    I am 99% certain that Kat Denning saw 'Mjolnir' in the script and didn't have a clue on how to pronounce it. So she just waited until Thor says it, and then just ad-lib'd in "Meow Meow" in the moment. And they kept it in the movie. I think it's awesome that you pronounce it that way!

      @@reactswithjax It's not that hard, really. Think "myole-near". Like "mole near", but with a 'y' after the 'm'. That gets you pretty close, probably close enough. If you want to be even more accurate, the 'o' is really more like "eur", with one of those weird French vowel sounds, like in the word "milieu". And the "near" part is shortened slightly, more like "nir". "Mjolnir", with two dots over the 'o'. The 'j' is pronounced like a 'y'. As in "jotun" - frost giant. Or Johann. Or hallelujah.

    Mjölnir, or Mjolnir, would be pronounced ˈmjɔːlnɪər or Myaul-near. Eric's pronunciation is probably the most accurate as Stellan Skarsgård is Swedish. Darcy continues to pronounce it as Mew Mew or Meow Meow. I remember plenty of books as a child that retold the stories of the Æsir of Asgard.

      @@HarborKat that was Erik Masterson, who was much later.
      In the very first Thor story, Dr. Donald Blake, who was a skinny guy with a limp, finds a cane-like stick and when he smacks it on the ground, he becomes Thor. Kind of a Billy Batson Shazam situation. After a while, that became confusing when it was apparent that Thor was clearly a real person and not just some identity that Blake becomes. So, they retconned Blake into actually being Thor. Turns out Odin made him a weak human with no memory of being Thor when he bannished him. After a while, Thor stopped changing back to Donald Blake and just stayed Thor all the time.

    Honestly I find this movie to be criminally underrated in the MCU. It's so great from the world building and I love Thor's arc of being a selfish prince getting exiled to the middle of nowhere. And at the end he decides to make the personal sacrifice realizing that he could never see Jane again but knowing this is what he has to do. It's a shame the other Thor movies were never able to build upon this first one but I absolutely love this movie. It's not my favorite in the MCU but it's a little gem I wish got more love.

    The blue boxy thing is "The Casket of Ancient Winters" in the comics. It was broken open in 1983 or so and plunged the entire world into a horrifically deep winter. Most of the heroes in the Marvel Universe had to cooperate to find the pieces and reassemble it, and to fight off the strengthened Frost Giants who took advantage of the situation.
    IIRC, it was Spider-Man and the Human Torch (from the Fantastic Four) who eventually got it reassembled and closed. It is very cold to the touch, which is probably part of the reason it briefly turned Loki blue in this film.

    • @THEREALSCRAPPY
      @THEREALSCRAPPY 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Didn't Loki turn blue briefly because of him being unaffected by the Frost Giants' cold touch, due to his heritage?

    • @tommc4916
      @tommc4916 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@THEREALSCRAPPY Yes, in this film. But I don't recall him ever coming into contact with it in print continuity. All three of the Thor films borrow heavily from the Walt Simonsen writing/art era of about 40 years ago, but the MCU scriptwriters throw enough change-ups to keep even us olden-time fanbois guessing.
      In the comics, it was accidentally broken open when the Dark Elf king Malekith (cf: Thor, The Dark World) was fooling around with it. The Asgardians didn't ever have it in their possession. IIRC.

    A lot of people get surprised when they see that Loki kills his biological father. It actually makes a lot of sense when you consider a few things. First, you have to understand that Loki was written as a textbook sociopath. The writers did a really good job of writing him that way, it's very believable. Sociopaths are extremely insecure but they project that through apparent strength that usually comes through as bullying or domination. Now, add to that that Loki grew up being taught to have a racism against the Frost Giants. He views them as being a much lesser race than the Asgardians because that's how he was raised. Add to both of those things that he could always tell the man that he called Dad always seemed to favor his brother and he never understood the extent of why. He probably thought that he worked twice as hard as Thor and was twice as qualified to be king. Once he found out that he was actually a Frost Giant adopted as a baby, all of these factors together caused him to loathe himself and he wanted to prove not only to Odin but even more so to himself that he was worthy of being Asguardian and King. He had no new love or loyalty to his biological father, he just became desperate to prove that he was better.

    Since you're so easily distracted by food (the pie did look tasty) and also a fan of romantic fantasy like "Once Upon a Time" I *highly* recommend checking out the brilliant but short-lived (only two seasons) series "Pushing Daises". It's hilarious- I think you'll get a real kick out of that show! FYI it's a spin-off of the series "Dead Like Me", which is more of a dark comedy. Both are excellent, so I suggest adding them to your list of things to react to- or your polls where Patreon peeps can vote for things to watch ;)

      @@grumpy_older_man the spinoff status is unofficial, but I read PD was originally pitched as an episode of DLM... There was going to be an episode where the Reapers couldn't do their jobs because Ned had shown up and done his thing.

