    I think doing your own first service is a way to bond with your bike. It's good to know how it works and for you to get used to working on it. Also, I don't want some kid making $15 an hour accidentally banging his tool on it or scraping it against another bike. Last, I don't know how long it takes them to do the service, but I don't want to sit there and wait while my bike goes into a queue. My bike is the R7.

    Just bought a 2023 SV650 and I'm due almost for my first service called a few dealerships everyone wants from 275 to 300 and I asked what is involved? Oil and filter torque spec top off fluids. Some dealers included a throttle body sink but I was told by a very cool dealership that it's not necessary at all it's an emissions California thing and is not required in 49 other states. He said don't worry about it, if you have mechanical knowledge and you've worked on motorcycles before he recommended doing the first service myself. Thanks cyclecruza for the video it's always nice to get another riders perspective on things like these.

    Dealer told me they just check your fluids and change your oil and oil filter. He said I can do first service myself but keep the receipt. I have a z900 and I made sure I used Kawasaki parts. Got the oil change kit. It cost me a little over $60 for the kit

    Some places REQUIRE you to do the service if you want to make a warranty claim or keep your warranty valid. It depends on the dealer.

    • @CycleCruza

      Eh I've never had to make a warranty claim on any Japanese motorcycle in my life. You only worry about the warranty on Euro bikes.

    • @efrey614

      I’ve seen on new Japanese bikes as my friend only buys new the dealer said he could do it himself as long as recites were kept and kinda documented. I’ve never seen a Japanese bike go majorly before warranty though. I buy very lightly used like new, original older owner Japanese bikes ,and save a lot of money that way.

    Only brand new bike I ever bought was a '17 XSR900. I did the first oil change myself, then had the dealer do the rest of the "first service" and they charged my $40. I did it mainly for the warranty, and they do check over some important nuts and bolts and stuff and check over the bike so that's fair.

  • @vandall0160
    @vandall0160 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Only time I took the MT-07 to the shop was when looking for the hidden accessory plug under the tank. Thought before I scratched it up I would have them pull it for my charger. I got it back $200 later and they could not find it either, but I was trying to pull it without removing the tank, and figured they would, they didn't and there are now deep scratches on my frame where they tried to use long pliers. So for $200 bones I not only did not get what I asked for, but got a possible rust location, but they claimed they tightened the chain that didnt need to be tightened to bump up the price. I'll do all my own work going forward until valve time at I think 26K.

    Lots of sales agents will include it on the deal to help sell a new bike but it is important to get the break in oil out early once the engine parts become familiar with their neighbor. Lot of people shouldn’t be trusted with a wrench though so I get how dealers survive 😂

    When I bought my motorcycle I do all the services, repairs myself. Except for fitting tyres. I just get the best price from a few dealers, ride in have a coffee look at all the new/used motorcycles on display while the workshop replaces the tyres.

    Could not agree more. First services are just a money grab or for those that do not bother to do the research. Especially these Japanese bikes. Built to perform and last. Just stay on top of proper maintenance and they will keep on pushing!

    • @alexv5581
      @alexv5581 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a naive and ignorant comment. The first service is mainly to check your bike is still in tolerance as intended by design. Engine, cables, bolts, screws at correct torque specs (especially the chassis), brake pads, and more. The only person here that didn't bother doing their research was you smart guy. The first service I actually prefer a tech looking over my bike and then afterwards myself until the next major service. Stay away from European bikes, your laziness is apparent.

    I never buy a new bike anyway I always pick up bikes that have done about 7000 miles and look brand new! I save a lot of money that way, as I don't pay full price and skipped a few services (i make sure to buy ones with full service history) also they normally come with free mods done by previous owner like after-market exhaust, tail tidy, fancy LED indicators, heated grips etc.

    Sure are built well. The mx bikes are for pro mx racing for rebuilding ect. I would definitely look at that piston by 400 hrs. I’d do it before. I’ve seen the 250fx get 500 hrs on top ends so I’d think that the 450 would last as long, but you are ripping on street not trail riding. In some ways the street is better if you are keeping from redline. Dirt riding especially hard race pace is very hard on bikes. A broke amateur racer doesn’t need to rebuild every 12 hrs though maybe every 2 years on a good 4 stroke race bike depending on ride time. I always do my oil changes on time for mileage but admittedly not on time for a year. New oil I’m not changing with 300 miles on it in 1 year. I just test the oil and ride it every few months if 1 of my bikes isn’t getting ridden. I must put 14,000 miles on in 6 months of riding season on 3 bikes to reach oil change mileage on everything. 1 bike I change at half the recommended mileage as 8,000 miles seems high to me. It’s cheap so I do it. If the bike starts very easy the valves are likely ok. Gets harder to start time for valve adjustment for sure.

    What is the point you're trying to make every time with YZ450 not doing a rebuild/valve check on time and being over it by a stretch in hours? That it doesn't rattle yet and it's all fine there? Or the point about keeping 4-5 years, that does not tell anything, it's the miles that count. Overall looks like a negligence attitude. I would understand if you said like:" yeah, i've got a full service repair manual for each bike and i am doing everything what is meant for every mileage/time interval". Does not look like the case.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a dirt bike motovlogger that has had a 2019 YZ450FX with like 500+ hours and the valves has never moved out of spec. I'm doing this as an experiment. I will get a top end and service done on the YZ this winter and will share the results. I'm not one the enjoys working on a bike, I'd rather be riding than wrenching.

    • @stuglenn1112
      @stuglenn1112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Far being from me to know what's in CC head, still maybe his point is that some of these service intervals are somewhat arbitrary. Although I sure some engineering went into determining the intervals. As for valve adjustment/check I've had about a 1/2 dozen bikes with either shim over or under bucket adjustment and NOT ONE of them has ever been out of tolerance at the first valve check. Some of them it's a major PITA to check the valves as you have to remove about 1/2 the bike just to get at the valve cover. So it may give you a attitude to push it, more so if the engine is running well. I can say with older bikes that had threaded adjusters that's not the case, so those I would keep a closer eye on.
