Even though this was published five years ago, I just wanted to say thank you very much for explaining where all of the bolts went because I am currently reinstalling my subframe🤘🏽
This looks almost exactly the same as the Mk5 rack replacement. THANK YOU. Indispensable. I've got to replace the rack on my 07, and you are by far the most detailed and reassuring. Thanks and cheers.
Thanks mate, recently got my steering rack replaced, and was trying to explain the sounds I heard which made me went like, urm I think something may be off with the steering wheel.
Nice video....I’ve been wondering my Rack needs to be replace I’ve had a red steering light but have perfect power steering....Just ordered a new harness to see if that fixes the issue
ghostlyrich unfortunately the system is saying it can’t communicate....like there is a loose connection I have a vagcom but it tells me I have no communication with the steering and the computer so it won’t even let me do adaptation. I think the harness has a cut line it somewhere because for a while when I would hit a bump it turn yellow and I could clear the code and now it stays red
My had some play( after a while) the light came on after a couple of days the steering wheel started to give me some kicks when I steer. Some ideas please
Don't reuse subframe bolts, the 'special' ones you show will already be stretched! Next you'll wonder why the camber angle keeps changing, due to the subframe sliding around. The original knock on the rack can be fixed to some degree with the preload adjustment, best to check that before condemning a rack to the scrap heap.
I’ve had a new steering rack which has got rid of the knocking noise, however there still feels to be some slop in the centre position. Had all the tie rods checked and everything ok there. Any other ideas?

Hi! Did the car have to be programmed to recognize the new steeringrack?
Great video. Can a left hand drive o5 golf steering rack be used in a right hand drive 05 golf
Nice.
Do you believe that is posible to remove the rack and not remove also the subframe?
I ended up with same sound

Slip a piece of hose around the pinion linkage and you shouldn't be able to booger the splines up.
What head unit do you have in your car?
It's a very old pioneer if you like the look, look up the pioneer nex series head units
Thanks for posting
I'm in the process of installing a MK6 rack into my MK5

Where is the preload adjustment screw located
More vw content plz. Muy bueno.
I have an MK6 2012 and mine broke from an accident, does anybody know if a steering rack from an MK5 will work on my MK6?
Is this similar for an MK4?

The joint from the steering wheel to the rack might have play. That or you have to adjust preload a bit.
@@TheWolf133 is there a special tool to adjust the preload?
I got the locking tabs back but I cannot for the life of me pull the harness off
Nice DIY however, its WHEEL not a rim!!!!
"penetration fluid" 😅
'Torque spec = one hand...maybe a second hand...' lol
My mk5 with 168k miles the steering rack went bad twice already..
