The song was written in 1968 the year before she married George Jones. When you learn of the things she went through while married to her first husband and Mr. Jones, you start to understand what she was writing about.
She had some tumultuous marriages for sure, but that doesn't make the sentiment of the song any less degrading to someone in a toxic relationship. Now, if its sung from the point of view of a family relation or friends giving bad advice to someone that is in a toxic relationship and the protagonist feels trapped in the marriage, then clearly that takes a different spin on the song. But we know that Wynette wasn't passive and quite a strong person in her relationships, willing to leave a man if it wasn't working. That's why the lyrics are so problematic nowadays, back when it was released it was the thinking was that women should endure and basically be chained to the kitchen sink.
@@Liofa73 Sorry that is complete bullsh*t. That wasn't the thinking at all. I know that is what is taught to young people these days, and it is very problematic and why so many of them end up miserable, scared and alone. The vast majority of men are very protective, honest one women men. The big problem is a shortage of strong, honest, hardworking women. It takes far more courage and intelligence to trust and form a partnership than it is to be alone and independent. If you want to share good times then you need to share the struggles too. You cant run away like a coward, when times get tough. That is what this song is about. I know a lot of people with long happy marriages, and they nearly all have a story about a time when they were down, and didn't know where their next meal was coming from. It is sad that so many women born into this age will never know what it is like to be in a loving relationship, because they are just too scared.
@@TheToledoTrumpton Legitimate fears. When is the last time a woman got angry at you and you had to worry about being physically harmed? They feel it walking to their car alone. "He'll Never Take the Place of You" from the same album, and "Come on Home" (from the DIVORCE album) both also feature that spine-tingling (wallpaper-peeling) power. She could go from tense, pensive, and forlorn to a tremendous crescendo and never move a muscle. She did, at first, say she hated the high notes in "Stand By Your Man" and thought she "sounded like a cat being swung by its tail." Of course, being a co-writer on it, the royalties helped her learn to love that song.
I didn't realise she died so young at age 55 years. Mind, it said she was plagued with illnesses throughout her life. Great song. Remember it well from my youth [I'm 62] as my parents played it often.

Dolly, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette did an album together not too long before Tammy passed on at a way too early age. There is a great CMA awards show performance with the three of them singing Silver Threads, Golden Needles which is a country classic.
You can’t react to Tammy Wynette without listening to “Justifed and Ancient” by The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. It’s an amazing song and very confusing. It is a modern piece and her last hit. The KLF are odd but it’s a smash hit.
I definitely wanted to recommend Justified and Ancient. She left her comfort zone of country music and joined up with the UK's KLF to be the front woman of a crazy mix of techno dance music, rock, rap with a tribal flavor. You will be shook!
Many years ago at a kiss concert, they were goofing around and started singing a song that wasn’t theirs. They sang stand by your man by Tammy Wynette. 😁
LOL!!! The fact that you literally are reacting to this after hearing it in Sleepless in Seattle is cracking me up! Tammy Wynette was one of the all time Country greats. RIP Miss Tammy!! You totally missed Celine Dion's cover of "When I Fall In Love" duet with Clive Griffin that played during the credits.
You need to listen to Tammy Wynette song called Justified an ancient it is a collaboration she did in the early nineties with a group called klf they were dance music back then and when these two got together to me they created a little bit of magic listen to Tammy Wynette as she's never been heard before look for the official video please don't let me down check it out
Tammy is my muse. So glad you’ve found her. She meant every word she sang, and what a voice she had. Cryin’ Steel Guitar, Til I Can Make It On My Own, Alove and Well. There’s a huge catalogue and not a bad song. ❤️
I used to have a country sweetheart that I had a crush on her name was Halley halley done. Shave, it's a mind. Cesar, a fresh country girl, you could tell you. Alright alright but i'm sure you could sing a song now how are you
Ms Wynette has a roster of classic country hits but for something completely different check out her unexpected collab with a group called KLF called "Justified and Ancient"
Good for you Amber, I could see your face (reaction) when she said "but if you love him, you'll forgive him". Just to let know Tammy took a lot of flack from the feminists back then. I remember my mother who played a lot of her records (and country), not being found of the lyrics. DIVORCE, I Don't Want to Play House, You & Me, Till I Can Make It on My Own are other great songs by Tammy.
I saw her reaction too. Woman today do not agree with those lyrics. Me included. I had 3 children and left my alcoholic husband. That was in 1997. They grew up happier and are married with children of their own now.
