    The director of this film, Louis Letterier, was a huge fan of the Hulk TV series. And with this story having a feel that was more in tune with the show than the comic, that’s where it worked well.
    There are so many callbacks and references to the Hulk TV Series ranging from the use of “The Lonely Man” theme song, to the use of the green eyes to indicate when the Hulk-out would happen. But, perhaps the best one is the appearance of Lou Ferrigno; the original Incredible Hulk, appeared in a short cameo with Edward Norton as a security guard whom Banner bribes with a pizza to allow him into the laboratory.
    P.S. Because you wondered where does this film fit in the timeline of the MCU, watch Iron Man 2. There is a scene where Stark and Nick Fury are meeting, and in the background is the news report about the Hulk’s battle with the Army on the college campus.

    • @Fyrecide
      @Fyrecide ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@nooneofconsequence1251 Nah. Eternals was absolutely horrid IMO.
      So was Black Panther. I'd argue Iron Man 2 was probably panned unnecessarily hard (though not the best, it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be).
      Most overrated definitely is a tie between Black Panther and Endgame. Endgame had a lot of isolated awesome moments, but it pales in comparison to the brilliance of Infinity War.

    • @nooneofconsequence1251
      @nooneofconsequence1251 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fyrecide nah. Eternals was great. Beautifully shot. It has got to be the prettiest film in the entire MCU and has probably the highest % of on-location shooting, directed by wonderful filmmaker Chloe Zhao, so not hard to figure out why. Well directed. Well cast. Well acted. Good pacing. Decent story. The popular consensus that it was horrid is... in a word... baffling. It has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any MCU film and yet it is, at WORST, somewhere around the middle of the pack. Thus... by far the most underrated.
      The Incredible Hulk is frequently cited as the worst film in the MCU or one that should just be forgotten... but it's actually a pretty decent origin story film... so it takes the #2 spot. I might give Iron Man 2 the title of 3rd most underrated... I kind of agree it's better than usually made out to be but it's also not nearly as much hated-on as Eternals or Hulk.
      Black Panther I thought was pretty bad. I don't think I'd call it "horrid." But it wasn't great. But then it has one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores, and was one of the highest grossing MCU films in the USA, and even for-fox-sake got nominated for frickin' Best Picture of the year by the Oscars... what a joke... so even though it's not the worst MCU film... it is easily hands-down the most overrated MCU film.

    • @Fyrecide
      @Fyrecide ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nooneofconsequence1251 Disagree. Eternals was boring, had hardly any real character development for the massive cast it needed to account for, and the plot is absolutely dogshit for a variety of reasons.
      Sure, it LOOKS great. But that's just a visual feast. I can get that from a VFX reel from a CGI company if that's all I wanted. I want a story to make sense, be consistent, have character engagement, and not totally fuck the MCU up in multiple ways. Eternals did none of that if you understand even the basics of writing.
      Incredible Hulk was bad, but it also is largely inconsequential to the MCU as a whole and only serve to setup that the Hulk is a thing that now exists (as does Abomination) and that he's in hiding/retreat. No catastrophic effect there. Besides, it performed terribly at a time when MCU wasn't what it is today. Iron Man did well but for all anyone knew at the time it was it's own isolated thing. The general population wasn't as sold on comic book movies yet, and Hulk didn't have the benefit of having RDJ in it as a fun, charismatic protagonist. A Hulk movie post Avengers would have done exceptionally well.

