  • In this video, we show you how to inspect a MK5 GTI. This can be useful if you want to check over a car you currently own, or look over a vehicle you may purchase.
    While this video was shot on a MK5 GTI it would be almost identical on a MK6 GTI, as well as other models on the same platform.

    Coming from a mechanic, engine and transmission mounts are worth looking into as well. A lot of times people ignore bad mounts and it ends up destroying other parts like a chain reaction. Good video tho!

    It was great to see how you would inspect properly. That was a good job and I bet it doesn't take long when the process is second nature. I'd put an extra step at the checks on DSG. I found that forcing it to retrain solved the unexpected mechanical disengagement. I experienced it when starting my car which was fine when I parked about 30 mins before. I tried to reverse and found there was no transmission power at all. I think that's the unexpected mechanical gear disengagement. I could not deduce what caused the problem. It's some glitch in the gearbox computer which when you turn it off and turn it on again the fault is gone. So do the manual reset routine as described by many sites, involving ignition on depressing the accelerator to the floor including the button for 30 seconds, followed by ignition off and accelerator to the floor for 30 seconds. I then cleared the code. When I restarted the engine, the transmission was back, and it was reset, so it was then learning again what it had learned before. There's another process called adaptation, which has the clutches readjust their positions and pressure. Again, the transmission thereafter ajusts to the ideal setting, assuming you have sufficient clutch naterial to adjust. One thing I notice is you didn't check much down on the side of the engine where the coolant flange is. I notice that some are saying this is turning out to be a common source of coolant loss (and of course you had the white mineral deposit). Anyone know how to really get that damn stuff off?

    I didn’t see a code for that dsg fault, but as someone who had a similar issue, given the miles and the scenario where it directly effects reverse, it is likely the clutchpack. The leaking fluid was probably from the previous owner getting the dsg fluid serviced. Or the dude was aimlessly monkeying around

    Owned an ‘07 GTI from new for 7 years. Things I learned are: they consume oil, change the cam follower, your fuel pump will go at some point, update the PCV valve and DV valve, coil packs and plugs will not last 60k miles lol. Other than that it was boat loads of fun. Still had the original brakes at 45k miles when I sold it.

    is that different engine?

    • @s9523pink
      @s9523pink 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sergio, this is a TSI engine, not an FSI, which has a larger more cumbersome engine cover with the induction system in the cover. On my MKV, I took that FSI cover off and replaced my induction system with a cold air intake, housed, similar to this TSI version, in a separate air box made out of carbon fiber ...from ECS Tuning. I suggest you do something like this as the original sits on top of the hot engine, robbing some power, that’s probably why later models went to the above induction.

    • @votedgames8795
      @votedgames8795 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@s9523pink dear man if you looked back in the vw papers and why this is above the ''hot'' engine then you sould notice that the air filter in the cover takes less space than the intake on the side. The more space they saved the more components they could put in this area like confort parts for instance airco and climate controll(standard in germany)
      and for the seccond point a cold air intake is nice for more power but i would reccomend a replacement filter becouse the cold air intake only has use with more than 300+ pk or 295,8 hp and most of the people don't run this power.
      most of the times the filter would not be cleaned propperly, 70% of the people like the idea of this filter becouse it looks cool and think that is use at this low power.
      so that 70% places it and never even look at it once it is installed.

    The problem with inspections is why would the seller go through the trouble of letting you inspect it when he has a list of several other potential buyers?
    This has been the case with almost every car I've bought. They just say "next" and try to get the easiest sell possible.
    Even if the car is flawless, asking people if you can get it inspect is almost 90% guaranteed to end up with the car being pulled out from under you.

      Depends what country you’re in. Some countries had FSI engines for all mk5 production years

    • @votedgames8795
      @votedgames8795 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      in most parts of europe 2008 the mk5 stops producing and upgraded to mk6 in america and some other country's the mk6 came a year later,
      the mk5 motors stops delivering at that point but the mk5 body's still role of the line thats why a mk6 engine is fitted in a mk5 body so they could make the mk5 a year longer before the mk6 came out in that country.
      the year of release for the car in that particularly country is the year the inport right's are accepted and the factory molds where send to de country to produce.

    Sad that this video didnt came out few months sooner...i have literally bought THE WORST Gti in the Europe...whole car was broken...complete new front axle...new clutch ..."renew" transmission AC "blew" up whole heater circuit...completely new brakes(all 4) and repaired handbrake...and thats not even the worst :D ...
    Engine crashed...time chain just ripped...so new head...and from that completely re-worked new engine....top of all that mechanic "found" broken dual mass flywheel...so new as well...
    Happy ending? NOOO :D yesterday when he putting engine back to the car he found that turbo is cracked(bad) so it was choice running with 50% or even less turbo and praying that hold couple of weeks...or completely new...sooo another new part.
    And iam not even talking about missing screew...broken PCV pipe(PCV as well was bad and need to replace :D ) and broken thermostat.
    I must say i dont even know anyone who has more problems with GTI...
    I bought that car with 214 XXX km (132973 miles) for 100 000 CZK (4 786.5 USD) and so far repairs cost me 11 008.95 USD!! :D
    Great deal...but i still the car :D

    Few days ago some moron tried to sell me MK5 GTI, 2005, the only thing that was GTI on it was front grill LOL, it actually had TDI engine with 90hp???? And he would swear on his mother that it is actual GTI. How the hell is that possible, shouldn't that be GTD? He couldn't even unlock it at first xD, windows often refused to open/close properly, it had regular seats, ugly wheels and even uglier low-profile tires, some cheap garbage rear bumper and pretty much everything else was stock on it, oh yeah, it was 6 speed manual. But yeah, never seen *GTI* with 90hp TDI in it.
