You guys picked the studio version which was absolutely correct. There is a video of them and the lady is gorgeous, but it was her first time in front of the cameras and she was a bit nervous and self conscious and it took away from the overall experience a little bit. Love the gently calm vibes of the late 50's and early 60's. A must ------ is the song "Rhythm of the Rain" by the Cascades. PLEASE

One of the most famous Brazilian Bossa Nova songs ever written and recorded. Astrud had never sung professionally before this. Originally this was recorded as a longer version with both Astrud and her husband João Gilberto singing (which I have that version on CD). But when Stan Getz (The sax player) heard it, he insisted that Astrude sing it by herself and they shortened the song for release as a single with just her vocal. When it was done, Stan told them, "This is your hit record!"

That's Joao you hear humming at the beginning. On the long version Joao sang his part in Portuguese and Astrud sang her part in English. That's another reason they decided to release the shorter version as a single with Astrud singing in English. In addition to the general rule of thumb that singles not be longer than about 3 to 3-1/2 minutes for radio play. (This one being just under 3 minutes at 2 minutes and 47 seconds long)

@@blackblake3658 His hit? I can't agree to that. I'd put his and Astrud's contributions as more like between 50/50 and 75/25 towards Astrud. Not that I don't don't like Stan Getz's music - it's just that the voice here really takes the lead, with Getz in support. Her voice is so magical in its seductive simplicity, it makes the song what it is. Just imagine anyone else singing it, and you can see it wouldn't have the same exceptional impact, even with Getz playing his heart out out.

This is Bossa Nova! This was very big in the 60's. Actually, this is the second half of the song. The first half is Joao Gilberto with a spoken poem (in Portuguese), then Astrid comes in with her lovely voice. The part you played was what was on the radio back in the day. It was a huge hit back then. Stan Getz was legendary on saxophone. I loved your reaction to the whole thing and particularly when the sax came in the first time!
You should react to Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 performing Mas que nada. My favorite is the video introduced by Eartha Kitt, just because I love her voice! That woman could purr! (Fun fact: she played Cat Woman in the original Batman series!). th-cam.com/video/BrZBiqK0p9E/w-d-xo.html She also did the Christmas song Santa Baby! Another fun fact is that samba is almost a spiritual thing in Brazil. It's a dance form and can almost be expressed as a way of life.

UGH! This is the dreaded shortened "RADIO EDIT" version! It's just horrid! They leave out Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto's amazing vocals!
    Anyway...
I love bossa nova! It's my favorite musical genre EVER! And there are SO MANY undiscovered gems in bossa nova that are absolute musical delights! Astrud Gilberto's wispy, sultry, Portuguese lilt fit so well into that 1960s loungey scene, and her sincere delivery of every song she sang only intensified the bossa nova mystique and its cool harmonic and rhythmic interplay!
ALSO, BTW... There really is an actual "Girl From Ipanema". Her name is Heloisa Pinheiro. The song's writers, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes used to always go drinking at this one bar near Ipanema Beach near Rio de Janeiro, and every day they'd see this one beautiful young girl walking past the bar and across the street to go to the store for her mother. They asked her who she was and she told them, and then they wrote the song about her!

Astrud's voice is creamy smooth and flows like liquid gold on this song. It is striking how her voice overall has a natural timbre as to even sound like a saxophone.

Garota de Ipanema, great! This one was a collaboration between American Saxophonist Stan Getz and the Brazilian duo Joao (pronounced Yao) Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Gilberto was the guitarist and Jobim was the pianist. During the session, it was decided to add a vocal, but, the only person available that could translate the Portuguese (Brazilian) lyrics, and speak English well enough, was Joao's wife, Astrud (Astrid), who was not a professional singer. Her plaintive and and untrained voice was a perfect fit. Astrud passed away just this last June, after beginning a singing career with this song.

Okay guys, I'm going to recommend an artist that you've probably never heard of. And they come from a genre that you've barely covered at all. Yet it's one of your favorites. This artist comes from the jazz world, and you might say they're a crooner. Except this crooner is a woman. I'm speaking of NANCY WILSON (not the one that comprised one-half of the rock duo called Heart, but the NANCY WILSON who was a jazz singer). She was an artist of my parents' generation (and I'm 70) -- a contemporary of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Maartin. And yet in these two videos I'm going to share with you, she's dripping with sexuality. Just a drop-dead gorgeous woman who, I would discover decades later, could sing me to bed any time she wanted. These two performances were from 1960s television shows. One was from "Hollywood Palace," a weekly variety show that aired on Saturday nights on ABC-TV. Not sure where the other one was taped, although it might well have been from her own TV show, The Nancy Wilson Show. She also made numerous appearances (as an actress) on many TV series including The FBI, Hawaii Five-O, and others, not to mention the dozens of appearances she made as a singer on different variety shows like The Carol Burnett Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and others too numerous to mention.
Both of these songs are awesome and I know you'll be captivated by each of them:
NANCY WILSON -- "The Very Thought of You" (an "American Songbook" classic that was covered by dozens of artists): th-cam.com/video/RRKP-qeJvVU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=biusBBqOj_VwrFLH
NANCY WILSON -- "How Glad I Am" (one of Nancy's biggest hits): th-cam.com/video/Wj05EY2aP7I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KmOzSFrqYOzLDOnT
And oh, by the way, if that interests you at all, check out one of the greatest jazz singers who ever lived, the great Sarah Vaughan (a.k.a., "Sassy") singing the classic, "Misty." This performance, recorded live in Sweden in 1964, is one of the greatest live performances caught on tape.
SARAH VAUGHAN -- "Misty" (She was my dad's favorite female singer. Decades later, I finally realized why.) th-cam.com/video/lJXLqAutql4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JhyfmR8nfauDvhak&t=50
These songs would definitely add some spice to your channel, and would certainly make a great choice for "Female Fridays."

In the 60's there was a string of great songs like this! Most of it came from Brazil, the Bossa Nova style. It was also called 'Bachelor pad" music, and you can imagine why, hahaha!! Other amazing songs in this style are "Look of Love" and a cover of The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" by Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, and "Summer Samba" by Astrud Gilberto!

This song was a huge world wide smash in the early sixties. Stan Getz was one of the all time great sax players. Astrid' s husband was on guitar ( I'm sorry, I forget his first name) and was making a record with Stan. Astrid wasn't a professional singer and her appearance here was totally unplanned. For whatever reason, they asked her to step up to the Mike and musical history was made. Try listening to more Stan Getz. You won't be disappointed.

Finally, she commented on the lyrics! And story. This is called bossa nova music, from Brazil. Her voice is heaven. Simple, no coloratura or over-souling. The beach is in Rio. It's amazing how few references you have but yours is an effective platform for spreading music to your generation, if not adjectives.

Hey guys! Ahhh, sweet bossa nova perfection! This is sublime. Bossa Nova music, in general, transports you into another world. This version is an abbreviated version of the full song, but you still get full bossa nova vibes. Astrud's then husband, João Gilberto (who was a famous singer in Brazil at the time) also covered this song in Portuguese. But Astrud's version is *the* classic version. The song has also been gender changed, as there are versions of "The Boy From Ipanema", too. Most notably by Peggy Lee. As a follow-up, I highly suggest you continue your 'bossa' journey with another song from Astrud Gilberto from this same time, "Água de Beber". It's so good!

Also, since you are branching out past Rock 'n Roll, try album "Getz Gilberto", cut 3 "Para Machuchar Meu Coracao", absolutely gorgeous & Stan makes it happen. Yeah, Joao is singing in Portugese, but you will get the hang of it.
