I'm excited for you man. I was your age when I bought my first Elton single ("Philadelphia Freedom") then album ("Captain Fantastic"). Then I started backtracking his catalogue. What a great journey you're starting.
With Elton, you will get plenty of piano. But... you go crazy for a killer guitar solo too. So, you MUST do "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" especially for 'Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' Trust me.

Or you could start near the beginning with his "Madman Across the Water" album and move thru their progression. His music changed a lot, but was always great. This album 'Elton John' is generally similar to Your Song piano and orchestration. 'Madman Across the Water' is an extension but is more powerful sound wise and 'Goodbye Yellowbrick Road' is his magnum opus, with more rock type tracks. I'd start with these 3 and see how you feel about continuing. Always loved every song 50 years on.
Elton is as a diverse performer as there is. He can do rock& roll bangers, ballads like the one you just reacted to and so many in between. If you ever watched the original Lion King movie, Elton sang the songs that Bernie created the lyrics to. Just listen to Crocodile Rock , Someone Saved My Life Tonight, and Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding and Levon. You will get the sense how different his music was across his career.
Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics. And then separately Elton puts them to music. What’s astonishing is that some of the lyrics (more poems) are such that no one else could make a song out of them. Here’s an example. One of my favorite Elton songs is Levon. Read the lyrics and then listen to one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Elton is a great pianist and has a huge catalog worth checking out. Another great pianist who is a prolific successful song writer is Billy Joel. He wrote one of the best songs about the war in Vietnam ever written, the video of Goodnight Saigon will bring you to tears...beautiful must see video.

So tough to pick an album. If I had to pick one, I'd say Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy, It was the first album ever to enter the charts at #1. Elton's drummer, Nigel Olsson is incredible on it.
Sir Elton John was asked to play at Princess Diana's funeral. There was a tribute song to Marilyn Monroe called "Candle in the Wind". He changed the lyrics to "Goodbye England's Rose " for Diana's funeral.

Oh boy,,, you've just unlocked a 60-year catalog. You're in for a treat. Sir Elton's style varies throughout the years but the quality lyrics and piano are always present. As others have mentioned, you can't go wrong with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I was lucky to see him live in 1992. Queen's Freddie Mercury just passed 4 month before and Elton's tribute to him was playing "The Show Must Go On". which was phenomenal and very touching.
This song, being a slower ballad-like production, was a major game changer when it hit the radio in the early seventies. Slow music was struggling under the heavier rock music that had been blasting the charts from the mid-sixties to then. Taupin’s lyrics and EJ’s music scores hit the public with such a simple love song, that it helped bring in many, many tender, mellow, easy listening songs, which defined the seventies.
Elton is a world treasure. As far as albums go, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece but it's a two album set so it will take a bit of time to get through. Madman Across The Water is a single album with three of his greatest songs of which Tiny Dancer is an ultimate must hear. Elton is a master of the piano; I know you'll be able to appreciate his talent and artistry. Can't wait to have you dive into his rabbit hole, you'll get lost.
You should listen to his song "Friends." It was my class song in '72. It holds more meaning now than it did back then. It is a short song not played much, but it is on par with "Your Song."
Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) is a good one from Sir Elton John. He is a rabbit hole worth exploring for sure. So many different sounds from him.
Yellow Brick Road was the first album I ever bought. This is one of his most quiet and sweet songs. He has several that are more rockers. I am feeling really old right now. When you said that you have never really listened to Elton. I have trouble imagining a world without his music in it. This was the soundtrack of my youth. Play this one for your girlfriend and tell her it is her song now and she will love you forever.

Recently he has collaborated with Dua Lipa and Britany Spears who incorporated his songs Rocket Man and Tiny Dancer into their songs. Elton had a song writing partner who wrote lyrics for him. Elton felt he couldn’t write lyrics.

He is one of the first artists I listened to as a child this was the first song on my parents tape as it happens,. So Sir Elton John was in Liverpool a few weeks ago doing his farewell tour. His piano skills both playing and composing are increadible, his style does vary there are more swing tunes, ballads rock, rock and roll, he has dueted and collaberated with many famous artists. He did a memorable episode of the Muppet Show. he has made film appearances and had a film made about his life.
I saw him last week in London on his farewell tour, 20,000 packed into the O2 Arena. He was awesome live, was my first and sadly the last time seeing him live. check out the yellow brick road album. his most recent hit was a duet with Dua Lipa, Cold Heart. check that one too.
Another GREAT one is "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues"...and "The One." Haunting song about a father and son (son dying of AIDS) is "The Last Song."