    The line that he says "Don't make me hungry, you wouldn't like me when I'm hungry" is their way of referencing the old TV show of the Incredible Hulk from the 1970's and 80's. I think a lot of people overlook the true significance of the bar scene with General Ross and Tony at the end. That scene is one of the most important, pivotal, and thrilling moments in comic book movie history because after this, comic book movies would never be the same again. Over the last 15 years, it's now become extremely second nature that multiple superheroes will be seen in a movie together. Hell, it's expected at this point. But this was the very first time EVER that we saw an already established superhero character from a completely different movie cross over into another hero's movie. Prior to this movie, you never saw the X-Men in a Tobey Spiderman movie. You never saw Superman and Batman in the same movie together. All these characters existed in the realm of their own individual cinematic universes. But here, we saw IRON MAN show up in a HULK movie. This showed us that the events in Iron Man happened in the same universe as The Incredible Hulk! It was unprecedented at the time! Yes, the filmmakers teased at the end of Iron Man that they were putting a team together. But now with this scene, these weren't just teasers anymore. It was now CEMENTED that we were gonna eventually see an established universe with a wide array of comic book heroes all coexisting in the same universe and working on a team together! The first time I saw this in theaters, I freaked out the second Tony walked onscreen because I realized we were in a whole new world of comic book movies and it was a hell of a time to be alive for a fan because at this point, ANYTHING was possible. And what a ride it's been since then.

      That just mirrored what Stan Lee did at Marvel back in the 60s. Spider-Man & Daredevil (say) would run into each other in their respective comics. Stan also placed his superheroes in the real world, usually New York, whereas DC had Metropolis, Gotham City, and Star City, among others. DC* started imitating Marvel when they saw how successful their approach became.

      Not entirely true. There was an attempt at a Marvel live action shared universe in the 80s, in TV movies. Both Thor and Daredevil appeared in Incredible Hulk TV movies. Stan Lee also made his first ever cameo in the one featuring Daredevil, "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk".
      Granted, this wasn't on the big screen, and those heroes didn't have their own movies or shows yet, but the attempt was made to judge public reaction for potential future shows/movies.

When Hulk angrily approaches them one of them said "go live, go live" that means switch to live ammo.

    In the comics, Bruce is terrified of being angry even before becoming the Hulk. His father was an abusive drunk and ended up killing his mother, and died himself later on. He repressed his rage for years in the fear of becoming like his father until the Hulk came into existence. In the MCU that happened with a serum that used gamma radiation as a catalyst but in the comics it was a gamma explosion he was caught in while trying to save someone in the testing area. The Hulk is the physical form of Bruce's trauma and repressed anger given form. In the comics, the Hulk had multiple forms and colors, all representing different parts of his mind, but the movies don't really go into that so it's not important

    Fun reactions! I'm always impressed when I find someone who can still bring something fresh to a film I know so well.
    Some behind the scenes notes: Edward Norton fought with producers over the final cut of the film, and when he didn't get his way he refused to do press for it beyond a single contractual appearance... that was pretty much the reason for him being replaced for future films.
    Because Universal had made the original (largely unrelated) Ang Lee Hulk movie, they had the right of first refusal to distribute any other Hulk films. Originally, this was fine with Marvel when they were independent, as they produced the MCU movies and then had them distributed by larger studios. But then Disney bought up Marvel, and Disney doesn't want to make a film for Universal to distribute and profit off of. So there hasn't been a direct sequel as a result. However, Hulk can guest star in other films without having to involve Universal, and so that's how they've used him since.

    5:11 Now, here, General Ross made a curious mistake which makes his rank a bit of a _puzzle_ to me.
    Consider the words of Sun Tzu in _The Art of War._ "Know your enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the outcome of 1000 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, and for every victory, you will suffer a defeat. Know neither your enemy nor yourself and you will succumb in every confrontation."
    This book is required reading at every military academy we have in the US, so whenever you see a military officer, it's safe to assume they've probably read it. It's safe to assume they've read Sun Tzu's timeless advice about knowing one's enemy.
    General Ross just sent a team to apprehend Banner, while allowing them to continue believing that they were only going up against a single, mere mortal. That's what enabled him to ultimately get away.

    The MCU writing is crazy in this film, bc this came out before Captain America the 1st Avenger, but there is a line in that film that perfectly explains why Blonsky has the reaction he does, Dr. Erskine to Steve Rogers
    “But more important, the man. The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion."
    It’s why Schmitt transformed into the red skull and why Blonsky becomes the Abomination and to some degree (spoilery-ish) John Walker goes down the road he does in “Falcon & The Winter Soldier”

    The "thunderclap" that the Hulk does to put out the fire was one of the things I used to love to see him do in the old 60s cartoons. It was WAY powerful where if he did it hard enough it would blow people, jeeps, and even make tanks flip. It's not just a wind thing, it's also a shockwave thing. He doesn't do it a lot, but I always thought it was very cool. In DC, the supers can do it too (Superman, Supergirl, etc.). It's a great form of crowd control when there are multiple adversaries.

