Great review. We have had one for a couple of years and have enjoyed living with it even compared to Yaris GR and 981 Cayman Gt4 which have been in the garage over the same time period. New changes sound good, also looking forward to the 2023 facelift which had some media coverage this week.
Currently driving a 2020 M135i, had it from new and it’s just over two years old. I love it, great car and have enjoyed it since day one! However I have recently been wanting something a bit more, more power and more fun I guess. So when I took it for a service in March I ordered the new M240i in Portimao Blue w/ cognac leather and mostly all boxes ticked including sunroof. Haven’t had a test drive yet but watched a lot of videos on it, what should I be expecting Joe? What’s the car like in comparison to the M135i? Thanks!
Finally........ Been waiting for this since you mentioned it on FB or Instagram! So if I'm scheduled a build date sometime in September will it be this updated version or the previous one? 👍
This is the best 4WD hot hatch out there, period. Merc A45 is too rough on the road (and overpriced) for daily driving and the RS3 has a shit interior (way over priced as well) and the Golf R is decent but the build quality also suffers. You don't lack anything with circa 310bhp and the 450nm is so usable and you don't feel a huge torque gap over the 500nm on the Audi or Merc due to BMW's power delivery. Explains why it's such a popular car! Hoping for next year to be able to spec the carbon buckets when it comes with 4 exhausts 😂
The front quarter camera shot resembles a smiling face with the obvious nostrils, headlights being eyes the lower grill as a smile with the two air vents being dimples. Man is that looking good‼️
I only saw 1 on the road since it came out. I do 30.000km a year and i live in Belgium. I mean bmw one of the most sold brands here. That does say alot
I really wish we can get the sound update on the M135i’s made the previous years. The M135i I test-drove had pops and bangs, but not the one that was delivered to me... and the sound is a huge selling point for these cars so it does make a difference.
Interesting that the pops and bangs seem to be on very early 2019 cars and were maybe gone by late 2020 examples. Presumably that ties in with the EU noise legislation enforcement dates? Anyone with “insider” factory knowledge to confirm this?
@@JL-sl7mq Nope :( I did contact BMW in my country and they told me that they weren't planning to send the sound update to cars made the previous years.

One of my biggest regrets is cancelling my 1 Series order. But they forced a near 13 month wait on me and I just couldn’t hang on to my other car that long. So here I am, watching with vicarious glee as you whip around in what could have been. Great vid, lovely motor!
Small correction concerning the camber of the updated suspension. The camber is now -1° on the front. Was -0°50' before, so the 25% additional camber was duly needed. -2° is the camber on the rear axle.
I've had an M135i for a couple of years. The Gearbox ruins it, Just the lack of response. Approaching a junction, if you let off the throttle and then decide to go, you can literally count to three before the car actually does anything. Same with pulling away. You can sort of cure it by putting the gearbox into sport mode, but then it's revving its arse off all the time. They also put crappy Bridgestone tyres on, so they inspired no confidence at all in the car.
I think this car looks great but i just managed to get an m140i and usually newer is better but theres no way i would trade it for this lol its far from perfect but the potential is huge
@@webfreakz I believe the Gran Coupe is a poor seller so there’s not much of a waiting list. VW dealers currently quoting 9 months just for a standard Polo here in the UK!
Went and test drove a earlier year model of this car yesterday. The Guy let me take it out by myelf from the dealership. Biggest difference from my M240i is the handling. Wow! Does the 135i xdrive stick to the road. It was real wet out and this thing was so sure footed. It just needs a crazier and exhaust and intake. More sound will up the fun factor. Definitely lacks noise and drama. Otherwise it's an awesome bit of kit. I've decided to keep my m240i for another year. Although I wish it handled more like the 135i. You can't beat that engine. I also really like the interior of my car compared to the more newer 'digital' looks
great video, can't wait to get mine... I'm reading that PS4s * marked are only available in Europe currently.. was there any comments during your briefing about the UK spec cars.. Not seen any 2022 cars with Michelin yet...
Great video Joe! I wondered how much the new M135i had adopted the 128ti setup, and you answered that one. I have the 128ti, and ticked the performance tyre option. I ended up with Pirelli P Zeros! So, there is no guarantee that you will get PS4’s on the 128ti if you tick that box. I was told that BMW use a range of performance tyres based on availability at time of manufacture.
