The reason why Surtur (big fire demon from the beginning and then the end of the movie) was so much stronger at the end and why Hela, who was able to overpower Thor, wasn't able to easily "kill" him like Thor did in the beginning, is because of The Eternal Flame... Remember at the beginning of the movie Surtur himself said that he needed only to be reunited with The Eternal Flame to reach the peak of his powers and "to be as tall as mountains and plunge his sword thru the heart of Asgard"... Now, whether Surtur is, in general, stronger than Hela or Odin or Thor is up to debate; but IN THIS SPECIFIC SCENARIO he is, he is pretty much unbeatable given that he is the embodiment or the realization of Ragnarok, the end and rebirth of Asgard and it's realm... So I think the interpretation is that no matter how strong Hela is, once Surtur got in contact with the Eternal Flame and started down the path of Ragnarok and fulfilling his "destiny", there was little to do to stop him

Well Thor heard the whole Ragnarok story and how it would be triggered, so what does Thor do take the crown to Asgard, surtur had no way of getting to Asgard, he had absolutely no clue Heimdall wasn't the guardian anymore, surtur is older than Odin I'm pretty sure he's had plenty of time to plan this, after many battles with Odin I'm sure surtur excepted defeat. But Thor the master strategist put the grown in the same vault with the eternal flame

    • @Cream-2128

My favorite funny moments are Loki falling for 30 minutes, Thor’s hilarious scream, Korg saying “piss off, ghost” then kicking the wall, Loki getting his revenge saying “that’s how it feels,” and Bruce’s voice changing with his veins turning green when he said “made me a little weird.”

For me this movie was the reason to stop watching Marvel movies. Too much ridiculing of characters. When all characters are just clowns, it's not anymore the same. This was just a parody of it, what Marvel movies might be if done properly. Humor is one thing, but they made Loki and Thor to complete clowns, not anymore main characters. Just incompetent and powerless fools.

Cate Blanchett was amazing. Thor having the umbrella is actually a callback to the old comics/cartoon. In it he had an alias Dr Donald Blake who had a walking stick. When he hit the stick to the ground he would become Thor. They did it in the scene when they first see Hela. And congrats on knowing Valkyrie was an Asgardian! You were so excited 😂.

"They sing no songs in Hel, nor do they celebrate heroes, for silent is that dismal realm and cheerless. But the story of the Gjallerbru and the god who defended it is whispered across the nine worlds. And when a new arrival asks about the one to whom even Hela bows her head, the answer is always the same: He stood alone at Gjallerbru... and that answer is enough." - The sacrifice in the end is inspired from this quote from the comics when Skurge the Executioner saves the world(s) by a heroic last stand.

Welcome back, Jax!! This is the movie that changed the MCU's take on Thor and resulted in him becoming hugely popular like Iron Man and Captain America. While the earlier two Thor movies had a more dramatic tone (and were closer to the comic book portrayal of Thor), audiences just didn't love Thor as much as Tony/Steve until this film. The blend of action, comedy and drama was awesome!
As others have mentioned, this movie borrowed bits of major comic book storylines. Hulk being champion of the Grandmaster's arena on Sakaar was the biggest one, but Skurge the Executioner was another. In the comics he was one of Thor's oldest enemies, yet he died helping Thor against the forces of Hela. And yes, he also had a pair of AK-47s from Earth named "Des" and "Troy".
And Cate Blanchett was amazing as Hela, I'm just sad that her character was apparently was killed off in her first movie appearance. Anyway, your MCU journey continues....onward and upward!

In both the comics and actual Norse mythology Hela is Loki's daughter rather than his and Thor's sister, but they changed it for the MCU as to not make Thor's family tree more complicated than it had to be.
As for Surtur, he is the king of Muspelheim and the original keeper of the Eternal Flame. It was made with his fire and strengthens him, so when Loki put his 'crown' in it and he was reborn, he basically became invincible until his destiny of destroying Asgard was fulfilled.

