Ford is one of the best manufacturers in terms of price and what you get. Don't underestimate what's underneath a car, Ford's are incredibly safe in terms of grip/chassis/stability.
If the UK spec is similar to the rest of Europe one, then it is not actually true. The basic AC is well automatic, albeit one zone only, no auto air-recirculation, no air vents in the back. The optional adds all of that and is two zones. Still better than Audi A3, where you have to pay for 3 zones if you want your seats heated.

Yep, and assuming F20 derivative that was great car design with RWD, I had the 120d xDrive. Prices are insane these days, guess we’re paying for the production of EVs that no one is buying. In Jan 2019 my old F30 320d xDrive M Sport Shadow Edition saloon with options cost 42k.
Because most people don’t see £ 40,000 plus, all they see £300 plus a month, so that’s why car companies can charge what they want for a car, because they know people will pay it monthly payments
That amount of money for that small of a car is insane. We get the 3 series M sport with all the options in the United States for the exact same price as that 1 series he’s testing. Incredible.
The BMW 1 Series is a perfect example of a car that has lost its aesthetic appeal over the generations. This latest model, in particular, feels like a real letdown. I’m not usually someone who romanticizes the past or thinks everything was better before, but this 1 Series design just doesn’t do it for me. It’s disappointing to see how far it’s strayed from its roots. What’s wrong with you BMW?
For me personally the worst dissapontment was the change to fwd from rwd and yes the 1st gen looked the best. Luckily there is still the 2 series coupe the car that shares nothing with 1 series or 2 GC and is a shortened version of 4 series without the beaver front and almost 4.8m length. The only fun rwd (longitudinally placed engine) Bmw at 4.5m, still perfect.
I work with a guy who is an ex bmw engineer. What he told me was that unlike the old days (90s early 2000s) it costs BMW almost nothing in production between a BMW M sport body kit car and a normal bmw car (true M cars like the M3/M5 are different). Basically the M-trim cars cost almost nothing more to produce than standard cars, they literally just are different looking parts and the production numbers are huge so its not like it costs the more to make Msport cars due to low production. In the 90s/2000s M trim cars were actually very low production so they did actually cost significantly more to build. So essentially, its just a money making excuse, BMW knows they can't charge what they want for the cars, so they sell these "M" trim model upgrades to make the buyer think they are getting a much more valuable car, but its basically just a version of bumpers and plastic bits that the base car could have had as stock, since its pretty much purely aesthetics and very minor at that. Very few base model BMWs are sold these days, M trim cars are what the company pushes and they are actually much more common than a lowly base model without those options.
Hmm you forgot that on M sport models other than bumper kit, wheels, black roof lining, and other non important drivers stuff. You do get actual driving enhancements, sports lower suspension, more direct steering rack, quicker gearbox (software) and on rear wheel drive models (the only worth buying Bmw’s) an lsd (I’m talking about 2 series coupe). So there is definitely a price point difference on those driver parts. But up until recently it was possible to order these specific driver focused parts without the bumper part not anymore.
The same is for every German car for many years. What changed is that the standard trim has become significantly less designed/beautiful, almost forcing you to tick the M-kit. 10 years ago I often preferred the standard kit, while nowadays a standard trim (e.g., 5-series) looks like they purposely made it look cheaper.
German car industry is a scam indsutry for sure, the best thing to do is buy a used car that has done 20k-30k miles and price gonna go down for 30%. Thats the only way i would buy a new car. I have a 313 ps x4 35D 2017 m packet with 70k miles and apart from all screen interior it has all the things and some more options that this 42k bmw has and i bought it for half of the price with a 3.0 diesel motor.
The annoying thing here is that the only reason manufacturers are getting rid of knobs is purely down to cost saving and basically trying to convince us it's due to technological advances!

