BMW are slowly but surely getting rid of what makes them an appealing brand. This new 1 series has nothing going for it over its competitors. It’s a hard pass from me.
ben079329 I mean, this is what the car buying public is looking for, people complained about the old 1 Series being cramped, and the old X1 being low to the ground and too small for an SUV, so going FWD was probably the only thing they could do to keep the public happy while keeping the cost down. Most people didn’t even know their BMWs were RWD or how many cylinders they had, they just cared about the brand. Sad times indeed, but I guess it was all predicted.
I don’t like the look of the new a class, the new 1 series looks atrocious and I’m sure Audi will ruin the a3 too. Basically hot hatches are being made boring and may as well buy a Ford Focus st now. Probably going to have to start getting small coupes and saloons such as the m2 or a 370z for fun now
Thing is, making true drivers cars hasn't been BMWs priority for a long time now. They have been chasing mass market sales to compete with VAG for at lest the last 10 years and of course their cars have regressed in that time as a result, but their sales figures are booming. If they are increasing their market share then they probably won't care about diluting their brand appeal or betraying their heritage. Sad but true. In todays world sales is everything and integrity is (evidently) nothing.
@RandomShart ice is not gonna go anywhere in the near future, electric have bad economy, if everyone would take an electric car, the energy grid will simply collapse, battery production, and overall production for an electric, and is entire life until the junk yard, is more polluting than ICE car. Electric, as of now, are not the answer to mobility
No performance cars under $200k are worthy of the badge anymore. On the street, where 99.9999% of people do their driving, performance cars are now a joke against a Tesla, which now has three models that will hit 60 in well under 4 seconds. The old M140i's B58 engine is an absolute monster, they easily make like 450 horses with stock internals and just sound ridiculous with a proper exhaust system!
I don't think even BMW would argue that the new car ha a better engine. Though it will obviously be a lot cheaper for them to make and also make the car more economical and reduce emissions, which mean more people can afford to fuel/tax/insure it, which likely means more sales. So to BMW it is justified even if it is a regressive step.

The whole charm of driving a BMW comes from the sound of a 6-pot power plant at the front driving the rear wheels, and if it’s mated to a manual box then it’s even better. I’ve never been a huge BMW fan myself but the above statement is why I’ve always had great respect for their cars. Now that BMW has taken that away from the new 1-Series it’s no different from a Ford Focus or VW Golf, they’ve taken away its BMW DNA and the very reason one might buy it over anything else. The only good things I can say about the new 1-Series is that it has a decent ass and an improved* interior (minus the instrument cluster), the new rear taillights are much nicer in my opinion, I always thought the ones on the previous gen looked a bit awkward. Other than that the new one is a flop, all I can say is that 70% of the costumers who bought the previous gen won’t be buying this new one, it just doesn’t speak to those same enthusiastic drivers in the unique way that it used to, it’ll be sold to those who just want a BMW badge but don’t really know about or care for how it’s setup or what’s underneath. My advice to anyone who’s looking at this new 1-Series, if you can’t find a previous generation anymore but still want a brand new car then rather look at something like the new Focus ST, Ford has been doing brilliant front-wheel-drive machines for ages, they’ve got a special sauce for it and they’re very good at it, plus it’s more affordable. BMW should stick to making rear-wheel-drive cars because that’s what they’re good at, I’m not saying BMW won’t make a good fwd car, but they simply shouldn’t even be thinking about it. Let’s just hope this new fwd mentality doesn’t infect any more BMW models...
They made it because they realised the old car wasn't selling enough. A 6 cylinders, rwd car is much more expensive to produce than a 4 c. fwd one, this means a much higher price for the customer who, unless if it's a true BMW fan, will simply buy a Focus (super nice car, one of my favourites) or an Audi or a VW or a Merc. The truth is true car enthusiasts are a minority, and automakers simply adapt the lineup depending on how the market is going. That's why now you don't have ex-pilots or car enthusiasts at the lead of car companies, like it was in the 60s, now you find buisnessmen that probably uses the train as a mean of transport. They don't even give a damn about the history or the tradition of a brand/model, now the goal is to SELL $ELL $€LL $€££ And you can tell that by seing all the new SUVs that are being produced, or that people now judge a car just by the 0-60 time, I've heard it a million times: "AnYtHiNG Sl0wEr tHan ThE NeW MoDel S' 1.9 iS Sl00W anD OuTdATeD", then the next year there will be a new model, that's absolutely better than the previous one in every way (aside from the looks), has a more gigantic iphonish screen and less cylinders with more hp. Consumism, ladies and gentlemen, consumism at its best!
@@EhM-xt7pl Yeah, and just to add to your comment: what's this trend with iphone-ish screens and removing buttons? Why is using your iphone when you drive heavily punished, up to losing your license, while using an iphone on your dash (which is further away, lower and therefore more dangerous) is not? Plus a touchscreen is nowhere near as easy to use while you drive as let's say BMW's infotainment with a joystick.
@@icy_swoosh I have no idea. Hopefully BMW won't get rid of the I-drive controller. It is THE BEST, safest and easiest way to control ANY infotainment in ANY car. Touch screen is dangerous while moving. Mercedes got rid of theirs, but at least still keep physical buttons for it.

