I'm a little late to this Amstrad PCW party, but thank you so much for this video. Finally, someone else who has fond memories of the 8256! It was the successor to the Speccy in our house - a shame about the lack of colour, but I loved it nonetheless. The endless hours spent messing around in CP/M and Mallard BASIC. We were big fans of the Microdesign suite of software (MicroDesign, ProSCAN and Tweak) which meant we could do pretty advanced desktop publishing for back in the day. I remember typing out a Pirate-themed text adventure BASIC listing from a magazine and using the GSX extensions from Mallard BASIC to add in illustrations I'd scanned from pirate books from the local library using ProSCAN! This sated my programming appetite until my Amiga A500 arrived a few years later.

The graphics and performance on some of those games are pretty impressive for a word processor from 1985 that wasn't meant to run graphical games. Pacmania looks a little slow, but it's amazing it runs at all on a machine like that and it's definitely playable.

Brought back some memories!! ;) my dad also had a PCW in his office, and I used to play some games on it when he was off, "Livingstone", "Sol negro" etc...didn't know about the "Starglider" version till now!! looks really superb for the machine it was, graphically nothing to envy to the ST version BTW, well...almost. LOL

Hi guys, stumbled across your channel a couple of days ago and became heavily nostalgic after watching some of your videos ..all that beautiful equipment from the days of my youth ! :o)
    - Ended up with a beautiful "like new" Amstrad PCW 8512 from an ebay auction where I spotted it accidentally..."Boxed, New old stock", everything untouched, amazing !!!
..looks like I have to come by from time to time...!

OMG! Just found your channel and was taken back to the late 80s by this video. I had this model as well. I remember using Locoscript for a newsletter I ran. As well as playing Starglider and Batman. Thank you. I may have to see if I can find a used one!!

This is why my computer has a lot of screws rattling around when I move it.

I used to help my friend re standing in for him when he with his family took a holiday. He ran a retail store and did his accounts on the PCW (dual disk) The reason for that was his accountant had the same machine so it was good for him to do his accounts on it and then pass the disk to the accountant for finalising. I was used to pcs having been building pcs from the motherboard soldering of components, ultrasonic cleaning with chemicals plus of course the final assemblies for a company who built pcs for Reuters (Int News Agency) Late 70s + My wife was also a COBOL programmer working for a huge logistics company as a programmer/supervisor/trainer so we had various machines at home for her work incl of course data backups et Thus this Amstrad PCW was a breeze to use and though the green screen could be irritating ☺it did its job really well. Totally impressed.

Having had a green screen 464 I did appreciate the difference to a colour system. I really did grow to love it. Like with the Speccy I'd had before I enjoyed the quirks of colour clash and it's limited but distinctive palette so it doesn't take long until you appreciate a green screen too and it's uniqueness. You both make a great team.