The inspiration for this film is very interesting. The Hulk aspect is based on Planet Hulk, Gamma bomb causes Hulk to lose control and attack Las Vegas. A group called the Illuminati made up of Namor, Tony Stark, Mister Fantastic, Black Bolt, Doctor Stephen Strange, and Professor Charles Xavier come together and decide that the Hulk is too too dangerous to remain on Earth. So they trick Hulk into entering the Earths orbit to destroy a rogue satellite but the Illuminati use a shuttle to jettison him from the solar system. They plan for Hulk to land on a peaceful planet but instead he enters a wornhole that transports him to Sakaar.
Hulk then becomes a popular hero in the Sakaar Arena. Of course the MCU has it's own changes for example Hulk left after Age of Ultron on the Quinjet and ended up travelling through a blackhole leading him to Sakaar but overall it's a very Planet Hulk storyline only taking small slice of the full story from the comics.
Edit: Little edit but the Illuminati have no connection to the "real life" Illuminati. There basically a secret society of superheroes with each member representing a certain people or group. So for example Tony represents the Avengers, Mister Fantastic represents the Fantastic Four and the science-based superhero community. Professor Charles Xavier represents the X-Men and the Mutant Community etc. The members all come together to make hard decisions in secret so for example sending Hulk away from Earth.
Marvel at the time did not have the rights to X-Men, and Fantastic Four, Namor's rights were on the fence so that's one reason why we've haven't seen them. Tony did have a fun Illuminati app on his phone in Iron Man 2 I believe but yeah to really have the Illuminati as a group you need the other members.

That shot of Thor coming down on the bridge while engulfed in lightning is probably the COOLEST shot in the entire MCU, and that's in a movie FULL of awesome cinematic moments like that (like the group of Valkyrie confronting Hela in the flashback). Man, we're so close to the end of Phase 4, I'm ridiculously excited for the next batch of reactions! :D
And yeah I think your analysis of the Hulk is pretty spot on (to the point that I think they even confirmed that canonically). He's been Hulk so long that he can speak more and even control his emotions a little. This is generally helped by Banner being able to "focus" Hulk's rage and who's a friend/foe, if he has control over the transformation (you could argue he didn't get to do that when Natasha pushed him off the cliff to force him to transform, but I think it's fine there since he probably still willingly changed).

Most people don’t tumble to the fact Hulk is basically a child. But that’s definitely how he’s portrayed in the MCU. Which makes sense. That identity’s life experiences are very limited, and mostly all suck. But here we see Hulk as a PERSON for the first time. He has friends. He makes jokes. Okay, they’re about as sophisticated as Drax’s jokes, but still…

The Hulk is really a complex character. His story is more like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. In the comics, Bruce Banner has suffered through trauma since he was a child. As an adult scientist, he is exposed to Gamma radiation which allows him to shape shift into the Hulk. The Hulk’s personality and physical form can be different depending on which persona is manifesting.

the faces on the building, where they were building the face of Hulk, are faces of former champions. The horse faced one is Beta Ray Bill who in the comics defeated Thor in a one on one to the death duel to win Mjölner, Beta Ray Bill spared Thor and Odin as gratitude for sparing his son made him similar weapon to Mjölner called Stormbreaker which also made Beta Ray Bill able to change to a less conspicuous humanoid form. The other champions on the building were Man-Thing, Ares, Dark-Crawler, and Bi-Beast. Ofc MCU changed a lot from the comics, so I am just saying it from the comics, so there is zero MCU spoilers

Oh, Donald Blake, the alias he used in the first movie, is also a callback to the comics.

RIP Ray Stevenson and Stan Lee. It's difficult to deny the film's significant visual influence from Jack Kirby. Hennah, a Kirby admirer for a long time, said, "Jack Kirby from the 1960s was our inspiration. Since I was 15 years old, I've been a Jack Kirby comics reader. To truly get into it and find it amazing, I was always just affected by this enormous comic celebrity. "Now our set design becomes another world; you have to examine how he obtained his shapes, what was worn by them, what was applied to them, and how he used them," Hennah explained how the production design embraced King Kirby's aesthetic. Although it doesn't resemble Jack Kirby, it does have an effect. Finding something-which is the path of design-finding things, subconscious things, is extremely exciting to me."That was really a Jack Kirby influence, and Mayes Rubio-who's costume designer-took the ball we had and ran with it as well," said Mayes Rubio of the planet Sakaar's design. "So we sort of were on the same page from day one regarding the Sakaarian look, the people, the concept of Sakaar."

