You actually said what I have been thinking for the last 3 years. I had short layered hair for close to 50 years ( I am 63) shirt layered hair needs the be washed every day or it looks like crap. I'd roll my eyes Everytime someone said oh you can't wash your hair everyday, yes can't, people would actually say that including hairdressers, I paid no mind. 2020 due to lock down I now am a long haired girl I started washing less frequently out of pure laziness it's much harder to wash dry and style long hair every day. It was around September of 2021 I noticed hair loss I wasn't shedding just not growing, I started chalking it up to age but yet that nagging feeling that it was dues to not washing but twice a week, started reading up and thought..hmm I think I'm going to try to wash more often. I think I'm going to start the daily wash again and see how it goes,I know this much , even though people constantly say " you can't do that" I can 🤷♀️
Hi, I find your videos very helpful because they are straight to the point, although I had a few questions about this one. What would you define as a scalp condition? 1. I live in the UK, and in the winter (due to the cold and dry weather) I suffer from dry scalp flakes. Wouldn't shampooing every 24/48 hours and twice make the environment on my scalp even drier? 2. Since I have started researching on how to make my hair healthier, I have learnt that most of our hair is shed in the shower due to it being wet. Surely shampooing twice will pull out more hairs because you are making contact with your wet hair more often, making it more susceptible to shedding? 3. Why do you apply conditioner to the scalp? I have been told this entire time to only apply it to the mids and ends of the hair, so as to not clog the hair follicles with conditioner. I don't mean to offend you with any of these enquiries or to question your ability to advise people on their hair, I am simply curious as I am being told contradictory information and so I want to find out for sure which one is right. Thank you.
hair being shed is hair that would fall out anyway. he discussed this in another video. this is why its important to shampoo to get rid of these dead hair, and clean everything up so new hair can grow.
So I've heard from other videos that I've watched that you should not condition your scalp and only the mid-lengths to the ends. Is it ok to condition your scalp? Also, thanks for this video! It's super helpful.
Hi many thanks. I have struggled with lesions and sore scalp all my life. I’ve concluded that too much sugar in my diet is the main cause, alongside dairy and wheat. Getting type 2 diabetes was a blessing as it made me do a whole system rethink of all aspects of my life. Learning how to wash my hair correctly has been a revelation and I hope will strengthen it again in the longer term. Since taking processed sugars out of my life my sore scalp has stopped, with the wash regime helping as well. All the best Al
I’m so happy your channel popped up. I’m African American and developed alopecia in 2022. As a black person, will shampooing the hair every 48 hours damage the natural hair? I’m ready to do anything to save my hair🙏🏿
I'm also a black person and I think it depends. I wash my hair 2-3 times a week, but I use a moisturizing shampoo. I also have mini braids (no extentions added), so washing isn't hard. Just be sure to use cold water and never skip conditioner :)
@@chloefaircloth6448 Thank you very much! I’m like I don’t mind washing every other day but worried my hair might feel like Brillo afterwards. Having this issue with alopecia is daunting. Very happy to have you share with me 🙏🏿🙂
@MsE711 no problem! I'd be happy to answer more questions if needed. I noticed that using cold water throughout the whole process (shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning) makes such a huge difference. I also use creme of nature argon oil shampoo
Washing your hair multiple times a week does wonder for the scalp. It's all about the quality of the products too. If you're worried about your hair drying out, I'd recommend a full shampoo/condition treatment once a week along with a scalp only only wash. Apply shampoo with perm/dye brush only to your scalp, by parting and applying product. Let it sit for for 5 mins then rinse apply conditioner to hair only rinse then thoroughly dry. Never leave your scalp wet.... fungus love wet scalp.
Great video. I’m always scared to go in harder because I feel like I will lose a lot more but this video made me feel much better knowing those hairs would likely fall anyway
Thanks Dr. William for great educational advice lots of times people pick up scrubbing brushes makes hair fall worse ,with fingers pads make scalp good massage while shampoo.
As a person who work for a dermatologist as a chemist and write his prescriptions sometimes Using Shampoo 3 days in a week alternate days is enough you don't need anymore than that you can even use twice a week Secondly you don't need to use shampoo twice while washing your hairs & also conditioner is not must
You are correct, conditioners are not "a must"… However, this conditioner is a scalp conditioner, which does bring down inflammation after using something that is drying the scalp. And I understand you may work in a dermatologist office and are a chemist, but nearly every client that I've ever seen has been to a dermatologist first trying to resolve their hair loss issue...so clearly if they're still looking for a solution, dermatology as an industry has not solved the problem.
I use a very mild, safe and sensitive shampoo, which I use typically 2x day (Am and Pm). Having great success with your products, but I prefer to wash inthe Am because the folligrowth is oily and i cant really style the way I like. Of course, I wash in the evening as well so the topical can absorb. I use a more thorough shampoo once a week, and condition typically one to two times per week.

