, look up Erica Drake.
I enjoyed this. I'm still not sure what band has the better debut yet. I would love to hear you do one with the band Slikk Toxic. They had a tremendous debut and also Vain with No Respect is a killer debut. Maybe Black n Blue or Kickaxe. So many bands should have been bigger.
Whenever a band does something different, people cry sell out. But in reality, it's actually impossible. I'ts a huge risk for any band to change their style because no matter whats popular at the time theres no guarantee that anyones going to buy your album. It's impossible to just simply play a certain style of music and automatically make money. Record industry over saturation killed hair metal. Think about the sheer quantity of albums that were released in 89 and 90. 5 to 10 albums being released every month. Who was going yo buy them all? There were dozens of bands that all sounded the same. The scene had become more about the image than the music and the industry moved on. A couple years later the record companies did the exact same thing to Grunge. And then to Pop Punk and Nu-Metal after that. Genres dont kill other genres. That's also impossible. The music industry creates them, bleeds them dry, and then moves on to the next one. Grunge isn't even really a genre, it's just a music industry marketing term.
Gary Holt from Exodus is the one who said the thrash guys all secretly liked Ratt and admired Warren Demartinis playing
What are your thoughts on What’s it Gonna Be? Such a great underrated song. Triumphant even!
