- 2022 Yamaha R7 Oil Change, I'm so excited to have the bike broke in and ready to ride. Still gotta adjust and clean the chain but here we go!!! Here is a list of tools to complete the job with some extras to make you life easier.
THE MANUAL IS INCORRECT FOR OIL DRAIN TORQUE use 17 ft lb not 32 it has been stripping out peoples case.
-17mm Wrench, 10mm Wrench, 4mm Allen key, Phillips #2 screw driver and oil filter wrench.
-I strongly recommend using a torque wrench and an awl for the plastic fittings.

Love all your videos. They’ve been super informative so far. Would love to see a video on how to perform the first service on the bike to save some cash from taking it to the dealership! I’ve seen those prices anywhere from $275-$400 for what I hear people calling a “glorified oil change.” Thoughts?
My thoughts are the first service is bs if you know what could fail, as far as saving warranty and people being new to maintenance I would suggest paying for the first service as the warranty’s on bikes are usually only a year anyway and you would not want them to turn you down on a warranty issue in the first year, hopefully this is helpful

Nice vid👍🏿It’s definitely a lot cheaper on your own rather than asking the dealers for help, it looks pretty hard to do it on your own though.
Yea, it’s much easier if you don’t have to remove fairings. No shame in getting the dealer to do it either just want people to see what they are getting into, thanks and cheers!!
dont be afraid to try it. I started with basics like oil changes, brake pads, brake fluid, spark plugs and have done even valve clearance adjustments (shim replacement) within the first 2 years of riding. it's easy after the first time and you get familiar with your bike doing it. next i'm thinking to swap fork springs with cartridges and the rear shock.
you will need to buy tools but its still cheaper than paying a mechanic. with proper instructions (service manual) you can do pretty much anything.

Hey man I’ve had an r7 now for about 2 months and was wondering if you could help me out with a few things? I plan on doing an oil change, chain adjustments, those halo flush lights, aftermarket windscreen, and maybe more stuff from what you’ve done to yours lol😂. Anyways I was hoping you can help me on what I should buy as far as tools go to be able to do all this maintenance and or parts. Maybe there’s a pack that includes everything I need besides maybe a torque wrench?

Really debating whether or not to use mineral or full synthetic oil...I see you’re using regular mineral oil but for someone who plans to have the bike long term what do you recommend?
I’ve learned in the past fixing vehicles that oem parts are always a good idea. But yes synthetic is always better as it just doesn’t breakdown like regular oil does. I think if you stay up on the changes you will be fine if you are lazy about doing the change on time synthetic is a safer bet

😆 that little guy is so funny-->🙋🏻♂️😳. I believe it’s just under the fuel tank, but when I can finally buy an exhaust I’ll be installing a filter too, I believe you can get at it without taking off the tank with the side plastics just not 100% sure yet.

I had few issues today. Couldn't get the filter off, so I'll probably have to get a wrench like yours I'm assuming. And then Secondly the bottom right bolt for the bottom fairing (the one you said is a lil pain), I couldn't for the life of me get it to thread properly. It keeps going at an angle and so there's a bit of a gap because it's not closing all the way. It's tight, so no wiggle. But fml, any suggestions? The washer keeps popping out the grommet as I'm threading it and it just ends up going slightly crooked. I'm just like ahhhh. And the top left nut on the bottom fairing wasn't even on there lol so whoever installed it forgot that piece lol. I'm assuming any normal nut would work?
Dang sorry I just seen this hope you figured it out. If you can’t get the filter off, the last resort is to hammer a screwdriver through the side of it and twist it off. As for the bolt on the bottom, if you got it in but it won’t tighten down it’s probly stripped now, you could get a tap/die and clean up the threads before you put the bolt back in
@ScoutsOut I got a few different types of filter wrenches & a set of filter pliers to try and get it off. Just need to find time to try. But I'll keep in mind the screwdriver option.
As for the bolt, the thread on that little bracket looks maybe a little damaged, but it's hard to tell. Off a Google search it seems you can potentially fix a lightly damaged thread with a tap/die set but I'll have to see. I see it's removable because there's a bolt that holds it on. Would I have to look at the bikes diagram to find the part # and see if I could order a new piece? Since it's such a random small piece for the fairing set. The fairing itself isn't moving because it's held well by the other bolts but it was weird cause it came out fine, but as soon as I went to thread it back it just would not do even with me hand twisting it.
did my first oil change probably 2 weeks ago at 606 mi. checked the drain bolt and the filter every time i rode till 900 mi. i got home today and my pil filter has a very slow oil leak, this is my first bike and not so sure on what to do. any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. also i did everything to the manuals specs .
That is weird, did you put some oil around the river of the filter? Also did you torque it to spec?
I’m an aircraft mechanic and this is my first bike. Is there a benefit to having the dealership do the 600 Mike service versus doing it myself?
I say do it yourself, I doubt they do any more than change the oil, chain adjustment and lube, and maybe white lithium on the levers..but that probly depends on the shop and mech

The snap on site is down right now or I would send the link, but they are around $600. I would recommend harbor freight, they sell the Quinn digital torque wrench for $160 ish if you want a digital one
You don't need to push the little clips, all you need to do is push the middle circular area on its head with a screwdriver and it will automatically be pushed out.