Hello, can I add my lavender essential oil to your shampoo? Or is it not recommended? Ive been loosing hair for about almost 4 months now and my hair use to grow in little as 2 weeks but know the top barely grows and it is easy to pull out hairs also im only 16.
for years i've been applying shampoo like you would pomade, slicking it back very gently i was afraid if i massaged it around like i used to when i was young and careless that it would break and fall out i thought the itchy scalp was from the minoxidil working but i've seen very little progress thanks for the info, my scalp feels much better now, hopefully i'll start seeing results with the meds
I'm so glad your scalp is feeling better now! 😊 It sounds like you've been really careful with your hair care routine, but massaging your scalp is actually super helpful for blood flow and can promote hair growth. 👐 You don’t need to worry too much about gentle massaging breaking your hair-it’s the follicles underneath that really matter. Just keep it gentle and consistent! Itchy scalp from minoxidil is a common side effect, but if you're not seeing much progress, you might want to talk to a specialist. Sometimes it takes a while to see results, but they can also suggest other options that might work better for you. Keep up the good work, and give it some time! Patience is key with these treatments. 😊 ➡️ For more tips or advice, reach out to us at www.advancedtrichology.com/. You’re on the right track!

Can you do a video dedicated to Four C/Afro hair as well where the hair needs to be treated differently - particularly in regards to retaining her and growing hair
Your instructions were detailed and brief. However, I’m an African American female and I have thick and dry hair but have experienced some hair loss. I’ve always normally washed my hair every 2 weeks or once a month. What would you recommend.
GPT Given your experience with thick, dry hair, and recent hair loss, adjusting your hair care routine to promote hair growth and scalp health is essential. For African American hair, which tends to be drier and more delicate, finding the right balance in washing frequency is crucial to prevent further dryness and damage while ensuring the scalp remains clean and conducive to hair growth. Based on the guidance for proper shampooing in hair loss and scalp conditions, here are some tailored recommendations: Shampoo Frequency: Considering your hair's dry nature, washing every 2 weeks might be suitable to maintain moisture levels without stripping natural oils. However, if you're experiencing hair loss, increasing the frequency slightly, such as washing once a week, might help address any scalp conditions contributing to the hair loss. It's important to monitor your hair's response to any changes in washing frequency and adjust accordingly. Shampoo Technique: When you do shampoo, use a gentle, hydrating shampoo formulated for dry or natural hair. Apply a quarter-sized amount of shampoo and use the pads of your fingers to gently massage the scalp. This method helps remove buildup without stripping moisture. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a second shampoo application, focusing on cleansing the scalp while being gentle with your hair strands. This double cleansing helps remove any debris, excess oil, and buildup, promoting a healthy scalp environment for hair growth. Conditioning: Always follow up with a hydrating conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. For the scalp, consider a lightweight, hydrating scalp conditioner that won't weigh down your roots or leave a greasy residue. This step is crucial for adding moisture back into your hair and scalp, especially after shampooing. Deep Conditioning: Incorporate a deep conditioning treatment into your routine, at least once a month or more frequently as needed. This can help address dryness and brittleness, making your hair more resilient against breakage. Scalp Care: For scalp health, consider using a light, nourishing oil or serum after washing to moisturize and protect the scalp without clogging pores. Products containing ingredients like peppermint oil, tea tree