I do have a question, if I may?. I have a 5 month kitten who just got spayed 2 weeks ago. She has been fine full of energy playing talks alot, etc. Her body shape normal but when I woke up this morning both sides of her body look caved in skinny in-between her rib cage and rear. She's been quiet all morning, hiding under the bed most of the day, her meow is so soft almost no meow. She's been eating and went for a poop. I worry I tell my aunt and uncle they say I'm just worrying for nothing She's fine. I don't know what to do? Is this normal? 🤔 I have no vet clinic near me not taking new patients and have to drive over an hour and no car at the moment. Is there anything I can give her? 😭😔 feel so sad for her. Love my baby girl.

Hi there, my friend’s kitty has ckd, I think in kidney failure, and she’s on subcutaneous fluids. She stopped eating two days ago and is constipated. Do you have any homeopathic ideas, other than her current vet treatment to entice her to eat and help her relieve herself?

My boy Gandalf is 21 years old and I took him to the vet and vet did a blood work on him and we found out he has kidney disease. The vet gave us a prescription for him Rena care, and he is doing somewhat better. He's our special kitty. Been with us through thick and thin. Hope he will be around another 5 or 10 years. Just can't let go of our buddy. Pray for him. Bless you all.

Vet told us when our cat was 8-years of age, that he was dying of kidney disease. We put him on age-appropriate Science Diet food (kibble and canned food), Omega 3 and 6 supplements, Pet Wellbeing Kidney Disease Support Gold Cat Supplement, and lots of water. Here, 12 years later, he is still kicking.

@@justdrive5327 We give him about a half a dropper full every day. When he gets dehydrated, we give him plain Pedialite mixed with 2% low-fat milk. When his stomach is upset and he throws up frequently, we grind a very small amount of Pepcid into his milk/Pedialite mix. Additionally, here in the last few years, we let him eat a bit of regular old wet food along with his kd food. He enjoys that and that helps in hydration as well. He only eats in small amounts, several times a day. I might have given you the impression that our cat is doing very well. He is not. He has his good days and his bad days. He is like a walking skeleton, his coat is dull and rough, but he still seems to enjoy being around us. We know his days are numbered and we just try to keep him happy and comfortable. Twenty years is a good, long life for a cat. Our last two cats (sisters) died at 17 and 18 years of age (both with kidney disease). It's never pleasant to see our animals sick and in the end stages of their lives. Just keep loving your guy to the very end and keep him comfortable. And know that as his protector, the one thing you cannot protect him from is time. Hang in there!

    Dear Dr. Jones,
I just wanted to personally thank you for your videos. I have a sweet cat 19 yr old cat named Sammy who has suffered from CKD since Dec 2019. The vet who diagnosed him gave us special kidney diet food and pills for high blood pressure (without even checking it) and said he had 6 months to live. This dear cat is my heart and soul, I've had him since I was 9 years old and naturally, I refused to accept what the vet said. I found your videos in Dec 2019 and you have no idea how much they helped. You gave me SO much hope. I found a different vet, one who was so kind and generous with his time and very understanding of my love for Sammy. Up until recently, we've done sub q fluids every other day for him and his special treat after was his favorite canned food mixed with your supplement. He loved it!
Unfortunately, I've made the difficult decision to have him put down today, but we had 19 months together and we savored every moment and he was a champ through it all. Your euthanasia videos have also just given me comfort at this time. I am terrified to say goodbye to my best friend, but he's very weak and struggling to walk on hard surfaces, when he pees he ends up lying down, he has no interest in me or any other furry friend, and is refusing to go anywhere besides underneath my bed or outside. I see I'm holding on because I don't want to say goodbye plus he's still eating (the dry food I declined him for all those months lol) and drinking water, but it's time.
Thank you so much for having compassion for animals and giving great educated advice. I credit your supplement for extending and maintaining his quality of life. Sammy also used Slippery Elm, per your advice, to help with nausea and it worked very well! You are a wonderful person. Thank you so much, Dr. Jones. Be well.
    All the best,
    Sam and Em x