Many will suggest Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - a brilliant LP as well. Can't go wrong with Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. If I were you, I would delve into the genius of Elton John and Bernie Taupin - early years first, you'll understand why as you take this amazing journey. ✌❤
“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” gets my vote for next. But “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Just The Piano Player” is a personal favorite because I listened to the 8-track dozens of times as a child.

Your best starting point based on variety and quality is "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (1973), but everything from 1970-1976 is excellent, top notch and fantastic. He also had many good and some great albums through the decades since.
Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water his first three albums were unique for their time and well worth checking out. There were many hits after those albums but for me those three were an incredible introduction.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a great album to start with. Elton John was extremely influential for a wide variety of musicians, from pop to hard rock. Elton had some pretty popular music later but his '70s music is *the* classic Elton John, and is several levels above his later stuff in my opinion.
Elton John wrote a lot of the soundtracks for Disney movies so you probably have heard more Elton John than you think. One of my personal Elton John favorites is a dual song called, "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" but there are SO many hits that are fantastic by him. It's a very deep rabbit hole.

The album called Tumbleweed Connection is a great album to start with from Elton John but having said that, many of his albums from the 1970's are really great albums and most are well worth an album review. Being a huge Elton John fan and personally owning all of his albums from the 70's, I can tell you that his music is beyond great and it is hard to go wrong with his great music! Dive Deep, you will be glad you did!😊
One of his first and best - up there with his top 6. For me anyway. This came out right after my parents got divorced. 😟 I was about 11. It reminds me of being with my Dad and little brother. He is an absolute brilliant pianist. SO, To answer your question: Listen to “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. No way in hell you won’t like it. It’s that good.

I saw Elton John live in London about 8 years ago. He was absolutely amazing. He can still knock his songs out live to a level that is so close to the original recording it's insane.
Piano player. Great voice. Had a great writer. He was a monster in the 70's. Few equals in number of great songs. Just about impossible to recommend what else of his to listen to next. I have a dozen or more favorites, and only a few may overlap favorites of other fans. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is my fave song, although a tough call. The story is timeless.
You can never (ever) go wrong with Elton. I would suggest covering his discography in the order they were released. Starting with the Elton John album (BTW, his very first album is called "Empty Sky"), but most people are not aware of this album. If you wanted to cover a song from that album I'd recommend: Skyline Pigeon. Anyway, you'll get a much better perspective of his music going in chronological order - at least through the 70s. BTW, I'll add a key thing that makes me absolutely LOVE Elton... the Band. His band (Nigel, Dee, Davey, and Elton) are some of the most underrated musicians ever IMHO. I can see why since Elton is such a big name and brand. (Oh, and pay attention to the background vocals, Dee, Davey, and Nigel - kick ass on them.)
You could hardly have picked a better song to start with. One of his beautifullest ballads (and certainly one of the simplest and easiest to understand). EJ owned the charts in the mid 70s.
When I was young, 20 yrs old, I had a lovely boyfriend who got me a pretty little promise ring, and he wooed me with flowers and romantic walks along the water's edge.. and this was *the song*.. that he said was our song because it's my song lol. ^_^ There's nothing like young love. xo ^_^

Probably the Best Entertainer of all time. Yellow Brick Road album is tops but, all his works are terrific. Do yourself a favor and listen to all his works.
This is one of my favorites ever. You should also check out "Tiny Dancer" by Elton as well. He is a really versatile artist though.

Start with this album from 1970 and listen to "I Need You To Turn To", "Sixty Years On", "The Boarder Song" but most of all, "The Greatest Discovery". Then move on to the album "Goodbye Yellow-Brick Road" and do all of it, if possible. Elton's impact on music is profound; He's a true artist. You are going to enjoy the journey with Elton! He is one of the first artists I listened to as a child this was the first song on my parents tape as it happens,. So Sir Elton John was in Liverpool a few weeks ago doing his farewell tour.
His piano skills both playing and composing are increadible, his style does vary there are more swing tunes, ballads rock, rock and roll, he has dueted and collaberated with many famous artists. He did a memorable episode of the Muppet Show. he has made film appearances and had a film made about his life.
I would call him a national treasure, but t think he's more of a world treasure.