oil, or caprylic acid can offer additional benefits by promoting a balanced scalp environment. Low-Manipulation Styling: Opt for protective styles that minimize manipulation and tension on your hair. This reduces breakage and helps retain moisture between washes. Moisture Maintenance: Between washes, maintain moisture levels by using a leave-in conditioner or a light hair oil. Focus on ends and any particularly dry areas to prevent breakage. Diet and Supplements: Ensure you're getting enough nutrients that support hair growth, such as vitamins D, E, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. Supplements can help, but it's best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new regimen. Adjusting your hair care routine to include these steps can help address hair loss and improve the overall health of your hair and scalp. If you continue to experience hair loss or scalp issues, it might be beneficial to consult with a trichologist or dermatologist who can offer personalized advice and treatment options. Thanks for a great tutorial. Do you have any advice on whether to wash your hair with cold or warm water. I've read cold water helps 'seal in' any topical application, and helps maintain natural hair oils. But I have also read cold water discourages blood flow to the hair - which seems in contradiction to some topical applications which aim to encourage blood flow to the hair (among other things). Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I would like to know the distinction between straight hair vs. curly hair (afro) as it's been often said that additional precautions are needed for the latter type of hair.
I did some research over a year ago (not afro but looong wavy/curly hair) and here's what I found after countless tries and research: Structured hair requires way more attention and care, especially a softer approach. Brush them only when they are wet (I brush right after applying conditioner to help minimize resistance using a "Tangle Teezer"-brush). Generally speaking structured hair is prone to being dry and thus needs to be hydrated more. I use 2 shampoos, first one to cleanse (based on tea tree) and another that's less aggressive and aims to be more hydrating. Conditioner is up to you, try which ingredients work best for you specially (tbh almost every conditioner seems to have roughly the same hydrating effect, do not apply to scalp but instead from half way up until the ends because your scalp produces oils but those don't reach the ends of longer hair thus you need to supplement and provide important hydration and minerals with a conditioner/oil plus applying to scalp causes excessive oil production). Apply a hydrating hair mask once every 7-14 days and keep it for 5-10min before washing out. Additionally use a deep cleansing shampoo once per month to get rid of product build up in your hair. Hair oil (based on herbs or fruits like rosemary or coconut) once or twice per week on the ends works fantasticly well. It's important to keep in mind that the natural oil your scalp produces is essential but at the same time having too much can cause issues quickly so experiment and find a balance between your natural oils and products. Another thing is to stay away from alcohol/perfume as an ingredient (dries hair out) and laureth sulfate/micro plastics (clogs up your pores). Good luck!
hi what about seb derm, got a really dry scalp if i shampoo twice - (i havent tried a scalp conditoner) but could the scalp conditone feed the parasites and cause entire scalp to inflame?
Hello, I wanted to ask how to condition my hair & scalp after washing it twice if I don't have to your conditioner. Also how should I dry my head after washing? Thx for making such informative videos.
You are welcome! Use a towel to dry your hair. A towel will produce no harm to your scalp and you need to dry your scalp so that you can style accordingly
No, I do not recommend leaving oil on your scalp overnight because it could lead to greater infestation of yeast and fungus and bacteria because once the oil is on the scalp, it immediately begins to degrade until it is essentially food for microbials