In the comics, Skurge was one of Thor's longest-standing enemies. He was incredibly powerful, almost as powerful as Thor, but he was madly in love with Thor's archenemy who manipulated him into attacking Thor again and again. Finally he realized he was just being used, that he could have been one of Asgard's greatest heroes but instead he allowed himself to become a stooge, a villain, and laughingstock. He has this amazing redemption arc that ends with him blocking the way out of Hel so that Thor, Sif, the Warriors Three, and others could escape. He fights off the legions of the dead for as long as he can, but eventually he is overwhelmed. It's very easily the best death in comics, handled so well that it can make a grown man cry.

Taika Waititi stated that the script had altered since then and that the final film's aesthetic was still unknown, but that "there are buddy elements to it between Thor and the Hulk." He described Thor: Ragnarok as a "'70s/'80s sci-fi fantasy" and "the most 'out there' of all the Marvel movies," with a tone similar to Big Trouble in Little China. The road trip portion of the film was inspired by 48 Hrs. (1982), Withnail and I (1987), and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987). Waititi also requested that each department's heads watch Flash Gordon (1980) before starting work."Thor: Ragnarok" draws inspiration from two comic-book worlds: writer Greg Pak's acclaimed 2006 story "Planet Hulk" and writer-artist Walt Simonson's epic '80s run on "The Mighty Thor." Here are some "Ragnarok" scenes stolen straight from the pages of those two creative minds' comic books.

If you remember in Captain America, Red Skull said the tesseract was the prize of Odin's war room. It was the same tree, it depicted the World Tree, yggdrasill, which in Norse mythology bridges the realms, and is fractured in Ragnarok. Thor also explains it in the first movie, which came out 2 months before the first CA.
Surtr says in the beginning gaining the eternal flame is what makes him powerful enough to destroy Asgard.
Korg is played by the director Taika Waititi.
The gauntlet you commented on was modeled after the one you saw Thanos wear, but as Hela says, it's a fake. Comic readers knew what it was when we saw it in the first Thor movie, so I guess they were explaining the continuity error between it being in Odin's war room in Thor and in Thanos' possession in Avenger's.
The friend from work joke was suggested by a make-a-wish child recipient to them, and it made the cut.
From this point on, skipping around is absolutely not permitted. All of it is important and where it leads, you just have to see.

The tree on the door Heimdallr opened for the refugees was indeed the same tree from Captain America: The First Avenger. This tree is Yggdrasil, aka the tree of life and it represents all nine realms. Yggdrasil lies in the center of the universe and it’s branches extend to the heavens and three main roots dig into the ground. These three roots lead to Urðarbrunnr, Hvergelmir, and Mímisbrunnr. The gods also meet at Yggdrasil daily to discuss government and the peace between the realms.

Chris Hemsworth's brother Luke Hemsworth played Thor in the wonderful play. One of the college girls that asked for a picture is Taylor Hemsworth a second cousin to the Hemsworth brothers. She's the one that said she was sorry that Jane Dumped Thor.
The umbrella is actually a reference to Dr. Donald Blake who inherited the power of Thor in Marvel Comics. Mjolnir was disguised as n umbrella. Dr. Blake would bang the umbrella on the ground. The umbrella turned into the hammer and Dr. Blake became The Mighty Thor. We saw the name Dr. Donald Blake in Thor.

One of the things that makes me wonder is the fact that Loki and Thor were tossed out of the biforst by Hela only moments apart, yet Loki had been on Sakaar for weeks before Thor arrived.
They say time works differently on Sakaar, and it makes me wonder truly how long the hulk actually was there, since he was gone for two Earth Years. I think it could have been "decades".