@@Carl_Donaldson I think mine have improved with a bit of wear. However, I have seen reviewers claim that the Michelin PS4's have better ride comfort than the Pirelli's, as well as superior grip. Oh well.
I just wonder if this latest 1 series had the same drive train engine layout as the last generation, would it be more respected in this body shape despite some or most hating the grille (though I prefer this grille to the 4 series).
Was considering an a35 hatchback but knew I wouldn’t have even liked it enough to register my private plate on it which then didn’t make any sense to buy In the end went for a motech M135i and I’ve loved it ever since with no regrets!
How can you easily distinguish between this updated version and the previous one? I want to make sure i get these updates when either order a new one or i look for a newish second hand one in a few months time.
Joe can you enquire whether owners of the 2020-21 cars inc the 128ti will be able to get the active sound update too? Many owners are asking on Fb and forums about it but nobody has the contacts to enquire.
I'm a my22 owner and still not convinced the pops and burbles are real (apart from the ones on startup). Fantastic little car though, amazing interior for it's class, and contrary to B58 fans belief selling extremely well.
I have just part ex’d my F40 M135i XDrive. Mine was the 2020 model in Stormbay. I came from having a 2017 F21 120d M Sport as a daily driver. I found the Aisin gearbox to be less responsive and lacked that almost telepathic ability the ZF gearbox had to know exactly what gear to be in. Additionally, what I have now found to be a fairly common issue with the F40 b48 is a rattle/tappy sound under hard acceleration - I have read on various forums that this could be the high pressure fuel pump or wastegate? Apparently the ‘official’ fix is for BMW to provide what is effectively a sound proofing cover if your F40 suffers with this?! Very annoying if you go for a spirited drive with the windows down. It was a staggeringly quick car though when driven on less than ideal roads and weather conditions! I drive a Z4 now which is a night and day difference in terms of gearbox response and performance (good old ZF 8 speed again!). If you are contemplating buying an F40 M135i and are coming from a BMW with a ZF auto box, I would definitely recommend an extended test drive to see what you think about the new Aisin ‘box and also listen for any engine rattle under hard acceleration 😊
Great review Joe! I know this car has got a lot of hate since coming out but it’s great to see how objective you are about it. I’ve got one myself, I did ‘upgrade’ the exhaust within the first few months because it just sounded dead. Also the pops and bangs seem to be totally random, some cars seem to make more than others; mine does it on start-up when it’s already warm but not much more than that. Glad that they’ve upgraded the tyres too as the potenzas are understeer city and I’ve found have been poor for durability. Good car though but like a lot of 4wd hot hatches, a bit clinical and I look forward to driving our other less powerful car more often.
Another brilliant video Joe. Thanks for answering my question by the way, I mentioned your height because a friend of my dads who is quite tall had said that the previous 2 series felt cramped. Anyway, I really like that 220i. I think it just looks right. I think you made a really good point about the 230i. When the F 3 series came out and they introduced the 328i, it looked great. I can remember reading the article on it and I thought they were going to be the way forward. I don't think I've ever seen one. Anyway Joe, you're doing a cracking job and we love your videos. looking forward to the next one.👍
As an owner of a current 2021 135 let's hope these artificial ASD sound and trans updates filter down, would also love to increase front camber, and can't wait to remove these crap Bridgestones for decent rubber.
Im a bit envy of the burbles that the exhaust makes, mine (the 2020 model) does that only on some very rare occasion. But what’s weird to me is that the facelift has already been spottet, why wouldn’t you wait for that then? Also that’s quiet a big amount of dead fly’s on the windscreen, seems like you had fun on the autobahn ;)
I was thinking similar. I have a 2020 M340i and it doesn’ make anything like that noise. There’s a bit of a burble but no crackle or pops. Doesn’t matter what mode it’s in, you never get that overrun sound.
@@leefoster8015 that's totally correct! I own a 2021 uk model, only pops on sports mode warm temp. Interior pops are not enhanced, they're totally fake! After watching the full vid im now wondering if there might be a software update for us Pre-revised M135i XD owners, both pops and bangs, regardless of organic or not and that gear box software update, that'd be nice also. Ive had 2 M240i coupe's in the past and i quite agree with Joe, the B58 coupled to the ZF box was a fantastic piece of work, but i always felt it couls be better and that would be the M2 no doubt. I then changed to my M135i XD and found that this car was a lot more fun and felt so much more planted, no more high speed floatyness and in the corners im damn sure the M135i XD would have the edge over the M240i no doubt. The only thing i wish the M135i did have is another 50 bhp and a little more torque as after driving in the Lake District last week im positive the chasis would love it.
