China’s Favorite Xiaomi EV, on Market Just 1 Day, Turns to Junk: Hits Curb, Both Right Wheels Burst

  • However, problems quickly emerged. On March 29 in Xiamen, Fujian Province, a video of a purple Xiaomi SU7 sports car hitting a curb and bursting both right wheels sparked heated discussion. The front wheel hub was also deformed and damaged, and the rear wheel area sunk, indicating possible damage to the air suspension. Another angle showed the entire car leaning to the right.
Regarding this incident, staff from the Xiaomi Car Distribution Center responded that the vehicle involved was a test drive car, and recently there had been a large number of test drives with complex road conditions. Adding that conclusions will be released after investigation.

To be fair, that loss of control was just driver aggression being greater than adhesion. Hard acceleration through a turn while suffering from painful lack of driver skill and control.

Granted the inexperienced driver over corrected, but this is supposed to be a new car with technology and new tires on it. I am flat out trying to get the back end of my Lexus out with the traction control button off. Even with it off it still limits you playing in the wet.

The driver seemed enthusiastic but we can't really know just from that clip. I'd expect an AWD, electric vehicle with modern traction control to be able to correct for that, but this is a car made by a cellphone company that just started making cars. It seems like the weight distribution is poor or the driver aids aren't working. The clip reminds me of a 70's Porsche 911 in its death pendulum phase.

    • @williamstearns7490
      @williamstearns7490 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jimmyjakes1823 as others mentioned, he likely turned off the traction control and driver aids for a more “sporty” experience.
And if he didn’t have the hammer down powering hard through the turn any slide he experienced would have gently left him pointing at a 1 to 3 o’clock position after coming to an embarrassing stop. But he kept his foot down, lost traction, overcompensated, briefly gained traction and acceleration, overcompensated again, before the curb ended his lesson in Newtonian physics.
The car itself is probably Harbor Freight quality engineering that I would never buy, never drive even as an airport rental, and never trust to provide adequate protection in an accident.
But even in a Ferrari, some drivers have obviously watched too much Fast and Furious, played too many games, suffer from way too much self-confidence in their car handling abilities, and thought “how hard can it be? Watch this…”
The exact scenario in the video happens here in the US every Friday and Saturday night all across the nation as swollen asshats put their brand new rides into curbs, ditches, other cars, and parking lot light poles trying to drift and power slide without actually know how, let alone competently recover from any unexpected loss of control issues.
And that’s here. In China, where drivers sucks at the best of times, I’m betting that anyone who hasn’t been coached in Kart racing as a kid, and decides to get aggressive with their car will soon find themselves having a difficult conversation with their insurance company.

Fully agree that this clip is 100% a driver error. There are lot’s of similar examples out there, cars leaving a car meeting and crashing in the same fashion. It’s just a combination of horsepower over brainpower, combined with a lack of skills. Very powerful AWD cars have a RWD bias, if you provoke them, this is what you get. The unexperienced driver may like to blame it on the car, after smashing the wall, he might think the rear suspension broke resulting in a crash… whilst it is the other way around, the suspension broke as a result of the impact. I like this channel though, it’s somewhat funny, bashing the Chinese all the time. But I definitely take it with a grain of salt and don’t believe all stories. Just as I don’t believe this to be a crappy car. I genuinely think Porsche/Volkswagen won’t be able to compete with this level of pricing and development on the long run. I have an Audi E-tron GT, it’s not worth twice the price let alone three times that price… Xiaomi has an enormous margin to fix whatever is needed to comfortably beat da Germanz. Ain’t that obvious? (Not to my liking, but it is what it is).

The fish-tailing of the car out of the intersection turn was clearly driver error. It was obvious the driver was accelerating as they turned. trying to blame the manufacturer is a hell of a feat of mental gymnastics. Similarly, hitting the curb with your car is bound to bend your rims, especially if they are cast aluminum or an aluminum alloy. I usually enjoy the content on this channel but this "article" is clearly an example of smearing.

