I’d start by avoiding high oxalates foods, whether it’s in home made or commercial pet foods. No one is talking about oxalates… there’s no reason why animals should be fed spinach, sweet potato, brown rice, nuts or turmeric! Which are consumed with very high levels of oxalates to begin with. For CKD… do not feed turmeric or black pepper which will make it worse. Read “toxic super foods”. Let’s be more educated!
Thanks for bringing this up! I wouldn't start there, no. The risk factors for pets are well studied and those are the ones I'd start with, being phosphorous. Definitely not advocating for high carb diets in general but this is do or die (literally) once your pet is already sick. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects have been studied to be beneficial for the inflammation that dog kidneys' experience during CKD. That book is also aimed for humans so unless it references animal models, not everything can be directly applied to dogs and cats.