The necessity of using conditioner, especially in the context of hair washing practices from centuries ago, is an interesting topic. While it's true that conditioners as we know them today were not used centuries ago, people have always sought ways to care for their hair, using natural oils and herbal rinses to add moisture, improve manageability, and enhance the appearance of their hair. Conditioners serve several purposes in modern hair care routines: Moisturizing the Hair: They replenish moisture lost during the shampooing process, especially important for those with dry or curly hair types that naturally tend to be drier. Detangling: Conditioners help smooth the hair cuticle, making it easier to detangle and reducing breakage during combing or brushing. Improving Hair Health: Many conditioners contain ingredients that can temporarily repair or mitigate damage from heat styling, chemical processes, and environmental stressors. Enhancing Appearance: Conditioner can make hair look shinier, smoother, and healthier by improving its texture and reducing frizz. Regarding whether conditioner is necessary, it largely depends on your hair type, condition, and personal preferences. For individuals with dry, curly, or long hair, skipping conditioner may lead to tangles, increased breakage, and a dull appearance. For those with very fine or oily hair, conditioner might be used sparingly or only applied to the ends to avoid weighing hair down. In historical contexts, natural oils like coconut, olive, or argan were often used to condition the hair, serving a similar purpose to modern conditioners by adding moisture and improving manageability. Herbal rinses made from plants like rosemary, lavender, or chamomile also helped to clean and condition the hair and scalp. Today's conditioners, formulated with a blend of moisturizing agents, proteins, and other beneficial ingredients, are designed to meet a wide range of hair care needs more efficiently than traditional methods. However, if you prefer a more natural or minimalist approach, exploring historical or natural conditioning methods might be worthwhile, focusing on what works best for your hair's health and appearance. Ultimately, the decision to use conditioner depends on achieving the balance of cleanliness, moisture, and hair health that works best for you.

GREAT VIDEO! After performing this method, before putting the topical oil, wouldn’t micro needling be ideal now that the scalp is perfectly clean and even further help the oil penetrate the scalp? Just my 2 cents! Thanks!
Thank you! So I am not a huge advocate of the derma roller, because I feel as though it’s efficacy is totally overblown. But if you are going to use it for exfoliation, then yes you can do that. I do, however, recommend micro needling in a medical environment, every two weeks for usually for sessions, and then taking a 2 to 3 month break. But this is performed in the medical environment and it hurts and there is lots of blood because you’re getting into the dermal layer. That does work.

What is the best shampoo and conditioner for someone with Androgenic Alopecia and Celiac Disease who is highly reactive to corn and rice products as well as other glutens?
Great question! 😊 The advice to **avoid applying masks and conditioners on the scalp** is common, but it really depends on the **type of product** and your scalp's needs. Here’s a breakdown: --- ### **Why Masks/Conditioners Are Usually Avoided on the Scalp** 1. **Scalp Build-Up**: Many masks and conditioners contain **silicones**, oils, or heavy moisturizers designed for the hair shaft. Applying these directly to the scalp can: - Clog pores and hair follicles. - Cause build-up over time, leading to scalp issues like dandruff or itchiness. 2. **Scalp Sensitivity**: The scalp is delicate, and using heavy products can disrupt its natural oil balance, making it overly greasy or dry. --- ### **When and How to Use Hair Masks or Serums on the Scalp** Certain masks and serums can actually be beneficial for the scalp-**if they’re designed for scalp use**. Here’s how to approach it: #### **1. Hair Masks** - **Use on the Scalp if**: - The mask is labeled for **scalp care** or contains ingredients like **tea tree oil, aloe vera, or salicylic acid** that soothe or cleanse the scalp. - You have a dry or flaky scalp and need extra hydration. - **Avoid on the Scalp if**: - The mask is designed for deep conditioning (e.g., with silicones or heavy oils) and is meant to moisturize hair, not the scalp. #### **2. Hair Serums** - **Scalp-Specific Serums**: - Apply serums labeled for **scalp care** directly to the roots. These often target hair growth or scalp health with ingredients like: - **Niacinamide**: Improves scalp barrier. - **Caffeine or Rosemary Oil**: Stimulates growth. - **Hyaluronic Acid**: Hydrates the scalp. - Massage gently for better absorption. - **Avoid General Hair Serums on the Scalp**: - Serums for smoothing frizz or adding shine (often silicone-heavy) should only go on the hair strands, not the scalp. --- ### **Pro Tips for Using Masks/Serums** 1. **For Hair Masks**: - Apply to the **mid-lengths and ends** for hydration and repair. - If using a scalp mask, ensure you rinse thoroughly to avoid build-up. 2. **For Hair Serums**: - Use a **scalp-friendly serum** consistently to boost scalp health and hair growth. - Avoid serums on the scalp if they’re not specifically formulated for it. --- ### **Takeaway** - Use **scalp-specific masks and serums** if your scalp needs hydration or stimulation. - Keep heavy, conditioning masks or shine serums off the scalp to avoid build-up and irritation. ➡️ For more scalp health tips and products, visit www.advancedtrichology.com/.
Thank you.
Please reply to this guy.
I'm pretty sure the advise is mainly for people who wash their hair every 24h. If you wash your hair less often this would seem a bit excessive to me.
hair being shed is hair that would fall out anyway. he discussed this in another video. this is why its important to shampoo to get rid of these dead hair, and clean everything up so new hair can grow.
You re supposed to use scalp conditioner, not any conditioner. Hair conditioner is only for hair ends