    Ohhh don’t forget the RedSkull also referred to the Tesseract as “the jewel of Orin’s Treasure room.”
    We saw the treasure room in this movie. So the question is “how did it get to earth?”
    Don’t be harsh on yourself. I always recommend watching Captain America 1 first when watching the movies. Then in release order the first time. As it helps you understand how Tony is the way he is, why the Tesseract in the end credit scene is so important, and you know how it got in the hands of Shield.
    Sorry. I think I commented thst on another video. Haha.

I highly recommend you watch it (before "Avengers", if that's still possible). It will give you a little bit on the type of person Agent Coulson is.

    44:40 -- RE: Saying the Name of the Hammer; Fun Fact! English shares a heck of a lot of common ancestry with languages other than Latin or Gaelic, including Norse and Germanic ones. That's why we have at least half of the days of our week referencing Norse gods: Thorsday, Frigsday, and Wednesday AKA Odin's Day.The O sound in Odin has become identified with the letter W to make clear how to pronounce it. O cognate with Owe.
    So, here's some basic tips for knowing what to do when you read letters that have inflections like an umlaut (double dot) on them. The ö sound means more like look than Loki. The J is half silent, a Y sound as with Fjord, or Bjorn. So It's Mjool-nir, and the Nir part doesn't require you show your teeth when you make the I sound.

    There's more than just nine realms. The nine realms Thor speaks of are interconnected realms that he can access through the bifrost bridge. The tree under the bifrost bridge called Yggdrasil is what connects the realms with each other. There's a much larger universe beyond the nine realms which you'll discover in the guardians of the galaxy movies and captain marvel.

    One thing about marvel that you’ve picked up on is through your questions. Specifically the gods and which do they include. It leaves you wondering and interesting to learn more. What do the power of the gods include? We saw what red skull used it for, but what other powers does it have also draws interest to look forward to watching. Great observations and I look forward to you remembering the questions for later movies. No spoilers (hopefully), just excited.

    In Marvel comic, all the gods exist, even the big one. :) Without going into detail, it's like a tier system. There is the mythological, there is the Marvel creations, and then there is the big G God. Fantastic Four got to meet him once.

    7:05 Actually, some do (not in the way you might assume). The samurai, for example, will embrace the inevitability of death as a way to banish any fear-- because _Fear is actually Hope placed in conflict with the danger of the situation._
    A man who is truly without fear is a man who has given up their hope-- which is something to be pitied rather than aspired.

    7:21 "Thor is reminding me a little bit of Tony Stark. At the top of his game. Thinks a little too highly of himself. Maybe he has good reason to think highly of himself, but this'll be a fun journey watching him evolve."
    Oh honey. Just wait until you get to Doctor Strange.
    Also just to answer a quick question you had, Thor and Loki are 1,500 years old. Odin is 5,000 years old.
    Lastly, I just wanna say that I am absolutely ecstatic about how much you're paying close attention to the big picture and trying to link everything together from previous movies. All the talking points you mentioned after the post-credits scene about the origins of the Tesseract to Red Skull trying to use it to harness the power of the gods to Howard Stark eventually finding it and being a founding member of SHIELD are the exact type of things you wanna keep in mind while going down this MCU journey. And remember that you're only just starting! There's still over ten more years of the MCU that you haven't even seen yet! It's a hell of a fun ride!

    My thoughts on "worthy". It's not simply valor, or humility, or kindness, or purity of intent. If it was that simple, Cap would have been able to lift the hammer on his first try. Worthiness, in the context of Odin's geas, means all of the above plus the wisdom of a king. A king puts their people first, always. If it comes down to a contest between ego and the good of their people, the true king always sets aside their ego.
    Steve Rogers showed that wisdom when he pretended to be a Hydra agent in Endgame. He could have KO'd the entire lift full of men and taken the Stone, but he swallowed his pride, put his ego aside, and smiled at people who were his enemies, pretending to be the thing he hated most for the good of the world. That's why, next time he tried, Mjolnir found him worthy.
    Vision, the other 'worthy' Avenger, is a sentient able to set aside their ego for what they calculate to be the common good. That's why he was able to lift the hammer moments after being 'born'. I'm curious if, after experiencing love and life for awhile, and developing a stronger sense of self he would still be able to lift Mjolnir.

    Many fans try to theorize what exactly makes the hammer seem heavy or is it heavy at all. Some scientific way to interpret is the hammer has some kind of ability to manipulate gravitational forces so the non worthy subject trying to lift make the hammer increase the opposing force to counteract the lifting.
