I saw him with Whitesnake during the “purple” here in Michigan . AMAZING! I loved that purple reflective guitar so I wrote to him the next day and asked him how it was made, and wrote right back and said it was extremely heavy because the guy who made it, actually glued pieces of glass on the surface of the body to make it reflective. He said he doesn’t play that guitar very long during the show because of the weight. Cool!

The fact that ripped that really heavy pentatonic lick just like Joel cements your legendary status as an equal to these guys that the lessons are based around. Nice playing, Dave!!

All my years of playing, you're the best teacher I've had, and I have learned the most from you. You don't waste time, and get right to what is important. Thank you SIR!

I remember Joel playing in cover bands in the South Chicago suburbs back in the late 80s. He was amazing even back then, had that six finger tapping technique mastered before anyone else I knew. I used to be blown away watching him play, glad to see that he made it. He paid his dues for certain.

Thank you sooo much David! I‘ve been a fan of Joel for a few months now and he is maybe my personal favorite and my guitar hero. He is not also a monster of a player, he is a very nice guy too.
As far as the bonus lick goes, i can imagine, that he picks the first string an then goes into hybrid picking with the rest of the strings. On the high e string he does hammer ons and pull offs i think. So basicly just what you did with the sweeppicking converted into that hybrid picking.
When you want to get more into his hybrid picking ideas, you can check out his solo from a little song called “slither“ where he explains afterwards, how he was playing his ideas and his aproach for the solo.

He also played live with Brett and TJ Helmerich

Thanks, David! I've heard Joel's name over the years, but I'm not super familiar with his playing! Thanks for this Lesson! I brought my fingers (as you suggested), but I don't think they'll do me much good!

Lol! Same here with the fingers comment. Joel is a badass guitarist/instructor. I found his instructional dvd on Amazon for under $10 and damn is it a great little dvd of about 2 hours worth of lessons. Dave nails some of his stuff with this awesome lesson.

Got to this one a bit late, but just wanted to say thanks for covering some of Joel's stuff.... Joel Hoekstra and Guthrie Govan are easily my two favorite players in post 2000 era guitar. I did get to catch Joel live on one of the TSO tours. The guy is just frightening live. Especially the five and six finger tapped stuff and hybrid picking. His stuff is always fun to try and get under the fingers.

David, I had to come back to this because I really wanted to learn these licks. The guitar tech here in Phoenix actually has Joel's picture on their wall showing him playing the guitar they made him. I saw him with Trans-Siberian Orchestra years ago. Killer show. I'm curious why this was tuned down a whole step. Just wondering. Thanks!

Love the lesson! Joel Hoekstra is amazing. I like your interpretation of the bonus lick. I wondered: Do you do the hammer ons from nowhere because you like the sound more or do you just feel uncomfortable with sweeping upwards?