Those 0-60 figures don't sound reliable. The F40 M135i is probably the only model i've seen recently where by the manufacturer quoted figures are accurate. The German's normally understate the 0-60. Very capable car when pitted against the MK7 -7.5 golf, MK3 S3 and the A35. The Golf r MK8 and MK4 S3 have raised the bar again in terms of performance.
@@Lmbarrett83 Well unfortunately for you they are exact, i was there and saw it with my own eyes, infact i did the launches. @Steve Alexander Certainly not unfortunate as my M135i will finally arrive in early June after ordering last July. Of all the reviews I've seen with the car and with the reviewer using specialist timing gear not one has reached your claimed figures. I found with the 2020 version, torque steer is a big problem on gear changes while hard on the accelerator - It's the torque convertor on the gearbox. Especially a problem when encountering adverse camber or potholes
Well, it is annoying, as i own one the previous version... so do i upgrade to an identical looking car with mechanical upgrades. I don't think so. It's just my bad luck. On to another car then!
All them 'optional extras'? Does it come with indicators? Anyway, nice beaver (Leslie Nielson), that could be the design of the car or the person who bough it! Speaking of beavers, did you say the sound is fake? Wow, orgasmic! Oh no, sorry you said "organic"! The colour? Did you say an EXTRA £2500? It reminds me of my baby boys sh@t when he wasn't well! £2500 for that?
Another awesome review 👌 As they have similar base prices and on paper performance - what would you choose for a daily (will never go to track): Base M135i or base Cupra Formentor VZ2? And why.
After a few weeks in an “original” 135 X-drive on 19’s, the flaws (crashy ride, torque steer, clumsy gear change) started to dominate the driving experience unless you were driving 9/10. It’s great with this “tweak” BMW have finalised the development using their customers but they could have done better from day one. By contrast, the all new M240i is so well resolved straight out of the box. Will be sticking with that.
To be fair, the M240i is basically just an M340i/M440i slightly shortened. Those cars were used to iron out all the bugs (granted, there weren't many). This car was all-new at the time it came out.
taking their own BMW M140 as the benchmark and building from Mini Clubman experience then charging >£40k (with key options), they should have done better with the M135i drivetrain refinement and chassis tuning IMO. They have updated things now it seems and didn’t wait for the mid-life “facelift.” Says loads to me. Agree on M240 origins but they delivered something that really hits the mark (apart from smaller rear cabin in a bigger package than the previous M240).
It’s funny how now they start putting the F40 on Michelin 4’s and 4s.. the original Bridgestones that they were coming out of the factory on were atrocious!! I only got 4000 miles out of them and since switching to 4S, they have lasted about 16,000 miles! BMW wouldn’t acknowledge they had made a mistake even with thousands of F40 135i owners saying the same thing!! Great vid, joe.
Mine is due to be built week 20/05/2022 so I’m hoping I get the revised model. Even is I get shitty Bridgestones I’ll just swap them for some proper rubber.
As Joe says, M240 Coupe uses the 3-Series (designed for RWD) platform so there’s no mechanical commonality with the 1 series or 2 series Gran-Coupe platform (designed for FWD), even though both chassis’s can be adapted to utilise 4WD models.
I think this is my next car. Unless does anybody think my 2018 M240i might go up in value one day? Being the last of the rear wheel drive platform for these cars.
Any RWD B58 will become sought after eventually in my opinion (mileage condition dependant). With those cars at the moment it's all about the options. A fully loaded with an individual colour are fetching silly prices. Correction I've been looking at the 340i but same holds true. Did the previous 240i have the option to fit the power and sound kit from BMW? Imagine the noise they produce will be a huge selling point in future.
@@russodean2 interesting. I know the 3 and 4 series had the BMW approved exhaust and power upgrade. Can't really see why it would be different on the 2. Still sounds miles better than anything being made today in stock form. Look after that car and it will have glacial depreciation at worst.

Another great review Joe, and in fact off the back of this very video I went out and bought the very same car in the same colour with MP kit fitted. It was a similar story for the M2C that I gad previously, which also was influenced by your videos!! BMW owe you a fortune I’d say!!
Thanks!
