Doom8088 needs a VGA or MCGA card and a Compaq Portable II has a CGA card, right? So that won't work. However, doomtd3 will run if there's enough memory in the Compaq Portable II. Doom8088 CGA support is on the To-Do list.
If you set up an old device, the IDE compatible CF card turns on its coprocessor to speed up the system. Doom demo screen, the intro turns it on after 20-30 watches, the computer will be faster if the cf card is in. Does not work with microdrive, it does not have a coprocessor. Old 256 mb card is good for the extra speed. Causes very fast file execution, copying.
I've tried using a CF card in this 386 computer, but it gave an error during POST. Then I thought "Why not use a RAM drive?" and then I thought "Why not build-in RAM drive support into the game" and that's how the XMS feature got started.
Not on a 386sx20. Such a CPU runs standard doom around 1-2 fps, completely unplable. You can run fast doom on a 386 like this but it looks about the same if not worse (does have soundcard support though). This: th-cam.com/video/KEhIwLZ06dc/w-d-xo.html shows the performance of this port at lowest settings on an emulated 286, its amazing that it cann run at all on such a CPU.

The performance is really good! Also interesting idea caching all the WAD on memory, maybe I can do something similar in FastDoom.

if he played like that on i286, then good. and on 386, regular Doom runs just the same, and with better graphics, and not so sloppy.

This 386 is the slowest computer I have that has a VGA card.