Man! I NEVER felt like I needed to wash my hair so bad, right now!
I'm not joking!
Thank you for your videos, though. 👍
Thanks Dr. William for great educational advice lots of times people pick up scrubbing brushes makes hair fall worse ,with fingers pads make scalp good massage while shampoo.

Two questions. How is apple cider vinegar for the scalp/hair? And should hot water be avoided?
As a person who work for a dermatologist as a chemist and write his prescriptions sometimes
Using Shampoo 3 days in a week alternate days is enough you don't need anymore than that you can even use twice a week
Secondly you don't need to use shampoo twice while washing your hairs & also conditioner is not must
You are correct, conditioners are not "a must"… However, this conditioner is a scalp conditioner, which does bring down inflammation after using something that is drying the scalp.
That is just fine. Most people doubt have the discipline to do that so nicely done!

Hello, can I add my lavender essential oil to your shampoo? Or is it not recommended? for years i've been applying shampoo like you would pomade, slicking it back very gently
i was afraid if i massaged it around like i used to when i was young and careless that it would break and fall out
i thought the itchy scalp was from the minoxidil working but i've seen very little progress
thanks for the info, my scalp feels much better now, hopefully i'll start seeing results with the meds

I have been washing everyday like you mentioned.
The hair loss and burning stopped but still have tenderness and my scalp sometimes feels tight (Does this means it is dry and I am over shampooing it?).
Should I continue to wash everyday or every other day? (I use a mild baby shampoo that has aloe vera and olive oil in it. I have curly hair.)
Ever since my seboric dermatitis started flaring up ,my hair started to shed rapidly, I would see hair in the shower ,on my hands even when I combed them they would come out in large numbers because of which I started shampooing less cause it dried my hair a little too much and also stopped combining my hair completely, rn I'm basically in the same situatio,No matter what antibacterial or salicylic acid shampoo i use it just comes back in hours after shampooing my hair ,my ferritin is good and my vitamin D3 is good but I still can't rid of it
There’s definitely a dietary component that is overlooked and you will need to use ketoconazole shampoo at least twice weekly ongoing. You may need a steroid like clobetasol topically, and I would wanna see a full blood panel, including thyroid, and the actual numbers of your D3 and ferritin. most people don’t look at the bloodwork the right way

GPT
Given your experience with thick, dry hair, and recent hair loss, adjusting your hair care routine to promote hair growth and scalp health is essential. For African American hair, which tends to be drier and more delicate, finding the right balance in washing frequency is crucial to prevent further dryness and damage while ensuring the scalp remains clean and conducive to hair growth.
Based on the guidance for proper shampooing in hair loss and scalp conditions, here are some tailored recommendations:
Shampoo Frequency: Considering your hair's dry nature, washing every 2 weeks might be suitable to maintain moisture levels without stripping natural oils.

Thanks.