    I thought Mark Ruffalo made a more believable Banner (more mellow, more cautious) but I wish they had just left this version of The Hulk. This version is the one that the madder he gets, the stronger he becomes. "I fell like this intro's trying to do a lot in a short period of time."
    The intro is loosely based on _The Incredible Hulk_ TV series from the '70s-''80s. Especially the shots where Bruce is in the machine, which recreates the same shots from the TV opener.
    "So he just has to stay calm all the time."
    Anger _IS_ the most famous trigger, but it's not consistant. In the comics, it was originally a day/night transformation (which Marvel sometimes goes back to).
    "I need to figure out when this is on the timeline."
    _The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2,_ and _Thor_ all take place in the same week.
    "Is this that stuff they used on Tony Stark? The paralysis thing? No... it can't be."
    Actually, yes, it is. The fact that it's not working on the Hulk says more about the Hulk than about the equipment.
    "How do you report on your insurance claim that a Hulk destroyed your apartment?"
    You call _Damage Control._ (I have absolutely no idea where Damage Control gets their budget to fix stuff, btw... but it clearly has more money than most nations.)
    "Can a Hulk even die?"
    Yes. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Now ask if they _STAY_ dead.
    "What? This boy's got some magic within him! He can just... OMG, how did he do that?"
    The Hulk Clap is a reference to the '80s cartoon series. There were lots of rules back then to sanitize cartoons, and many of them had to do with violence against other characters. The animators created the Hulk Clap as a way for Hulk to knock over other people (via shock waves) without actually punching them. The move has found its way into later cartoons and comics, as well as into the MCU.
    "You want to keep him alive for some reason?"
    Comics _USUALLY_ don't kill their villains.

    Really enjoying your MCU reactions so far, Jax. And your partnership with Lamby is great! (Or is it 'Llammy'? Sorry, I can't tell whether she's a sheep or a llama 😊)
    The movies don't touch on Bruce's background very much, but in the comics his character suffered from a terribly abusive childhood, which left him with trauma and unresolved rage. We don't know whether the MCU version of Bruce Banner has a similar backstory, but if so then the experimental serum very possibly enhanced that anger, and turned it into something monstrous. Yet another example of why most people should never become super soldiers.
    If you're looking for a detailed picture of the timeline for the Phase 1 films, try looking up "Fury's Big Week" online. Although you might want to wait until you've finished watching "The Avengers", just so that nothing gets spoiled.

    Betty doesn't want Bruce to become a purposeful killer, which is why she told him to stop before he killed Blonsky, not because she cares about Blonsky in particular. Anybody that dies because of the Hulk, before this, was some form of accident and collateral damage because the Hulk is not precise. You've seen the property damage that happens when he gets involved. This is why the general public does view him as a monster. How'd you feel that if every so often this big green thing popped up and just went on a rampage every time he appears? Most people would be like, "Someone needs to catch or kill that thing!" But, as SHIELD figured out, Banner is fine if you don't mess with him.

    Doctor Samuel Sterns (Mr Blue, played by Tim Blake Nelson) is better known in the comics as the villain The Leader. His brain mutated by the same radiation that created the Hulk, he is as smart as the Hulk is strong, and he's obsessed with using Gamma radiation to change the world.

    29:55 - It's called the Hulk Thunderclap. He literally claps his hands so hard it creates a concussive shockwave and sonic boom.
    To give you some background information on the Hulk movie franchise, Marvel released a previous movie called Hulk (2003), starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly, which was an origin story. It was pretty good IMO but many criticized it as more of a drama than a comicbook superhero action movie.
    So Hulk (2008) was created as an indirect sequel (The flashbacks were pseudo-retelling the 2003 Hulk events), similar to how Aliens (1986) was an indirect sequel to Alien (1979) in terms of look and feel.
