    Do I have any reason to watch these videos? Also, no.
    Do I pay substantially more attention to Nate and his teachings than any college class I have ever been in? Yes.

    I know that digital dermatitis is very contagious between cows, so after you've touched it with your knife (as you did in this vid) do you then get a clean knife to trim the rest of the herd or just disinfect the one you're using?

    I watch several of these hoof trimming channels and while I choose to abstain from claiming, who is the best, because I'm simply a layman when it comes to these matters, Nate is far and away my absolute favorite! I love his calm and informative explanations and his knife work is head and shoulders above any of the others in my humble opinion. Nate really seems to care about the comfort of the cows he works on and it appears that he truly enjoys his work.

    Not sure why this channel originally popped up for me, but I'm really glad it did. As many have already commented, this profession is absolutely fascinating. So multi-faceted it's an art form. Oh, I've been around cows several times, horses many times and I've see them shoed. Never saw anything where a farrier was dealing with serious issues. An experienced farrier is certainly worth their weight in gold. Being able to help these animals back to health and comfort must be tremendously fulfilling. Horses, cows, what else would be in the mix? Reminds me of an old (very much ex) girlfriend at the nail salon that I went with 1 time. Seriously, have you ever had a situation you felt really challenged by?

    • @bigburkhart2293
      @bigburkhart2293 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      When they're used to getting handled and worked with, they learn that being put in places like that aren't dangerous, so they stay calm. It's the farmer's job to work with the animals and keep them tame. Plus, these are dairy cattle. The crush isn't that different from the milker they go through every day.

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@emreacar9434 6:33 The white powder is salicylic acid. He then wraps it tightly to the hoof. The time stamp is when he says what it is.
      As for the blue liquid he sprays I'm guessing it's a type of disinfectant or spray that's safe to get into the hoof. Other channels use the same type of spray. Others ALSO use iodine as well (sometimes in place of the salicylic acid, sometimes in addition to). The other channel I'm referring to is the Scottish guy, it's called That Hood GP or something. This guy and that channel are the 2 I have been watching lately.

    I was kinda hoping that you would give a complete answer to “what would happen in the wild” question-“well, assuming that her lameness didn’t single her out for predators, the problem would resolve itself and she’d shed that detached hoof.” We seem to have a problem admitting to ourselves that the reason wild animals have fewer health issues than domesticated animals is because problematic animals tend to get eaten more than healthy animals do.
    If we’re going to intervene in their life cycles this dramatically, we owe it to them to take care of them to the best of our ability.

    2:40 with the muck on the outside of the hoof and the white of the cut hoof, it almost reminds me of a slice of coconut

    Nate, you’ve described the knives you use getting progressively thinner and sharper as you use them, but when do you know it’s time to retire said knife for a new one? When it gets to the point where the blade is so thin it’s about to snap?

    Before computers were popular farmers experienced only dermatitis. Since the technology boom the past 25 years we mainly see only digital dermatitis. The more you know!

    Love these videos. Would love to know how to apply these lessons to trimming my sheep’s feet. I’m in Oklahoma, but there doesn’t seem to be any vets who know sheep or anyone who does feet well!

    I'm calling it a boo boo, I'd treat it with some bactine, And wrap it with some celestic acid, Benzo carbonate With a spoonful of sugar. To help the medicine go down.😮 Awesome job, Nate doggie dog.

      Salicylic acid. It's aspirin's first cousin. Anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and anti-microbial.

    I'm not sure if maybe I just missed you saying something in a previous video, but I was wondering. Now that it's been several months since you switched to the more abrasive grinder, have you noticed any better block retention?

    I watch Nate and the hoof gp, both very different methods but both fascinating and educational. Do I have cows? Nope, have I ever had cows? Nope Do i love cows? Yup.
    I did work on a cattle farm one summer when I was young in the 1980s, I got paid in whatever eggs I collected on the day and I got to help with the calves, they're adorable.

    Fascinating, never realized how much abuse a cows hoof will take. For some strange reason I like watching him repair them and help the heffers out!