Do you replace the washer every time you change the oil
Yes, crush washers shouldn’t be reused. Not to say you can’t but the point is to get the crush upon torque
I ride on the street in city and back roads, moderate to slow speeds with the occasional rip through some turns, never redlining by any means. Should I be good to go to 3k miles after my 600 mile service? Or should I do the 600 AND the 1,000 mile service? Manual says 6 and 1000 but I know some say it depends on the riding. I even changed filter with first service

I prefer synthetic but to follow the manufacture is wise till the warranty is up

Yes but I would use manufactured recommended oil and filter until you warranty is up

Yes it’s antifreeze, but it will fluctuate a lot depending on how hot or cold the engine is

I put the specified amount of oil in my bike, but it is not showing up through the window. I set it level and leaned. I let it warm up a bit and let it sit and I still don’t see the oil through the window. It’s like it’s empty
Sry took so long to get back to you bro but have you checked again since. Sometimes it takes a while for the oil to come back down and show in the window

I had changed it 3 times before and I never had a problem with it, which is why I was so lost
Please be aware, Yamaha has reduced the drain bolt to 17ft/lb for the torque. Tons of issues, cracking and stripping at 32 ft/lb. I found this the hard way even though the manual says 32. Some now have been updated reflecting the correction.

I wasn't able to add my own audio to replace the 32 so I just clipped the audio out so hopefully that won't happen to anyone else

Why do you use mineral oil instead of synthetic? Just curious.
I’m not sure why Yamaha recommends mineral over synthetic honestly, over the years of working on cars I’ve learned to use what manufacturer recommends and oem parts for less hassle

When or should you at all switch to full synthetic?
I don't think you can go wrong with synthetic but I would use what Yamaha says to use until your warranty is up if you want to go that way.
@@ScoutsOut One more question. How do you know what filter to use? The one you listed is different than the one on my bike, mine is a 5GH-13440-80 the one linked ends in 61.
Is it normal that the bike has water dripping after an oil change. I didn't puncher anything, just removed oil bolt and filter drained, then applied oil.
It could just be condensation, did you wash the bike first?

Nice that the oil filter is located in a spot to not drain on the header, now if someone in the last 35 years could just make a faring set up that is nice and simple, couple of bolts and that's it. Whoever invented all the different plastic fasteners and multiple pieces on all sportbikes must not do maintenance on their own bike if they even ride 😂🤣 Are you ever going to hit up Buttonwillow or Sonoma or is it strictly for road use? 🤙

Every 4k is what the manual says. I’d say the only reason to do any different is if you are doing track days you might want to do it more frequently

One question! Do you have to have the bike vertical to check the oil or does the side stand work?
It has to be vertical not on the side stand

I drove my R7 850 miles so far and I didn’t changed the oil yet or took it to dealership for first service. I went to 300 miles ride and didn’t noticed I am already at 550 miles. Now it almost 850 miles, is it bad or did it already damaged the engine?
I’m sure it’s fine the possibility of damage is low but I would take it in for it’s first service or change the oil, it’s new and it’s first oil change so you know there are small metal shavings in the oil but there is a filter to grab them up

The manual is wrong for torque on the engine drain bolt, use 17 ft lb
how do you know? i looked it up and found nothing.
the new manual says : 43 N-m (4.3 kgf-m , 32 Ib-ft]
I can’t find the info either but from experience that is way to high of a torque spec for an oil drain bolt. I have never seen one on a motorcycle or car that is above 22 lb-ft, hope this helps but either way it’s your bike do what you feel is right.
Recently purchased a 2024 R7. First service coming up at 600 miles. Called Yamaha Pasadena, they want $320 for first service.
I have all the tools.
I’m debating on doing this myself and saving some money.

This was just the first 600 mile oil change, I didn’t take the bike in for its first service I just looked over the bike and changed the oil, I do however recommend the first service with the dealer just to be sure. Per the manual the first break in service is 500miles, which does include the oil change

17 mm doesn't fit on torque wrench
If you don’t have the same 3/8 or 1/2 socket you can go buy the size you need or get an adapter that will make your socket work

Just cracked my oil pan putting back in my drain bolt doing an oil change at 4k miles. Everyone is saying I'm dumb for going by that torque setting of 32 ftlbs...saying it should be more like 14-18 ft lbs. Now I'm waiting for a new pan and gasket. This sure does suck with the nice weather finally coming out.
Oh no, that's sucks! I would agree 32 is a little high most are around 18 but 32 is straight out of the manual. That really sucks man, I hope you get back on the road quick
@Scouts Out thanks man. I've been reading in other forums that it's pretty common in other Yamaha models also. Someone stated Yamaha said to them that 32 ftlbs is too much and should be about 16 ftlbs instead, but they have yet to correct it in there service manuals. I made a complaint thru BBB to see if Yamaha will contact me to work something out. Maybe refund me for what I paid for a new pan and gasket. We will see.
