I’m just here for the comments! Perhaps Violetta wasn’t her greatest role, but Fleming is a serious artist with a fantastic voice. The critics blasting her here are the same ones that genuflect at Callas’s every burp and fart.
@@vicky-yx4dyFleming great? She has her moments but is just a moderately good singer who lazily disrespects her music. Comparing her to Callas is like comparing coca-cola to champagne.
@@philipc67. Sorry. I must disagree with you! I think Fleming is GREAT! I LOVE her voice!! How can one compare Callas and Fleming?? Callas is dead. Fleming is still captivating us with her fantastic voice at 65!

Agree- absolutely not her best here....but like many live performances, the voice is not recorded well and the sound is distorted and unclear, much like the picture -. Even the pitch on the final orchestral chords waver ever so slightly- Listen to her SONG TO THE MOON- it is a live concert reading with the BBC Orchestra-. Not only does she sing the aria itself rather badly, but her high E flat is horrible. There's not much to save here. She is suffering so much and so visibly that she doesn't even have a second to think about playing her character. The way she paces the stage erratically with her face completely contracted is painful even for the viewer. Her face at 1:42 is litteraly : "Another second and I'd have died." 😄
That's the dumbest thing anyone has ever said. Tebaldi never sang the Eb. Countless other superb sopranos have never interpolated the Eb. The aria isn't about the damn high not. And what's more, her interpretation suffers here because she goes for the Eb and it doesn't come out right.
@@mattslipp Tebaldi should never have gone near this role. She was a straight up verismo singer with no training and capacity to sing bel canto whatsoever.
It's always a thrill when sopranos sing the "ADDED" final high note but they really don't have to sing it it was never really written it was just added by some soprano later on.

One of my absolute favorites coming from an 80 yr old
Ohhh wow thank you so much for this! Is there a full version somewhere?
