    I’ve gotta say, what Gary said here is basically my life. Went into corporate, hit that bamboo ceiling. Had people steal my work and ideas, was never a self promoter, and then decided to work for myself. Best decision ever. If you’ve got the talent and you can build, go do it. Stop wasting time playing office politics. And truth be told, working in america or overseas, asians are looked at as non top management material. You’ve really got to be “white” culturally to even get along with top management and even then you can still feel some kind of difference because you’re asian, at least that was my experience. 90% of the people in top management were white and male. So meh, no office politics for me. Go build my own building. And that whole banana thing. My god I feel Gary, definitely don’t want to be a banana. Now I’m just me, an alien in this world. Working across continents and mixing in different languages and cultures. 👽

      I don't want to discount your experience entirely, however have you tried considering that perhaps it is your perception only that makes you feel this way? Maybe you're projecting your own feelings towards other cultures and mirroring this back onto yourself? My experience in North America has been very positive in terms of racial and cultural inclusion, if not the most inclusive place on earth. After all, if you were to work in China or Japan you would find yourself in an extremely exclusive work environment typically 100% homogenous both "racially" (not a fan of this term) and culturally.

    • @Designalily
      @Designalily 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's definitely not his perception. Upper management is culturally "white" in America, look at who's statistically the majority.

    Wow, I had never heard of the Gervais Principle, but being enlightened to it now, it almost immediately made my extremely weird career trajectory make so much sense. I basically spent two years underperforming and driven mad as a "loser" in a successful unicorn, lost the plot at one point and just upped and left. Immediately fell into the startup space and was groomed by "sociopaths" to senior management level at a breakneck pace that even now is a bit difficult for me to comprehend the speed at which it happened. The momentum just never stopped but at least I know why now...

    Bamboo ceiling is the reason my cousin and friends move to Hong Kong or Singapore from Australia. One of them was pulled aside by well meaning manager and told she doesn’t fit culturally despite being fantastic staff, she doesn’t drink, chit chat after working hours or hanging out in pubs every Friday. You can go build your own ladder in private sector no prob , however imagine public sector ran by same mob who dismiss you and pass laws that only benefit their folks because rest of us can’t be bothered to fight it. Great content Gary, you earn a new sub!

    • @billaddison82
      @billaddison82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your friend will probably encounter the same problem in Hong Kong and Singapore. It is common for colleagues to socialise after work in these cities too. I think the drinking part is really optional and obviously not for everyone, however it is always a good idea to engage with colleagues socially to build a sense of team and bring more meaning to your work life.

    • @Hendra23155

      @@billaddison82 She still lives in HK til this day. I should have elaborated by culturally fit in Australia (in my friend's corporate experience at least): dressing up for Melbourne cup day, interested in Cricket, AFL, Friday night drink etc. Of course none of this mentioned openly, none forced her and she was treated with respect hence she was grateful being pulled aside and told the truth. It irks her spectacular job performance isn't a guarantee to move to management circle.

    • @billaddison82
      @billaddison82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hendra23155 I totally understand. I have a female friend who is a person of colour who experienced the same issue in China, though a lot worse. They were extremely racist towards her and sexist due to her high-performance in the corporate workplace. She was able to work very hard to assimilate, as much as one can in such a homogenous country such as China, by learning the language, following the customs, sports etc. and trying to fit in as best she could despite the incessant racism she suffered daily in China.

    As an Asian guy who spent years excelling in all of my jobs, I can attest to this bamboo ceiling. Multiple times, I am the top performer in all metrics, hold the most valuable knowledge of the company, and put in more work than anyone else. Yet everytime a promotion opportunity comes up, the least experienced person gets promoted because it was a girl the manager liked or was friends with. These employers always wondered why I left.

Also, it's definitely good to have some perspective about the realistic outcomes from pursuing entrepeneurship. I think some of us that have tried know of the trials and trepedations that come along with paving your own path.

    The necessity for self promotion and subsequent stack ranking based on that is a very American thing which doesn’t translate to most other cultures in the world, not just East Asian. It’s seen as not genuine, cut throat, and toxic. In most European cultures we’re brought up to value humility and support those in need or with less power, for example.