I’m considering to do the same upgrade. I hope Joe can comment on this :)
Finally........ Been waiting for this since you mentioned it on FB or Instagram! So if I'm scheduled a build date sometime in September will it be this updated version or the previous one? 👍
I own M235i and i love it…Straight six has a lovely sound…Can’t wait of yours m2 comp videos👍
Interesting what you say about the original f40 torque steer.I can't say I've experienced it in mine. Maybe I need to drive harder😁
I can’t say I experienced torque steer either, understeer however, there was loads!!
It's not 4WD!
The front quarter camera shot resembles a smiling face with the obvious nostrils, headlights being eyes the lower grill as a smile with the two air vents being dimples. Man is that looking good‼️
Did those updates also come to the m235i gran coupe????
Any experiences/ news on that subject?
@@JL-sl7mq Nope :( I did contact BMW in my country and they told me that they weren't planning to send the sound update to cars made the previous years.

One of my biggest regrets is cancelling my 1 Series order. But they forced a near 13 month wait on me and I just couldn’t hang on to my other car that long. So here I am, watching with vicarious glee as you whip around in what could have been. Great vid, lovely motor!
Can’t wait to do some bits on a São Paulo yellow one
Hey Motech- Whats youre price on supplied and fitted eibach springs on the 2021 m15i X pls?
Small correction concerning the camber of the updated suspension. The camber is now -1° on the front. Was -0°50' before, so the 25% additional camber was duly needed.
-2° is the camber on the rear axle.
where can i have those information? please help bro!
@@andreaalligri901 what do you mean? What information are you looking for?
*This colour bangs car looks very clean* 😍
Joe, surely BMW will be giving existing customer those pops and bangs via software? See no reason why not to?
Let’s hope so
I've had an M135i for a couple of years.
It’s a trait that affects ZF gearboxes not just the Aisin type!🤷🏻♂️
Another great review 👍 I presume these same changes have been made to the M235i Gran Coupe?
Long live the B58
Still keeping my M140i, there is no way this M135i will ever replace it.
I think this car looks great but i just managed to get an m140i and usually newer is better but theres no way i would trade it for this lol its far from perfect but the potential is huge
100%
I orderd the m235i in march and its arriving week 25, will it have the same updates as this car ?? 🤞🏻 Great review Joe keep em coming 😎
that quick? i checked for a regular Golf and it would be Q4
When we built it for order bmw said September build date, but when they sent the order off they got the june build date so i was very happy
Thank you for all the car content Joe.
This review has firmed up decision of whether to opt for a 128ti or go for the M135i.... M135i it is.
Am I right that ticking “performance tyres” simply deletes the standard run-flats?
same here, theyre ok though IMO the PZ4
@@Carl_Donaldson I think mine have improved with a bit of wear. However, I have seen reviewers claim that the Michelin PS4's have better ride comfort than the Pirelli's, as well as superior grip. Oh well.
I just wonder if this latest 1 series had the same drive train engine layout as the last generation, would it be more respected in this body shape despite some or most hating the grille (though I prefer this grille to the 4 series).
How can you tell if your car has the new updates? The cars I'm seeing coming onto UK market are still on Bridgestones
Was considering an a35 hatchback but knew I wouldn’t have even liked it enough to register my private plate on it which then didn’t make any sense to buy
In the end went for a motech M135i and I’ve loved it ever since with no regrets!
How can you easily distinguish between this updated version and the previous one? I want to make sure i get these updates when either order a new one or i look for a newish second hand one in a few months time.

Any experiences/ news on that subject?
I'm a my22 owner and still not convinced the pops and burbles are real (apart from the ones on startup). Fantastic little car though, amazing interior for it's class, and contrary to B58 fans belief selling extremely well.
Me too! I don’t think they’re on the outside at all
same also a 2022 holder. Theres deffo a few pops and gurgles. i think once its broken in it'll get louder. fingers crossed
Picked mine up last weekend, can confirm it came with Bridgestone tyres so not sure that’s a UK thing
Nope I've also got the Bridgestones and I'm in Australia.
Brilliant bit of driving Joe.
So this press car will sound like what the M135i's that will come to the UK?
If only BMW sell the M135i here in America, I'd Buy it right away in the heart beat!

I’m enjoying the sounds Joe 👏I’m very impressed with this M135i 👌
Cracking video joe, getting mine in a few weeks
As an owner of a current 2021 135 let's hope these artificial ASD sound and trans updates filter down, would also love to increase front camber, and can't wait to remove these crap Bridgestones for decent rubber.
