Not only does she sing the aria itself rather badly, but her high E flat is horrible. There's not much to save here. She is suffering so much and so visibly that she doesn't even have a second to think about playing her character. The way she paces the stage erratically with her face completely contracted is painful even for the viewer. Her face at 1:42 is litteraly : "Another second and I'd have died." 😄

I suggest you take a chamber orchestra, then you have the right background music for this miserable singing. The excursion into high drama doesn't suit Nylund at all and KFV with the usual resonance-less unwinding of sound. What an embarrassing pair of heroes.

Waltraud Meier sings here at the end of a long and important career. If earlier in her career she delivered more impeccably vocalized Ortruds, what we hear here, especially the phrasing on the very final note, is the summation of a lifetime of musical knowledge. And for that we can be grateful.