Yes BMW, You made it!
Things that made the 1series stand out: rwd, longitudinally mounted engine, 6 cylinders So there is no reason to take this instead of a a35 amg, golf r, audi s3 or i30 n they all have a 2litre 4 cylinder and fwd or awd und
Yep. They completely killed the M135i. The new one is ugly and worse. Only people who buy these are boomers/genXers who just really want a brand new car for once in their life.
The M140i seemed to be in Comfort mode for the exhaust sound test. Mine sounds much louder than that and crackles and pops a lot even with the standard exhaust.
It definitely was in comfort mode. I've heard it alot of times as well, and in sport mode it pops alot more and sounds a tad deeper. Embarrasing that they didnt figure that out.
RWD and that glorious straight six are what made the 1 series so different and special from the rest. Now it's just a farting blob like the rest of them. Truly heartbreaking.
The only unique feature that really sets the M140 was the gorgeous 6 cylinder and rear wheel drive, this new thing is just another copycat of each and every other silly hatchback in the market today ..
Thomas Hudson hi Thomas, I think the new design course taken by BMW is not good, already with the new series 3 then now with this series 1 which completely put down the good reputation of the old ones...that just my opinion, naturally.
2 weeks ago I went to test drive an M135i, with the real intention of a purchase. Walked away with an M140i that was on the forecourt. It made me grin every second I was in it. The M135i didn't. Simple.
@@blackpanda7612 Maybe he thought it was viable to not mount a cheaper lower-quality gearbox, and to not have an ultra-garish kidney liver in the front. But clearly, it wasn't viable.
I never liked the old 1 series, but this new one makes the old one actually look beautiful. Its exhaust sounds like the old civic with cheap exhaust. The grille looks absolutely rubbish. Overall, the old one is better in every area. Disappointing from BMW. And putting the M badge on this abomination is a blasphemy.
Zander Boshoff exactly. The grille is horrible. I’m not liking the new grille design. I dont like it on the g20 m340i, and it looks even worse on the new m135i. If they wanna slap an M badge, they should put a black grille, and not with this crazy design. I get it’s functional, but it just looks terrible.
I don't think I've ever been more disappointed to see a new BMW. Already I can see the resale value of the M140i beginning to rise. Future classic, future classic.
Edoardo Milanesi it has a nice engine for sure but i prefer the first 1 series coupe. Those go up in value but i don’t see this because its way too common. There are plenty of that Type of a car. The 1 series Coupé and 1m are a modern classic today because they are unique. Natural aspirated bmws will become classics because this Kind of Engine is dying.
Surprisingly 61% of TH-cam thinks that the 4 cylinder sounds better than the 6 cylinder What world do we live in now. (Ps if it’s the pops and crackles that you all like, the M140i can also produce them, just need to program it to do so)
I have an M3 F80 Comp pack with M-Performance exhaust and the exhaust sounds really nice. Don't like the pops and cracks so much when downshifting but apart from that, great exhaust note. Also intake note is very nice. The engine note though is miles worse than in my earlier M3 E92, which probably is top3 sounding BMW of all times. I guess you can't have it all. My new car makes around 10.5 l/100km, so thats a big stepup and its faster. On the 135i BMW took the "Cayman route", which is not a good thing.
Why would people want this crap if it’s not RWD and straight six, to me the new S3 coming next year would be a much better all rounder, also the A35 AMG is sweet, the NEW M135 has nothing special in this segment, plus it’s fugly
ZF gearbox is widely regarded as one of the best and played a big part in my decision to buy an X3. Why on earth would BMW consider an inferior gearbox? Probably cost sadly. Excellent video.
GT402 even the 2019 140i is good it doesn’t quite sound as good as the old 135i coz it’s turbocharged but it does make it a hell of a lot quicker and the 140 still sounds better than all the competitors coz it’s the only one with 6 cylinders if if the turbos do make it sound worse
Everyone who can and want should get the older F29 M140i immediately or any other used 6 cylinder 1 series. I’m pretty sure they will hold there value because there is no going back that‘s for sure.
They will make the new 2 series 6 cylinder rear wheel drive, they have done that to the 1 series to appeal to the mass market. When they bring out the new 2 series the older 140s and 240s will still depreciated like Normal
I don’t mean that they will not depreciate, they will just hold their value better than this new Kia Matt is comparing the F20 M140i with. Look how the E87 130i (which was not a M model) holds its value.
The b58 engine in the M140i is incredible, I had a 440i with a 265kw version of the engine and the power was insane. Officially, the 0-60 time was supposedly 4.8ish seconds, but it felt closer to 4 seconds, genuinely violent acceleration when you use launch control. Anyone thinking about buying either of these two cars needs to try the M140i, if you don't like the stock exhaust noise then get the official M performance exhaust
Old interior is better. Higher quality, and everything is more logically laid out, more functional. And in the normal versions of the new 1 series, you have to pay extra for digital gauges- and as rubbish as they are, you should, because the analogue gauges in the new car look like they're from a Kia from 2002.
I'm sure if both engines were pushed to their tuning limits, they would both produce similar horsepower. I just think BMW has a VERY conservative factory tune on it. That being said I would prefer it if BMW kept the 6 cylinder inline 6
121bham I work in the automotive sector, I was speaking to a person who bought a new a35 and he was having trouble running it in due to the mileage requirement for the running in period. This shows how highly tuned these engines are
The new car just sounded like a jcw mini to me. Cant beat the b58 plenty of torque and add exhaust and it's a symphony. Better than most actual m cars in the noise department.
BowelMovementW should have never made ANY car under $60k. Now these shitbags are fighting with Mercedes and other brands to make models so cheap, Timmy with his head gear and braces, who just finished driving classes in high school, can go buy a BowelMovementW or Mercedes. @@infernodk3127 The modern ones ARE money pits but the older ones like the E34, E36 and even to some extent the E39 and E46 are actually quite reliable and crucially, not stupidly complex and expensive to maintain. soundseeker63 what? The E39 5 and E46 3 have a HOST of issues. Their saving grace is they’re decently easy to work on yourself. The real money pits are literally any 7 series, and any E chassis vehicles after the E39. The F chassis vehicles actually prove to be quite reliable
Reasons why the M140i is better: - RWD and xDrive with RWD bias - 3 liter 6 Cylinder - More power = faster - Better transmission - 50/50 weight distribution - better looking M140i all day, every day
I am one of them. I also surprised to see that I am not alone in this. Of course, 6 cyl engine sounds better but when you objectively listen to the exhaust sounds, you realize that M140i's stock exhaust is rather silent and dull.