    • @jimmyjakes1823

The car that hit the curb clearly had total suspension failure. It's hard to say just from the clip but generally most modern vehicles should be able to correct themselves in a skid under those circumstances. Modern EVs have driver aids and are usually AWD precisely because of the high torque. SU7 are mostly RWD, which seems dumb for a mass market car in a country of inexperienced drivers.

There is a major factor that people and manufacturers are forgetting. Driving an ev is not the same as driving a standard petrol car. The acceleration is instant and a lot of people are not prepared for this and cause over steering to correct the car and end up crashing into something. There needs to be an awareness of this to prevent this from happening.

3:13 Honestly, I feel like that crash was more likely caused by whoever's behind the wheel being terrible at driving.
From the perspective of a sim racer with 6 years of experience, it seems like they gave it too much throttle, and the car oversteered to the right. They then lifted off the throttle, causing the car to snap oversteer due to the weight transfer. A similar reason behind why you see Mustangs crashing when they leave car meets.
My final verdict: Wasn't the car's fault. Whoever was driving needs to learn how to drive.

    Few things:
    1. I don't know what the accident looked like, but if you smash into a curb, you're going to pop your tires and destroy your rims. Plus, suspension getting damaged in an accident is expected. What's not expected is the air suspension randomly failing for no reason, which you can see happened here: th-cam.com/users/shortsNIpnIdTRYzU
    2. Most models of the SU7 are rear wheel drive, meaning that if you floor it while turning, you will basically initiate a power slide and if you don't know what to do, you will end up in a wall. That's why there are infinite videos of Mustangs and Cameros crashing due to people trying to show off.
    3. In the comparison between the Xiaomi and the Tesla, we have no idea what the speed of the collision was. The Tesla seemed to have just driven through the garage wall at slow speeds, while we don't know if the Xiaomi clipped the other car at high speeds or if it was just a tap. Without the conditions being the same between both vehicles, we can't conclude which one is actually better built. Like if you look at other accidents of Teslas rear ending other cars, the amount of damage varies significantly.
    4. How dare you mention panel gaps on the Xiaomi without talking about how long quality control has been on Teslas. Like I recently watched a video about a comparison by Throttle House between a used Tesla with 50,000 miles and a new one, and the old one had plastic trim falling apart and the seats were collapsed and many other problems. My Nissan has 250,000 miles and nothing's falling apart to that degree.
    5. Copying in the car industry or any industry for that matter is pretty common. But I mean, there's only so many ways to make a sporty looking sedan. To be honest, the Xiaomi's headlights immediately reminded me of Mclaren. But I mean, look at the Chrysler 300 and then look at a Rolls Royce.
    6. If you put a deposit on something, it's pretty typical that you won't get it back. For example, if you put a deposit on a college and then decide you don't want to go there, you usually don't get your deposit back. If you put a deposit on a car at a dealership and then cancel the order, you usually won't get your deposit back. Just don't buy something big without thinking it through completely.
So idk the Xiaomi looks pretty ok to me.

RWD on a high torque EV in a country of bad drivers seems colossally stupid. Also it's the 1st car from a cell phone company so who knows how messed up weight distribution, driver aids (if any) are. Air suspension? Lol, seems like they've got some bugs to work out. It's from a chinese company so product support will be non-existent. Advertising a 7 day cool off period and then saying it starts from the moment the order is finalized, which is effectively when you place your order (lol) should give buyers an indication of the sort of warranty and service support they're going to get for their cars. Copying? Dude, it's an exact replica with reworked fascias. The profiles are an exact match when you line them up.