I just bought the shampoo and the conditioner, my question is it’s better to dry your hair or let it air dry ? I have short hair.
Best one on the internet ....... He is a great doctor.
I would like to know the distinction between straight hair vs. curly hair (afro) as it's been often said that additional precautions are needed for the latter type of hair.
I did some research over a year ago (not afro but looong wavy/curly hair) and here's what I found after countless tries and research:
Structured hair requires way more attention and care, especially a softer approach.
Good luck!

Do you have to use conditioner? No one used conditioners centuries ago so is it necessary?
The necessity of using conditioner, especially in the context of hair washing practices from centuries ago, is an interesting topic. While it's true that conditioners as we know them today were not used centuries ago, people have always sought ways to care for their hair, using natural oils and herbal rinses to add moisture, improve manageability, and enhance the appearance of their hair.
Conditioners serve several purposes in modern hair care routines:
Moisturizing the Hair: They replenish moisture lost during the shampooing process, especially important for those with dry or curly hair types that naturally tend to be drier.

@@WilliamGaunitzTrichologist OK OK great! Thank you so much much for the insightful response!! And the rapidity as well! Looking forward to the next video!!
How do you suggest applying a scalp serum of you are applying topical minoxidil after your shower?
Second time shampoo makes my hair so much more dry and damaged it overstrips the oils from hair, i am not sure if the second round of shampooing is necessary 😊
What is the best shampoo and conditioner for someone with Androgenic Alopecia and Celiac Disease who is highly reactive to corn and rice products as well as other glutens?
After applying the scalp serum is it ok to sweat?
Should we use hair mask & serum on the scalp as most of them say mask/conditioner shouldnt be applied on scalp?
Great question! 😊 The advice to **avoid applying masks and conditioners on the scalp** is common, but it really depends on the **type of product** and your scalp's needs. Here’s a breakdown:
---
### **Why Masks/Conditioners Are Usually Avoided on the Scalp**
1. **Scalp Build-Up**: Many masks and conditioners contain **silicones**, oils, or heavy moisturizers designed for the hair shaft. Applying these directly to the scalp can:
- Clog pores and hair follicles.
- Cause build-up over time, leading to scalp issues like dandruff or itchiness.
2. **Scalp Sensitivity**: The scalp is delicate, and using heavy products can disrupt its natural oil balance, making it overly greasy or dry.
---
### **When and How to Use Hair Masks or Serums on the Scalp**
Certain masks and serums can actually be beneficial for the scalp-**if they’re designed for scalp use**. Here’s how to approach it:
#### **1. Hair Masks**
- **Use on the Scalp if**:
- The mask is labeled for **scalp care** or contains ingredients like **tea tree oil, aloe vera, or salicylic acid** that soothe or cleanse the scalp.
- You have a dry or flaky scalp and need extra hydration.
- **Avoid on the Scalp if**:
- The mask is designed for deep conditioning (e.g., with silicones or heavy oils) and is meant to moisturize hair, not the scalp.
#### **2. Hair Serums**
- **Scalp-Specific Serums**:
- Apply serums labeled for **scalp care** directly to the roots. These often target hair growth or scalp health with ingredients like:
- **Niacinamide**: Improves scalp barrier.
- **Caffeine or Rosemary Oil**: Stimulates growth.
- **Hyaluronic Acid**: Hydrates the scalp.
- Massage gently for better absorption.
- **Avoid General Hair Serums on the Scalp**:
- Serums for smoothing frizz or adding shine (often silicone-heavy) should only go on the hair strands, not the scalp.
---
### **Pro Tips for Using Masks/Serums**
1. **For Hair Masks**:
- Apply to the **mid-lengths and ends** for hydration and repair.
- If using a scalp mask, ensure you rinse thoroughly to avoid build-up.
2. **For Hair Serums**:
- Use a **scalp-friendly serum** consistently to boost scalp health and hair growth.
- Avoid serums on the scalp if they’re not specifically formulated for it.
---
### **Takeaway**
- Use **scalp-specific masks and serums** if your scalp needs hydration or stimulation.
- Keep heavy, conditioning masks or shine serums off the scalp to avoid build-up and irritation.