Tammy was given the Nickname "The First Lady Of Country Music" after becoming the first female country singer to sell a million copies of a single album, which was "Tammy's Greatest Hits" in 1970.
Tammy is amazing singer. But if you want to hear and see something amazing check out the video of “Justified and Ancient” from the British electronic band KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. It was thought to be an odd pairing. But it was dance magic.
I love "I Don't Wanna Play House"; it's a tear-jerker. Also, "D.I.V.O.R.C.E"!! I'm so glad y'all loved her/her voice---I'm so excited to see you do some more!!
She addressed the social controversies of the day (1960s/70s). I remember when "DIVORCE" was banned from the radio. Also, Stand By Your Man was also extremely controversial when it was released, and still is today. (Remember when First Lady Hillary Clinton famously said "I'm not some little woman baking cookies and standing by my man").

Remember when you watched "The Blues Brothers"? This is one of the two songs Jake and Elwood sang in the country and western bar -- when they sang behind the chicken wire to avoid the beer bottles. Tammy co-wrote this song. She started out as a hairdresser in Red Bay, Alabama -- about 60 miles from where I live. She won the 1970 Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female for this song, and it spent three weeks at number one on the country charts, then crossed over to number 19 on the pop charts. To say this song is a blockbuster is an understatement. Love the video as always. Peace!
Even brought up in London, immigrants from France and Africa.......country and western was our Sundays, my dad would blast this tune and dance with mum and us all x x .......memories!
Tammy was known as the "First Lady of Country Music", and she, Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn were the three biggest female stars of country music during the 1960s and '70s and together, they redefined what it means to be a female country music artist. Tammy Was married to George Jones from 1969 - 75. Her 1969 GREATEST HITS album was the first album by a female country artist to sell over one million copies. "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "Apartment Number Nine", "You're Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad", "Singing My Song" and "You and Me" were some of her other big hits. She passed away in 1998, after a number of years of failing health.
Though not really the kind of music Sassy was known for, I have had "Broken Hearted Melody" going through my head for a few days now. Sarah's version of "Poor Butterfly" is so tender.
Lyle Lovett did a memorable cover of this, singing the same lyrics but from a pleading male perspective begging her to stand by him. It honored the original while giving it a whole different meaning.
Tammy Wynette definitely deserved the title of First Lady of country music. For a while Her and George Jones were considered country music royalty and a lot of their songs were based on their turbulent love affair. A beautiful song written by Tammy and sung by Martina McBride as a tribute to her after her pasting called till I can make it on my own I know is something worthy of a reaction. Much love and smiles robsquad family. ❤😊
Late in her career Tammy did a fantastic track with British dance rock terrorists The KLF called "Justified And Ancient" - they went to Nashville to produce her vocals and it introduced her to a whole new audience
Huge Hit back in the Day, Duet with Barbra Mandrel, and George Jones , Jones a Country Legend, who was Married to Tammy Wynette, ( I was Country, when Country wasn't Cool).
❤😊awesome song and great singer love all of her songs, thanks Jay and Amber for sharing these I enjoy watching them. Happy New Year to you both and to the family from me and my family.
Do you guys remember, in the Blues Brothers movie, the BBs sang this song while they were at Bob's Country Bunker. Jake says "We'd like to do a favorite of the horn sections, we hope it's one of yours." The whole place gets mellow, everyone is squeezing their significant other, but there's one lonely guy, looks to me to be a truck driver, and he's just cry'in in his beer. There were no horns in the song so I guess that's why it was a favorite of the horn sections.
This song was rated number 1 of the last century with ex husband George Jones He Stopped Loving Her Today #2 with Patsy Cline Crazy #3. Do some of Tammy and George 's duets.
RSR heard this in a movie, but the first time wasn't "Sleepless in Seattle". The first time they heard it was in "The Blues Brothers". Jake and Elwood brought the entire club to tears singing "Stand by your Man", and RSR didn't really realize what they were watching at the time. They didn't "get" the joke. This similar circumstance plays out fairly often in their movie reactions. "Forest Gump", "Back to the Future", etc. Hey RSR, search TH-cam for the Blues Brother's short version now that you finally understand the proper context.
Jay and Amber, did you know that Tammy returned to the Hot 100 in 1991 in collaboration with a group called KLF? In November 1991, the single Justified & Ancient (Stand by the JAMs) was released, featuring the lead vocals by Tammy, introduced in the sleevenotes as "the first lady of country.” The song hit #11 and also #2 on the dance chart! You really must listen!