@@evydarling - what I have learned having cats as pets and mine have lived a long time , is that at home palliative care for senior cats is all one can really do outside of injury that requires antibiotics or surgery and those I even question along with vaccinations. My 15 year old kitty pal died last Saturday. I’m really going to miss him. I have spent over $1,000 at the vet and he died anyway. It was after vaccines that he took a turn for the worst. He was diagnosed early kidney disease in December 2021 and he died May 28, 2022 at 2:30 am. At least he did not die alone. I was with him. Our vet always told us that he had early signs of kidney disease so we had him on KD food for quite some time.
My question is considering his diabetes and his signs of kidney disease, how much and how often should we be feeding Baxter this Wellness brand food?
Something to note: We feed him his KD food right now with your supplement twice a day about 2 to 2.5oz of food at 7am and 7pm and he always seems to be hungry in the middle of the day.

Murray looks like he enjoyed helping make this video. 😁 I recently watched several of your videos about home remedied for cats, cat flu, and eye infections. I am in awe at how well Murray does when you administer his eye drops!!!! I have a kitten I found on October 1, abandoned inside the wall of a storage unit. We literally tore part of the wall down to get him out. He weighed just 7 ounces when we brought him inside - sadly, people in this area abandon animals frequently. I estimate he was 2½ - 3 weeks old. (Still had blue eyes, ears open but partially folded over, wobbly when walking, still had milk teeth.) I started out bottle feeding him kitten formula and have slowly transitioned to wet food. He's now eating from a dish and using the litter box on his own which was a milestone am really grateful he has met. He caught an upper respiratory infection from one of my cats and his eye is runny and the pink part is swollen. So I brewed up some green tea and honey. I have to say that it works really well once I finally get it into his eye!! I am so grateful for your videos, now I just have to master the eye drop skills.

I’m so glad they’ve discovered so much more about this problem. Back over twenty years ago, I was told kidney problems were due to tar in some of the canned cat food causing crystals. Maybe, that was incorrect. But, also that the cat ph was off as they are carnivore. Not grain eaters. Had a cat with a lot of problems. I could not afford the vet treatments and it seemed rough for the cats. At first sign of crystals I’d learned to put a little apple cider vinegar ( with the mother) in their water. Seemed to dissolve the crystals, and stop the problem. Worked like a charm. But, I am still wondering if there aren’t several causes. What about high oxalates foods ( as occurs with humans ). Such as spinach and sweet potatoes in their foods. Sounds like healthy food. But, can create kidney stones and bladder stones.

