This is classic Superman. Pure in every possible way. When he asks Richard, "Have you got them?" he's showing trust in Richard's capabilities. He never tries to emasculate Richard or make him feel less like a man. He allows him the dignity to still feel like their true protector.

My favorite thing about this scene is how sudden Superman's appearance is. Through it all the audience is with Richard as he struggles to figure out how to get everyone out of the sinking ship. The panic, fear, and despair when he realizes that there's no way out. Everything is dark, the water keeps rising, and the surface is getting further and further away. He's about to give up......then two boots hit the window all of a sudden....
It really makes you see why some people consider Superman to be some kind of god or angel.

Kevin Rios I mean, for this one. I didn't want one. All the new/future Superman movies will involve some form of violent Clark Kent to appease to an audience who doesn't care for Clark's character, (they only care about his powers). They'll have a Superman made for sales. Personally, I think this movie is so pure. So for that, Brandon Routh stands as my favorite portrayal so far. This was a good movie and a great Superman.

3:20 to 4:00 is a fantastic example of Superman’s complete mastery of his powers. First he uses enough force with both hands to fly the ship out of the sea, then he floats holding on to the ship with his left hand while wrenching off a metal door like it’s tin foil with his right hand. He then ensures he uses enough force to hold on to Richard, Lois and Jason but not crush Richard’s arm to mush while still floating in the exact same position after letting go of a 3000 ton ship.

@@akshayg3363 To be brutally honest, he doesn't make a bad Superman, but he lacks any charisma, he's just a bit bland. Plus he looks too young, especially considering that the plot has him returning after years of absence (on top of the years that he presumably had had established himself as Superman in the movie's universe before leaving).
The Lois casting and her husband's doesn't help either. She doesn't feel like Lois and isn't a strong actress, not to mention she's also too young. Think of Erica Durance's Lois in comparison, how much better she was in the role.
Only Kevin Spacey was perfectly cast, but the whole plot with his real estate plan is both unimaginative and boring. Which is a main reason why the movie didn't work.
Plus, Routh's Superman feels a bit of a downer, low on energy and vitality. Though after the depressive Man of Steel came out, his Superman is full of joy in comparison, but that's a different story.
Also, the cinematography is just dour, which adds to the whole joyless tone and feeling the movie projects.
At least in my view those are some of the reasons the movie was a disappointment and didn't really work.

I don't think people REALLY understand that ‘Superman Returns’ (2006) was a direct sequel to ‘Superman 2.’ That's why Luthor knows where the Fortress of Solitude is and how Superman knocked up Lois.
Most people I hear say that they just didn’t really like how Brandon Routh portrayed Superman, but Brandon Routh captured the spirit of Chris Reeves perfectly. He looks just like him at that age (Reeves was also in his late 20s during the filming of the first 2 movies) and totally sold me on this being the same boy scout/awkward dork character from those films.
I agree Kate Bosworth was miscast being too young to play Lois (she was 23, while Margot Kidder was older than Reeves during the earlier movies), but as far as acting goes she, much like Routh, captured old Lois very well.
Luthor seducing a rich old lady to get him out of jail and inherit her money sounds like something he'd do in the past movies. It's absurd comedy! A staple of the old films.
And most people complain that the ending was quick and convenient when that was the case with the earlier films as well (time reversal, anyone?).
Overall, I love this movie and it gets more shit than it deserves.

The problem with is being a sequel is the continuity issues. Reeve's Superman gave Lois the "forget" kiss, so this Lois wouldn't have had a clue how she got pregnant let alone it being Superman's son.
Also this movies has them flying together for the first time when we know they flew together in the old movies.
But I love Brandon Routh's Superman and wish he had been given a trilogy.

I love the fact no one complains about the entire ship being lifted up by 1 beam and the beam actually doesn't deform or crack from the weight of a full ship hanging on it :D which is way more weight than the beam would be able to support or the welds / screws / nuts would keep in place.

Brandon Routh was a pitch-perfect Superman. I wish we could've had more from this iteration. He was flawless; a great Kal El and a believable Clark Kent.

So glad Im not alone, I often replay this scene, it is the best "Superman" moment from any of the movies, I think this was a great film and he was a great superman, I don't understand when people say it was a flop, certainly not because of the actor, acting writing and high production values of this film. The only thing I didn't like was the incredibly OTT violent beating he takes not long before this amazing scene but otherwise he and this was one of the best

It was a (box office) flop because it earned 390 million worldwide on a 270 million dollar budget, keeping in mind that half of that box office take (more or less) goes to the theatres, so only about half (~180 million) goes to the studio who spent the budget, ballparking the film leaving the cinema somewhere at about 90 million dollars in the red. The film has it's faults but I do greatly enjoy it. Shame it flopped.

Dave Cashen ya $270 mil was a bit too high for an actor like Brandon, he was very good, but still no one really knew about him... Plus the story, again, was pretty good but not great.

I remember watching this in theaters when I was 10 years old. What really gave me goosebumps when I saw it as a kid was when the crystal rose underwater and was about to strike the boat as well as when it actually struck and when Lois got knocked unconscious with the door slamming into her.

Superman, for me, is the greatest superhero of them all.
He is as close to perfect as you can get.
In a way, we can all inspire to be like him.
Obviously none of us would ever be capable of his amazing feats of strength or superpowers.
Nonetheless, we can all perform acts of kindness, compassion etc.

The most underrated Superman, I think.
I have nothing against Henry Cavill, but Routh looks better against him.
Yes, he didn't have enough experience here. Plus, the pressure was on: it's hard to play Christopher Reeve's Superman and not give in. By the way, in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, he played much better.
As for the script - the film was underestimated. Even Tarantino, who admired the film, pointed this out. It turned out to be a very subtle, personal work.
The director himself - Singer - is an orphan. And he made a film about an orphan who is deprived of his home. The earth is a shelter for him. And only in the end, he makes a great sacrifice. And Superman finds a son. And with it he finds his home, where he is no longer a stranger.
But this is more the plot of a melodrama, not a blockbuster.
    Hence the problems.
It's hard to make a superhero movie and do a direct sequel to a 26-year-old movie. At the same time, the actor needs to play the same character. Naturally, the new generation, unfamiliar with the old films, could not understand this film.

Ohh good grief... You started out complimentary then you end up putting the whole film down.
People uncomfortable with a film that had heart, real heart... they feel the need to put down.

In my head cannon I love to rewatch this and when Richard starts shouting “Lois, Lois!” When she falls after hitting her head - that Supes is hundreds of miles away saving the people in Metropolis and hears her name above all the chaos happening in Metropolis and the panic in Richards voice from miles away and stops exactly what he’s doing and just flys in that direction to save them. That’s why there’s a little delay on him arriving.