I remember that. It felt like such a special song because of the country lyrics, pop or whatever for the chorus, a little rhythmic rapping. _Justified & Ancient_ it's fantastic!
One of the worst things to happen to Country music was when they decided to drop the word Western from their vocabulary. It used to be called Country and Western Music all the time and the Western influences were a big part of what made it great, moving away from that area of Country music was a sad mistake.
OH GOODY GOOD. Don't even have to listen I LOVE, I ADORE. Just GREAT --THANK YOU Maybe D-I-V-I-O-R-C-E ! Just a hint. IT WILL MAKE YOU WEEP. Damp eyes. Tammy's Greatest Hits LP is wonderful One more you will adore is "My Elusive Dreams"--Duet w/ her husband George Jones.
You feel Tammy's songs more than you hear them. She went through a lot of pain in her life and it comes out of her when she sings. 'Til I Can Make It On My Own is my favorite song of hers because it just might be the most vulnerable song I've ever heard. I won't repeat all the other songs that everyone else is requesting, but I know you would be amazed by many of them.
I heard that little Tammy had 30 Number One albums in a row. That's a hell of a row. Her first hit, "Apartment Number 9" is more subtle but way worth a listen.

When Loretta Lynn first heard Tammy Wynette on the radio, she said, now I have some competition.
I am not a country , but she has been in my life as a kid. Beautiful ❤❤❤
Yeah Save this app. So I want my app so. Been my baby doll since I was learned doppers always loved
She was made to the legend George George Jones. When George and told me do a song together. It's gold, it's golden George and George jones. Tell me why not do a song called golden ring. It's got to go denering to it all right ay
When when Shayla George Jones? George Jones has a song all about it. A grand tour, a grand tour? That's the graham taylor ask about telling me how I?
Dolly, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette did an album together not too long before Tammy passed on at a way too early age. There is a great CMA awards show performance with the three of them singing Silver Threads, Golden Needles which is a country classic.
Yes, and Ms. Lynn forgot her words. Lol...she laughed it off like she usually did.
In an Internet pole a few years ago, this song was voted "Most country song of all time". This song is Perfection
You can’t react to Tammy Wynette without listening to “Justifed and Ancient” by The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. It’s an amazing song and very confusing. It is a modern piece and her last hit. The KLF are odd but it’s a smash hit.
She's the Queen of Mu Mu Land.
I definitely wanted to recommend Justified and Ancient. She left her comfort zone of country music and joined up with the UK's KLF to be the front woman of a crazy mix of techno dance music, rock, rap with a tribal flavor. You will be shook!
Totally agree
Agreed. British electronic classic with Tammy Wynette on vocals!!
Absolutely!! React to this song, please!
After more than 50 years this song still makes several all time top 10 country music charts. It defines a country classic.
Country Queen…other suggestions of hers “Apartment #9” “Till I Can Make It On My Own” “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad”
I had the pleasure of growing up listening to these great ladies,, my mum played them daily…❤
What a hot doppers, what a hot. I had typers on. I was in love with tammy and i've never lost it never
Wait nights more this year country music. It's still the right way okay?
I used to have a country sweetheart that I had a crush on her name was Halley halley done. Shave, it's a mind. Cesar, a fresh country girl, you could tell you. Alright alright but i'm sure you could sing a song now how are you
You should listen to the duet Tammy and George did called Golden Ring. Their voices are so different, but man do them blend beautifully.
Beautiful and at the same time tragic song sung from the heart by an angel.
This song was featured in Blues Brothers movie. The Blues Brothers sang it.
I think this and "Rawhide" were the only country songs they knew
This is the third time they’ve heard a portion of this song.
The Good Ole Blues Brothers Boys Band
I still do the choreography every time I hear this song.
@@isnamthere4690Live at Bob’s Country Bunker! Classic.
This is the ringtone I have for my husband. It just makes me smile everytime.
Ms Wynette has a roster of classic country hits but for something completely different check out her unexpected collab with a group called KLF called "Justified and Ancient"
I remember that song with KLF, it was a top 40 pop hit for them in the early 90s.
@@chrisoakley5830No. 2 in the UK
One of my favorites of hers is “Another Chance.” She kicked his butt out & is having some fun!