I saw him last week in London on his farewell tour, 20,000 packed into the O2 Arena. He was awesome live, was my first and sadly the last time seeing him live. check out the yellow brick road album. his most recent hit was a duet with Dua Lipa, Cold Heart. check that one too.

Wow, where to start - hard one for several reasons . There are songs I think you need to hear right out of the starting gate. But, start with Elton's early years. That is a must . Those are the years you need to listen to, they are phenomenal. Empty Sky, Elton John, Honky Chateau, Madman Across the Water , Tumbleweed Connection, each it's own masterpiece. Many will suggest Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - a brilliant LP as well. Can't go wrong with Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
If I were you, I would delve into the genius of Elton John and Bernie Taupin - early years first, you'll understand why as you take this amazing journey. ✌❤

“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” gets my vote for next. But “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Just The Piano Player” is a personal favorite because I listened to the 8-track dozens of times as a child.
Love that album, too! "There's a fly in the window, a dog in the yard, and a year since I saw you..." Ir's a shame that album doesn't get more attention.

Your best starting point based on variety and quality is "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (1973), but everything from 1970-1976 is excellent, top notch and fantastic. He also had many good and some great albums through the decades since.
Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water his first three albums were unique for their time and well worth checking out. There were many hits after those albums but for me those three were an incredible introduction.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a great album to start with.
Elton John was extremely influential for a wide variety of musicians, from pop to hard rock.
Elton had some pretty popular music later but his '70s music is *the* classic Elton John, and is several levels above his later stuff in my opinion.
Elton John wrote a lot of the soundtracks for Disney movies so you probably have heard more Elton John than you think. One of my personal Elton John favorites is a dual song called, "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" but there are SO many hits that are fantastic by him. It's a very deep rabbit hole.

The album called Tumbleweed Connection is a great album to start with from Elton John but having said that, many of his albums from the 1970's are really great albums and most are well worth an album review. Being a huge Elton John fan and personally owning all of his albums from the 70's, I can tell you that his music is beyond great and it is hard to go wrong with his great music! Dive Deep, you will be glad you did!😊

Awesome reaction - it's wonderful to see just how much the music and lyrics clearly resonates inside your soul. That is a wonderful feeling and experience which makes music such a universal language. I saw Elton John live in London about 8 years ago. He was absolutely amazing. He can still knock his songs out live to a level that is so close to the original recording it's insane.
My favorite song. I was so happy that it was for me, and for my first girlfriend. You can tell everybody that it's for you.
Elton John is one of the greatest artists of all time. I second either Madman Across the Water or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Piano player. Great voice. Had a great writer. He was a monster in the 70's. Few equals in number of great songs. Just about impossible to recommend what else of his to listen to next. I have a dozen or more favorites, and only a few may overlap favorites of other fans. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is my fave song, although a tough call. The story is timeless.
You can never (ever) go wrong with Elton. I would suggest covering his discography in the order they were released. Starting with the Elton John album (BTW, his very first album is called "Empty Sky"), but most people are not aware of this album. If you wanted to cover a song from that album I'd recommend: Skyline Pigeon. Anyway, you'll get a much better perspective of his music going in chronological order - at least through the 70s.
BTW, I'll add a key thing that makes me absolutely LOVE Elton... the Band. His band (Nigel, Dee, Davey, and Elton) are some of the most underrated musicians ever IMHO. I can see why since Elton is such a big name and brand. (Oh, and pay attention to the background vocals, Dee, Davey, and Nigel - kick ass on them.)
You definitely need to watch the movie Rocketman. It's the story of Elton from a child through his first 15 years in the music industry.
You could hardly have picked a better song to start with. One of his beautifullest ballads (and certainly one of the simplest and easiest to understand). EJ owned the charts in the mid 70s.

Tumbleweed Connection is probably his best album (at least to me). His early stuff is better when he wasn’t so self consciously pop.
When I was young, 20 yrs old, I had a lovely boyfriend who got me a pretty little promise ring, and he wooed me with flowers and romantic walks along the water's edge.. and this was *the song*.. that he said was our song because it's my song lol. ^_^ There's nothing like young love. xo ^_^
