    Basically:
    -Use a wide hat that covers your entire face (including lips)
    -Use spf lip balm (can be mineral or chemical) Cotz and Sun Bum good mineral options
    -Protect your lips with Vaseline when using other products in face
    -Stop chewing gum (saliva detrimental)
    -Stop licking your lips (it does NOT help moisturize)
    -Use Vaseline before bed to stop water loss while sleeping

      I think it’s more about what not to do than doing all types of treatments. I just gave up alcohol and caffeine (not easy) and my skin is looking better than ever.

      I agree, and personally, the less I do, the happier my skin is. It is an industry, after all, and I'm not convinced that more is better. I use a cream cleanser, a probiotic serum, and a korean spf. My skin is so much smoother and more hydrated. When I used vitamin c and acids and retinols, even on a very conservative schedule, my skin was always irritated. My younger skin loved ahas and salicylic, though.

    Toothpaste was my issue. I had really cracked lips in the corners of my mouth that would start bleeding. I was using Sensodyne extra whitening. I wasnt sure if it was the fluoride, the mint flavoring or the whitening ingredients. I changed to a fluoride free, non-mint kids toothpaste til i healed up. Then started using regular Colgate- i was fine with the fluoride and mint flavoring. Then i started using the colgate whitening. My lips are dryer, but not nearly asbad as they were with the sensodyne. Honestly, if you're at the end of your rope and your lips are cracked no matter what you do and you've tried everything else... try changing your toothpaste, including changing to a non- whitening version

    I had painfully dry lips this winter, and that's when I discovered O'keefe's lip repair. After several failed attempts with other products, this is the only balm that healed my cracked and red lips. I still layer it under petrolatum in the summer, and they started making an SPF option that I need to try. I recommend it to anyone who's struggling to keep their lips hydrated in the winter esp. if you run a furnace that cooks ALL the humidity out of the air.

  • @alikaperdue
    @alikaperdue 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Yes @13:55. I use the plain petrol jelly method. It woks so well for me. But when I suggest this to others, they think I'm nuts.
    My secret is to use a Q-tip to extract the jelly from its tub and then apply from q-tip to fingers to lips. I also open my mouth wide so the lips are fully extended and the Vaseline gets into every crevasse of my lips.
    I don't need it everyday, like I used to with lip balm. I only apply when I feel dry lips and it fixes them with one or two applications. When needed, it feels so good.

    The sides of my lips were continually cracking open and bleeding. Every time I opened my mouth, they would crack open. They would not heal. My dermatologist asked if I had changed toothpaste. I had. She recommended that I go back to my usual toothpaste saying that she sees many people that are allergic to certain ingredients in toothpaste! I was shocked! But…she was right. She gave me some ointment to use at night until healed. Still using my old name brand toothpaste and no more cracking!

    I have always struggled with the texture of pure Vaseline. Recently I tried Prequel’s Skin Utility Ointment, and it has that in it but also ingredients that make it feel much smoother on the skin so I’ve been exclusively using it as a lip balm. I wish I could take it with me wherever I go but the tube is a little too large for that.
    Also, the last tip reminds me, for the last couple years what I’ve done in a pinch when my lips are chapped: I wipe off any lip balm residue left, wet a finger with just plain water, and wipe the water on my lips and let it soak in. Before my lips completely dry out I apply whatever lip product I have at that moment to seal in the moisture. It works great as a temporary fix to make my lips not chapped anymore even if I’m stuck only using flavored chapstick.

    As an adolescent, my sister and I did multiple rounds of Accutane for many years. A side effect of Accutane is dry lips, thus my love affair with moisturizing lip balms began. My derm (who is highly regarded nationally), advised me to stay away from any lip ointments that contain wax (ie: "Chapstick") bc it only fills in the dry lip and is not absorbed and therefore does not hydrate your lips. Also, drink water! I'm surprised Dr Dray did not mention this. Make sure you are drinking enough water every day. It benefits not only your lips but your hands and face.

    I have never understood why cosmetic companies don’t automatically put sunscreen in their lip products-or at least give you that option. I would definitely pay more for the lip protection.

    Dr. Dray, I've been struggling with lip hydration and I just bought 2 of your suggestions, thank you. I've been using CeraVe healing ointment for years, but I'd probably be better off with plain petroleum jelly. Although for me, petroleum jelly tastes awful, I think it irritates my tongue. I wear a CPAP mask at high pressure and the rush of air has wreaked havoc on my lips. If I use CeraVe healing ointment, it's gone by morning. I've tried mouth-taping using a silicone scar sheet that I cut into the right size. It's the best option although my lips are still wrinkly. I know I'm sensitive to adhesive and it might be drying to my lips, but the physical coverage protects my lips from the drying of the air pressure. Is there a brand of silicone scar sheets that wouldn't have irritating adhesive?
    I somewhat press my lips together before placing the tape, but I think my own saliva is drying to my lips as well. I can't seem to win. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
    Thank you!

      @ellek8703 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @OldLadyintheShoe Mouth taping is becoming common. If one wears cpap and their mouth parts open while sleeping, the air will leak between the face and the mask and wake you up.

    OMG the nail adhesive point. I dont usually wear fake nails, but for commencement I decided to wear stick ons but they werent sticky enough so I used a nail glue and a few hours later I was itching all over and looked like a tomato. The palms of my hands were itching so bad and everywhere I touched was swollen. Thankfully, the allergy manifested well after ceremony and it subsided with benadryl (nurse's advice).

    I really am confused as to why spf is not standard in lip products & very rarely discussed. The rates of WFH are not 60%, it’s still statistically a small group. If people are leaving home & returning every day, why do no beauty TH-camrs use spf regularly on their lips? I never get chapping & that’s all I do, but no one on TH-cam goes hard for lip sunscreen. What gives? Is it too affordable & therefore inappropriate for the TH-cam economy lol?