    • @buntafujiwara3289
      @buntafujiwara3289 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@jimmyjakes1823 There's going to be bad drivers in basically any country. Like in the US, there's always teenagers in Mustangs thinking they're Ken Block and smashing into a guardrail, and sometimes it seems like every other person on the road is on their phone. There's a reason why most mainstream cars are front wheel drive. But EV companies tend to do rear wheel drive because it's a characteristic of sports cars and they want their cars to seem cool or whatever. But that's not really unique to Xiaomi and the driver's still at fault here.
Also, while Xiaomi is new, as long as their engineers have experience and knowledge, the fundamentals should be fine. I guess we'll see about any bugs or problems when the reviews start rolling out. But with the air suspension, we don't really know if it has any issues yet. But if you watch the video link, you'll see that other companies can be pretty bad at air suspension, so Xiaomi wouldn't be alone even if they did have problems.
And with the looks, while the shape is similar to a Taycon, the headlights and taillights and interior are all different so I wouldn't say it's a copy. I would say there definitely has been some inspiration, but then, once again, look at Chrysler. The Chrysler 300's shape, headlights, taillights, and grill are all reminiscent of a Rolls Royce Ghost. Xiaomi's definitely not on that level of copying.
We really don't know good how Xiaomi's warranty and service is going to be, but I do remember a news article where a Tesla owner had I think their wheel or something fall apart days after getting the car, yet Tesla claimed it as their fault and refused to fix it.
What I'm trying to say is that it's too early to immediately jump out and say that this car is terrible or whatever. I think this channel in general really likes to just shit on everything about China. While China is definitely not perfect, and many aspects are a lot worse than here in America that I'm not going to mention because the government might kidnap me and throw me into a reeducation camp, a lot of videos on this channel either don't have a lot of evidence, like this one, or are taken out of context. Like there are many videos talking about how Chinese EVs catch on fire a lot, but it neglects to mention anything about Teslas catching on fire or even Chevy Bolts literally being recalled due to a defect that would make them combust. From my research, the number of fire incidents per # of vehicles sold is roughly the same between Chinese and non-Chinese EVs. And I think this says a lot not only about this TH-cam channel, but many news sources in general. News sources rush to report every time an electric vehicle catches on fire, but they never say anything when a conventional gas car combusts, or mention anything about how gas vehicles actually have a higher chance of fire than electric vehicles since they literally work through internal combustion. They do this because electric vehicle fires bring more attention and clicks to the news company. Talking about how dangerous electric vehicles are is a lot more eye-catching than talking about how electric vehicles are actually safe, but this leads to misinformation, as many people think EVs are more dangerous than gas cars.
Back to this video, a lot of the "evidence" it has like the SU7s crashing are really not proof for the Xiaomi car being bad. Plus, even the criticisms that are legit are not limited to Xiaomi, and blasting them for it while not mentioning other car companies is kind of unfair.

There is every possibility these incidents are driver error as another problem with the system in China is that people are not taught how to drive properly before being issued a license. The driving standard is therefore pretty low in general.

Overall, I think this video is a bit unfair as no matter which new model is released onto the streets, there will be new buyers who have more money than sense and accidents will happen. I'm not a fan of Chinese car brands, but let's be serious, the indifference of buyers to their own properties and especially to others is proverbial. When you drive the car over the normal limits, does it hit curbs, walls and go through potholes at high speed, does it resist like a tank? This is about carelessness in use but also exaggerated expectations of a product. I'm already fed up when I see a lot of Chinese shouting and waving aggressively, pointing their fingers and foaming at the mouth, dissatisfied with some product or service. Cheating is second nature in Chinese society. Common sense would train us to look with circumspection at the products from China, but also at the countless complaints posted on social media, impossible to verify their veracity and correctness. It is a circus that we must stay away from.

I live in China part time and a lot of their cars are high-quality and reasonable. Always check sources best to live in the country for at least six months to experience and get real data.

What's presented here doesn't seem like 'mass complaints' tbh, it's just people trolling a new car. Which isn't that out o sorts in the auto world. I was expecting some more egregious stuff, but it's just what could be bad handling and somewhat shoddy presentation and what looks to be theft in appearance. Nothing horrible really. Also not a good idea to name your car 'SU7', because you know...Robocop reference.

This issue with all EVs is going to be a global issue. BEVs have so much torque that it takes a skilled driver to handle that amount of instant power. It seems that the stability control could not keep up with the driver and the conditions. It's highly concerning that inexperienced drivers own these cars relying 100% on the software to keep them and us non-EV drivers safe.

The images you show are of accidents? How can this be car fault? And also, why would you put a deposit if you don't want the car?

People thought that they were buying a Porsche Taycan for £33k, and are surprised when it's an inferior piece of garbage.