Love her, Till I can make it on my own is Beautiful!❤
If you've seen The Blues Brothers movie, they sang this song in the country bar. Had the cowboys cryin' in their beer.
I think the words, are "but if you love him, you'll forgive him".
@@catwhisperer9489 Yep that's it, thanks.
That D.I.V.O.R.C.E. song came out around the time my parents got divorced. My mom couldn't stand to listen to it.
I saw her reaction too. Woman today do not agree with those lyrics. Me included. I had 3 children and left my alcoholic husband. That was in 1997. They grew up happier and are married with children of their own now.
@@mickdenis6630 👍
I took my mom to see her in concert with Randy Travis in 1990. Tammy put on a great show in her 70s what a lady.
I've not heard this song in eons.I forget that incredible voice
She grew up in Fulton, Mississippi, so she was born with that special twang
Tanya Tucker. Her voice is unique and awesome
She's one of my favorite singers.
Tammy Wynette's "Till I can make it on my own" is a classic, this is her best vocal performance in my opinion.
It was actually a pretty big hit for KLF and Tammy in the early 90s.
@@chrisoakley5830 Yes it hit #2 in the UK and #11 in the US.
Great singer and LOVE that song.Glad you found her.

I'm a tough guy, and this has me ballin like a baby - every time.

I use to sit in my brothers truck back in the day and listen to Ms. Tammy on the 8 track with his speakers wide open 😂😂 the beautiful , glorious 70s ♥️♥️
Peace!
Country singer " Lyle Lovett " had a hit with this song in 1989. Please check out Tammy Wynette with KLF on the song " Justified and Ancient ".
Now y'all gotta watch "The Blues Brothers" and see how this sing hits in all generations.
Please one day to Sarah Vaughan reaction. One of the best voices in American history.
Yes!!!! The live performance of “So Many Stars” at the Grammys is a classic.

Though not really the kind of music Sassy was known for, I have had "Broken Hearted Melody" going through my head for a few days now. Sarah's version of "Poor Butterfly" is so tender.
Amber 😂 I don't think I've ever seen anyone roll their eyes sideways before.
Loretta, Dolly and Tammy - The Queens of classic country music.
Lyle Lovett did a memorable cover of this, singing the same lyrics but from a pleading male perspective begging her to stand by him. It honored the original while giving it a whole different meaning.
The Blues Brothers covered this in the movie - Tammy also did a cameo with The KLF Justified and Ancient - check it out!
I love Tammy hers was the very first voice I full in love with,I was just a child 💞 😍🤩
I was never heavy into country, but I always loved this song, the voice and the steel guitar. Also nice chord changes.
My favorite Tammy Wynette song is Til I Can Make It on My Own. Trust me, you will love it.
There are some amazing covers of it
My favorite Tammy song!!!
@@GeekyGirl80 Martina McBride sings a beautiful cover version on a CD of country music standards.
Late in her career Tammy did a fantastic track with British dance rock terrorists The KLF called "Justified And Ancient" - they went to Nashville to produce her vocals and it introduced her to a whole new audience
Truly a beautiful voice and an iconic song. If you haven't reacted to Patsy Cline, she's who great country singers call the greatest.
Till I Can Make It On My Own should be your next selection from Ms. Wynette
What a great song and reaction.
The LOOK on Ambers face when she sings "if you love him, you'll forgive him"............CLASSIC
PLEASE listen to Tammy Wynette - Still Around.
It’s so haunting and moving. It will touch your soul!!!!!
If there was ever a classic country and western tune, this is the one! 😊
Damp eyes. Tammy's Greatest Hits LP is wonderful
One more you will adore is "My Elusive Dreams"--Duet w/ her husband George Jones.
She has a lot of great tracks…
"Til I Can Make It on My Own"
You'll love it
You feel Tammy's songs more than you hear them.
Great song and singer. Quality stereo recording. A classic for sure.
Love this and love your channel! Wishing you both a wonderful New Year keep up the amazing work you do!
I remember getting ready for school and the country hour would be on and this was a regular on. Love this song.
In my opinion one of the queens of country
I know you like storytelling check out Red Sorvine Teddybear or Phantom 309 old old school country
I heard that little Tammy had 30 Number One albums in a row. That's a hell of a row. Her first hit, "Apartment Number 9" is more subtle but way worth a listen.
One of the most convincing voices you've ever heard. Wow. I've never thought of it that way, but yes. It's so piercing and honest.