I lost my baby girl cat 3 days ago. She was doing great in the morning until around 10:30 am. She was relaxing in the cat bed at about 10 am. It was a little cold so I covered her back with a blue towel. A few minutes later, she left the cat bed and walked to the glass back door and sit down as she normally did. At around 10:30 am , she walked back to the bed and paved on it but meanwhile she started meowing abnormally that I had never heard before. She had never meowed like that before. I heard other cats meowing like that when they were not feeling well, I guessed she was about to vomit, so I held her gently with my arms and dropped her on the floor. She didn't vomit but was meowing louder and louder and more and more frequently. I held her again and dropped her in the soft and comfortable bed where she slept every day at night beside me. She was keeping meowing and her stomach started rising and sucking faster and faster. I called the vet immediately for emergency. On my way to the animal veterinary hospital while my friend was driving the car, I was holding her in my arms. I saw her nose and eye sockets turn pale from pink red. She was crying painfully. 12 minutes later we got to the hospital. In the emergency room the vet and his assistants checked her blood and gave her an ultrasonic examination. They said they found fluid around her right kidney and her right side kidney burst , meanwhile my baby cat stopped breathing. They said they were doing CPR on her and gave her a shot to allay the pain. Then they gave her another shot to make her heart to beat . That was what they told me on the phone while I was waiting outside the hospital. Two nurses came to tell me my cat was dying and asked me to sign a paper to put her down. I said NO and asked them why they didn't want to use the infusion- aspiration syringes to drain the fluid around her right side kidney. Apparently that fluid was from her right side kidney and it is very toxic and waste and would get her organs shut down. They said they didn't know what it was if they drain it my cat would die. I still tried so hard and begged them to drain the fluid . I told them that if they did nothing ,my cat would die, if they drain or extract the toxic fluid from her body she still would die, why not give a try to drain it? They said nothing but again asked me to sign the paper to put her down or I would not be allowed to take a look at my cat or have my cat returned to me. I wanted to go inside the emergency room where my cat was, the nurses grabbed my arms and prevented me. Finally , I had to say I wouldn't sign the paper and wouldn't give up on my cat, I would take my cat to other hospital, finally they said ok, and told me they would give my cat another shot to stop her pain. I told them to be honest not to put her down. They said they wouldn't and said that shot was for stopping her pain. Finally they went to the emergency room, carried my baby cat out . We argued nearly 20 minutes before they finally returned and allowed me to see my cat. While typing this right now, I can't stop crying so hard! This 20 minutes was the very last 20 minutes of her life when she was alive and it was also very last 20 minutes that i could have been with my baby girl when she was still alive! After they returned my poor baby girl, her head and all her legs , paws and her butt completely soaked out. she was so weak, she tried to keep her eyes open and when I was calling her " Linlin, Mommy is here baby, don't leave mom, don't give up." She was breathing so hard and tried to meow, after trying meow 3 times, she took her very last breath and died in my arms. I lost my baby girl!
There is no words that can describe my sharp heart-wretch pain! She was only 10 and half years old I could have given her a lot more love and happiness in the future if she was still alive !
When the vet finally shew up , he didn't show up until my cat was dying. I tried so hard to hold back tears and suppress my grief , asked him if my cat had acute renal failure or ruptured kidney, he said he didn't know. The nurses beside him told me my cat's bladder was normal. I asked him why there was only fluid around her right side kidney if the fluid was not from her right side kidney? He said he didn't know. I asked him so why initially he asked the nurse to tell me my cat's right side kidney burst if it the fluid was not from that kidney ? He said no idea what disease my cat died from, maybe cancer, maybe blood clot or brain bleeding . I said no matter where the fluid was from, apparently it was not supposed to be there and it was very toxic waste and fatally dangerous and that was how it got all her organs shut down, why they hadn't drained or extracted toxic fluid out of her stomach with infusion-aspiration syringes before it flew all over her body inside and before her organs shut down? He didn't answer and simply said he gotta go. My heart is SO PAINFUL!
Dr, Jones, what disease did my cat probably die from? Did my cat had acute renal failure or was her right side kidney ruptured? Should the fluid around her right side kidney be drained? Thank you !!

I'm so sorry about your kitty. Mine is quite ill and just a few weeks ago she was doing pretty well. It sounds like yours had an unusual problem, but I hope you find out the answers you need. Just remember that you did everything you could and you loved her enough to try everything. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Dr. Jones. My cat has had kidney disease for the past few years and had progressed to Stage 2 about a year ago. I discovered this video and started him on daily Omega-3's and Slippery Elm root a few times a week as I felt was needed. About a year later, he is now at the high end number wise of normal kidney function! I think it is the Omega-3's. Thank you so much!

Blood work has confirmed the disease but the only thing the vet has done is to suggest switching to kd wet cat food. My cats have been on canned cat food since they were kittens, but won't eat the prescription diet, so I can't wait to try the Wellness brand and have also ordered all the other supplements recommended by Dr. Jones. I know this was 2 years ago, but I hope my comment still gets seen. I lost one of my cats over a year ago from CKD. His brother is still with us, but also has CKD. His vet has him on Hills k/d, he doesn’t eat it. I mix in another cat food hoping to entice him. He will not eat canned food, no soft treats, he’s extremely picky. Doesn’t even like water/broth in his kibble. He throws up multiple times a day, sometimes food, sometimes just bile. He LOVES plants, will rip your arm off for a basil plant. But makes him throw up even more. We have another kitty that’s healthy, but they share food so she has to eat what he does. There’s not many kibble options for CKD.