The A pillars look expensive, the screens are highest res in class, the steering is amazing in feel and looks, the seats are best in class, the seating position too. Sound proofing too. Most importantly it feels rock solid, not a single piece of trim in this has any give or play or squeak to it, which is not the case in any other car in class. Go touch stuff in the A3 or A class and then compare it to the 1 series. There's nothing about this interior that isn't best in class. As a previous gen 128ti owner, I think the biggest problem with this new car is: NO iDRIVE CONTROLLER. (Well done Matt for being one of the few reviewers to actually mention this). NO HEATING CONTROLS. NO GEARSTICK. I do not want to stab at a touch screen on the move. End of. And no BMW, I do not want to talk to my car either. It's one of the main reasons I bought my 128ti over its Merc and Audi competitors. BMW manage this with their non-Mini variants. Would it really be so expensive to have iDrive? Why no gearstick? I use my car in manual a lot, and there are certain instances (tight corners), when you can't access the paddles easily. I have a gearstick as a back-up. This new gen has a stubby button thing instead. No thanks. I'm so glad I bought my previous gen 128ti when I did. I have proper heating controls, a volume dial for the stereo, shortcut buttons for different radio stations, buttons for heated seats, temp control and fan speed. I can do this without stabbing at a touch screen. It's SAFER. If stabbing at mobile phones is illegal on the move, why is it suddenly OK to do so with built-in touchscreens? Money. Cost saving. Nothing to do with what the customer wants. And finally, there's just too big a gap between the 1.5 3cyl and the 135 now. Why no 128ti? Looks like until BMW listen to their customers, I'll be hanging onto my 128ti for a very long time.
In the exact same situation as you and couldn't agree with you more. To top it all off my 128ti with the pro pack was cheaper than this just a year ago. Think I'll be hanging on to it for a while now.
The ‘old’ gen is objectively a better car. New cars are just becoming too expensive to develop with all the regulation (emission, safety, cyber security), that in combination with high inflation strangely results skimping on features that actually matter to consumers.
just one second 0:01 ... and I'm already choking. What is that? A FocusFabiaCeed?? The people at BMW have really lost their minds. And their connection to customers in Europe. I’m sure they didn’t shut the bonnet properly. If you see the beginning of the video, the bonnet is flush with the bumper. And at 3:24 you can see that the bonnet has two latches. One of the latches probably didn’t latch properly.
5 years ago, my well specced M140i cost £29k. And for that, you got RWD, the legendary B58, 340hp standard and the option of having it in a manual. £42k for this just seems even more ridiculous knowing that you don’t get any of those things, and exactly half the power
I much prefer the old interior, had the previous gen 1series and test-drove this one. The old interior was much more ergonomic. The screen made more sense and honestly looked classier, especially the digital dash. Drive was honestly a bit better on the new one. Not objective, but personally I like a physical gearknob much more compared to how they did it now. It feels less tactile. I know its an automatic so some people would say you're crazy for wanting tactilitty but still.
Like somehow, despite the better feel, the interior feels cheaper and more soulless because there is less. You get 1 screen (again less ergonomic) compared to two, the emptiness where the gearknow and control wheel used to be. Just my feeling however.

You can say that about all bmws now
For me personally the worst dissapontment was the change to fwd from rwd and yes the 1st gen looked the best.

Everyone complaining about price yet a Ford Focus starts from £28500 for a 1l eco boost. The 1 Series is practically no more expensive than an equivalent A3 or A Class. Upon configuring a Focus ST Line X and a 120 M Sport with the same options, there’s only £1000 difference… people need to accept that things are more expensive than they once were.
I’m 100% sure with 43k you can get a new A35
While it may be true, and yes things get more expensive. You would also expect they become better. In this case you can objectively say the previous 1-series is a better quality product AND is/was cheaper.

@@thatkid.b1480a brand new A35 AMG would cost you £46000 at the list price. A new M135 would be £43000. Now yes, both these cars are standard spec and both will have offers available on them. We’re forgetting that the 120 in the video has in excess of £10000 in optional extras to make it the price that it is.
@@Loekie-de-leeuwI own the F40 (previous generation) and I can say that things like the lower door card plastic and things that are mentioned in the video are exactly the same in the last car as they are in this new model. The car comes with more things standard than the previous model but that goes unnoticed. I can see why people say the interior is cheaper by just having the screens and no other buttons.