Did you manage to get an update for the said things?
@@JL-sl7mq Nothing as yet, tbh I dont think BMW will release any update for the aforementioned, but I dont plan on keeping it long.
It's not real. Only on start-up.
@@leefoster8015 that's totally correct! I own a 2021 uk model, only pops on sports mode warm temp. Interior pops are not enhanced, they're totally fake! I tried revving on idle, pops like mad from speakers in the cockpit but outside there's certainly no pops at all! Quite sure it doesn't pop whilst driving too, can only hear it thru speakers. In summary, pops are NOT enhanced, they're 100% fake.
can you confirm this @Joe Achilles please? @@
@@chunweiong8798 Sadly suspect Joe knows this as he had ability in the video to show exterior pops and vid tried it's best to make the car sound good when exterior was shown. BTW i'm not hating I own a MY22 car same as joe is reviewing and I love it, just wish the car sounded like it could. Great video! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they have lengthened the gear ratios from fifth gear onwards. If you compare you accelerating in this model, compared to an earlier model which autotopnl drove on the autobahn

Any info?
0-60 in my M135i xdrive 2021 ive had at 4.29 and 4.27 seconds so id hope this would be as quick surely....I'll watch the full vid now...So...
The only thing i wish the M135i did have is another 50 bhp and a little more torque as after driving in the Lake District last week im positive the chasis would love it.
what a load of shit.
I dont expect to post the results without critism simply because either you dont launch the same or warm your tires up the same, or the days weather conditions werent the same, so believe what you want.
@Steve Alexander Certainly not unfortunate as my M135i will finally arrive in early June after ordering last July. Of all the reviews I've seen with the car and with the reviewer using specialist timing gear not one has reached your claimed figures. So may be you recorded them, but then I seriously have to question your "specialist timing gear" and conditions. I.e a phone, a down hill slope e.t.c
The car will be quick enough for me and I'm happy they've made the my22 updates. Not sure about the fake interior sound, but I'll reserve my judgement until I hear it for myself.
@@Lmbarrett83 Fortunately, i dont have to justify what i got or how i did it even though i think it would have been a good idea in hindsight to actually record the launches-My bad.
Would have quite liked this updated version with Nardo grey paint.
However, having got mine in 2021 when the PCP was still 2.9%, when discounts were still high, I got an absolute deal on a new storm Bay car, with Pro pack and park assist, for what is an absolute steal in today's market!

awesome video as always. But you have made my life harder i have been looking at these in Australia but like the 2020-21 model but now i want to look at new models😂😂😂😂😂
I found with the 2020 version, torque steer is a big problem on gear changes while hard on the accelerator - It's the torque convertor on the gearbox. Especially a problem when encountering adverse camber or potholes
Put better tyres on.
Still loving my M135i
Great vid as normal Joe. I sold my 69 plate M340i and am awaiting delivery of my M135i. I have to wait until August though ;-(
Challenging the Golf R but still sounds like my old cortina with a blown exhaust compared to my E39 Alpina.
As they have similar base prices and on paper performance - what would you choose for a daily (will never go to track): Base M135i or base Cupra Formentor VZ2? And why.
Hahaha I have the same question. Am deciding whether it’s worth selling the m135i to jump into the Formentor
If you had to choose between the m135i and golf 8r which one would you go for?
If you want outright performance and fun factor MK8 R. BMW is a miles better allrounder and interior and infotainment wins hands down.
BMW. Every. Day. 💪🏽
Even better with some Motech mods 👍🫶🥰

The cabin looked a bit small for you Matey.
Hi when did they update car looking to buy one second hand
With the release of the M240i, I am now curious what they will do with the M140i. Hopefully they go with the rear wheel bias.
Good question. I don‘t see it going up since there‘s m2‘s in Rwd but still won‘t go down significantly much
Any RWD B58 will become sought after eventually in my opinion (mileage condition dependant).
@@leefoster8015 yeh it's fully loaded in estoril blue. Just a standard exhaust. Not M performance.
@@russodean2 interesting. I know the 3 and 4 series had the BMW approved exhaust and power upgrade. Can't really see why it would be different on the 2. Still sounds miles better than anything being made today in stock form. Look after that car and it will have glacial depreciation at worst.