My dog hasn't eaten for 4 days and ear infection wasn't getting better so back to the vet yesterday. They told me she is very dehydrated and best to put her on fluids for a few hours and get a blood sample. One hour later vet called me and said it isn't looking good ( my dog is a 8y old English foxhound) her blood is full of toxins and her kidneys had shut down. They suggested the best thing to do put her down !!??? I said NO WAY i will get a second opinion. They told me they can try and give her antibiotics and fluids for 48h , take another blood sample and see if things improve. I agreed. this morning the vet called me and said , thats she is doing much better and she even ate some chicken but want to keep her on fluids for another day. Yesterday they suggested putting her down and after a day of fluids she is doing better already !!! What are my future options ?? while i am typing this, Vet just called again. they want to keep her until Monday the least (more money i guess) and continue Fluids. Ok. On Monday vet called again , told me her toxins are now half but they want to keep her another 48h, i declined this time and took her home. Now 5 days after i took her home, she is not doing well. I'm not an expert but from my experience low protein is best, but it really all depends on your cat, but too low of a protein is also a problem, you gotta do a blood test to make sure what is The problem and from there you would know what to do, for example sometimes if bun levels are high you gotta get low protein , because less protein means Less need for the excretion of protein itself when filtered through the kidney, which is less work for kidneys and you can get your cat on a renal wet food diet that might really help, honestly your best option is to do the blood test, the right blood test would show you what you have to do

My friend’s cat reversed her CKD with raw food (Darwin’s and Viva Raw). So I started feeding Viva and their poops stopped smelling, pooped less, and their fur is SO DANG soft and fluffy/shiny (before it was kind of greasy with dandruff). Mind you I was feeding imo one of the best canned brands from Tiki Cats, which I still recommend if you MUST feed canned and can afford it. However, I now pay almost $100 less per month on raw, so u use the extra to buy freeze dried raw treats for them bc those are pricey but also way better than regular treats.

It seems to me it should be possible to put them on some of these supplements and food choices to prevent kidney disease. Any studies regarding this?

The very biggest mistake I made w/ my 4 kitties ( got them all around same time) is not getting them on soft food from the get go. For the reasons he’s outlining here along with you can hide a lot of supplements or possibly even medicine in it, unlike the dry food.

Have a recently diagnosed cat, so doing lots of research. Glad I found your video. My cat also has hyperthyroidism and is on 5 mg day of methimazole. Are there any contraindications to the above recommendations or other steps you would add for a kitty dealing with both issues?

Maybe in addition to dry kibble, you can try canned mackerel or salmon, add double amount of water to it and a light sprinkle of Himalaya salt. Better quality protein source plus the water cat needs.

Good video. Entertaining too! Not long found your channel Dr Jones, but been great help to two of our cats already. One had ear trouble scratching and mites. The other a mouth abscess. Both made good recovery. Now, I'm looking for a video to sort out why another of our cats is leaking or seeping from his bottom. I'm searching through your kittie play lists.

I just saw the video on hydrolyzed food, which I use but will be switching. But I looked up the Epakitin and it says hydrolyzed soy protein,
Soy protein-based nutrition powder which you say is not good. Im confused now, what is your suggestion? My cat needs me❤

Dr. Jones, could you please show a video on administering the azodyl capsules to a cat? Mine arrived yesterday but they are very big and my elderly guy (15) resists them for that reason. I read about a "shooter" device but worry in any case that I would cause choking. thank you, rob

I would love to see that also. My 9 year old dog was just diagnosed with kidney disease. His BUN was 194. He stayed in the hospital for 5 days getting iv fluids. His levels went down a lot but were still high. Brought him home and giving meds (Aluminum hydroxide, Benazapril, Prilosec) and 200ml of sub q fluids every day. Just got blood test back after a week and a half. His BUN is 282 now! I started him on Pet Well-being kidney a couple days before the test. They told me to give 300ml of fluids but he has about a week to live. He is still eating small meals throughout the day. Sleeps most of the time but still lifts his head to see what is going on, comes to go for a walk and follows me to the bathroom. Praying for a miracle.