ICE is dying anyway and BMW realizes it.
I don't think even BMW would argue that the new car ha a better engine.

They don't even give a damn about the history or the tradition of a brand/model, now the goal is to
SELL
$ELL
$€LL
$€££
And you can tell that by seing all the new SUVs that are being produced, or that people now judge a car just by the 0-60 time, I've heard it a million times: "AnYtHiNG Sl0wEr tHan ThE NeW MoDel S' 1.9 iS Sl00W anD OuTdATeD", then the next year there will be a new model, that's absolutely better than the previous one in every way (aside from the looks), has a more gigantic iphonish screen and less cylinders with more hp.
Consumism, ladies and gentlemen, consumism at its best!
Eventhough it is a “useful” feature, M divisions are getting X-drive, M5 got hit already and if I’m not mistaken, next gen M3 is getting hit too!

@@soundseeker63 yes , true indeed , the old BMWs had quality German engineering and parts , now its all business and cutting costs and profits .
soundseeker63 what? The E39 5 and E46 3 have a HOST of issues. Their saving grace is they’re decently easy to work on yourself.
The real money pits are literally any 7 series, and any E chassis vehicles after the E39. The F chassis vehicles actually prove to be quite reliable
Reasons why the M140i is better:
- RWD and xDrive with RWD bias
- 3 liter 6 Cylinder
- More power = faster
- Better transmission
- 50/50 weight distribution
- better looking
M140i all day, every day

Well, that settles it, I'm never giving up my M140i. 😂
Who tf voted for the m135 in the sound comparison???
I am one of them. I also surprised to see that I am not alone in this. Of course, 6 cyl engine sounds better but when you objectively listen to the exhaust sounds, you realize that M140i's stock exhaust is rather silent and dull.
@@ahmetouztrk no shit. That stock exhaust can have its resonators deleted for less than 100 bucks
Ahmet Öztürk the car was in comfort mode..
Ahmet Öztürk because it wasn’t in sport with open valves -_-
@@spookyreaper1702 No it's because it's one of the new ones with a petrol particulate filter which basically muffles the sound even more. No pops and crackles, compared to a slightly older m140i like mine.
All, I bought one traded on my M140i. Completely different car but my god does this thing drive. Everyone judging it but just get a test drive. You will be blown away
Just had my m140i stolen 😒 really can't make my mind up whether to go for the new m135i or another m140i. Don't think the missus will let me have both.
Title is clickbait i see a ford vs bmw
Might as well get a Focus RS, more exciting.
Yes 😂
New BMW 135i Active Tourer vs old M140i review with 0-60mph, rolling race & brake test!*
Should have just said "Dont look at this new BMW" then end the video.
That would be the shortest TH-cam Video ever
Does BMW see that people dont like this new thing of theirs ... it's not a m135i
You don’t buy the BMW with the biggest engine for it to be a daily driver that’s comfortable and quite. You buy it to have fun daily driver
These new BMW grilles just look so stupid.
At least the exhaust sounds like a Mini Cooper S used to sound.
In my time, BMW’s had an 5.0l 10 cilinder engine ... you can’t call a 4 cilinder engine an “M” car.
Comments & CO it’s not an “M” car anyway
The original M3 had 4 cylinders. My biggest complaint is that its based on a FWD chassis.
In your time, nobody cared about gloabl warming
As you know time changes... still this engine way better in performance than old ones
Dont agree..
..Its about how much power they can get from each cc.. whether 5000 or 100.
As many users commented, this new BMW is not a BMW anymore.
Its a Mini
It's a Mini,with A BMW Badge
