It's a great example of truly expert songwriting. Such a big part of the song's beauty comes from how clumsy the speaker is. He's hesitant and shy, not sure how to say what he's trying to say. He keeps starting sentences and then not finishing them. You can feel how scared he is to say the wrong thing, and that is what makes his emotion shine through, far more than if he was reciting polished, perfect phrases. It's the best evocation of that moment of confessing love that I've ever heard.
That’s always been my favorite part about the song. It’s always easy to put myself in the lines of the first time you put your feelings into words with someone you love.
How I wish I could still sing "How wonderful life is while your in this world"......at age 74 that feeling is replaced by tears

One thing is people don't realize that Top of the Pops did not have a hard requirement to mime the vocals, it's just that in the early years all the groups/acts did for some reason. By 1971 somebody like Elton John shows up and there is no way he'd mime.
My favorite song. I was so happy that it was for me, and for my first girlfriend. You can tell everybody that it's for you.

this was the first dance at our wedding 21 years ago, and still is my favorite Elton song, though Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me is a close second. Elton has 50 years of songs to choose from, lol. so there is no shortage of choices.

I love your reaction. I love Elton John (my dad let me go to his concert with a family friend when I was like 4. Saw him again later) but he is just my favorite. Crocodile Tock always held a special place in heart though. Loved dancing to it.

Elton is my favorite artist! I first saw him in concert in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia, I was only 12 I went with my big brother, my brother was killed in Vietnam a year later! I always thing of him when I hear this song because it was his favorite! God Bless!

Time after time. If you have a great melody with great lyrics and sing to the ladies you will have a classic hit that will last forever. And probably be in the hall of fame.
