    Thank you so much! This is exactly what was wrong. I never would have thought to look at the lid switch. I ended up having to unscrew the switch, when I did I saw that the switch box was coming apart because the glue that held it together had come loose. I hot glued the switch box back together, screwed it back in place, and now it's working. One less thing my husband has to fix.

      a couple of small wire ties around the switch box guarantees the glue will never come undone again. Mine has been solid 5+ years now.

    I should have known to check this! Thank you so much. My mom's Kenmore 80 series did the same thing maybe 15 years ago, and a friend's did the same thing maybe 10 years ago, and yet I still managed not to think to check the lid switch when mine stopped working. I now remember that my friend fixed theirs with hot glue and a ballpoint pen cap.

    God bless you exponentially Sir for sharing this video! I'm a type of guy who's not really mechanically inclined but I'm learning quickly. I had no idea why our Kenmore Series 80 was having the same problem as yours did but I checked the lid switch and it had fallen apart somehow. With the washer being over 15 yrs. old, I thought I was going to have to buy another washing machine and I was guesstimating that a appliance repairman (person) would have cost me about the same as a new one but thanks to you, I believe you've saved me hundreds of dollars and good on you for that!

    The switch was fried on mine, so I fixed it by shorting the leads. The switch is normally open, meaning if it fails it shouldn't spin. But on mine, the spring inside failed and welded itself between the contacts of the switch, making it normally closed. No wonder it would spin with the lid open!

  • @leavemealone8139

    It worked! I had already drained the washer with a plastic cup and pulled it away from the wall- hoping to find a reset switch or something. I decided to check youtube before I disconnected anything, and I found this video. Literally, I stuck a screwdriver into the little spring slot and the machine worked immediately. It has since stopped a couple of times, but I just stick in the driver and the machine goes on its way. At least I know the part that needs to be fixed- instead of paying for a service call to trouble-shoot. Good job, bud. Thanks for the video :)

    This help me fix my machine that wasn’t draining. Thank you very much! My switch wasn’t fully broken, the switch just came apart. I tied some wire around it and not the switch holds together. Put the machine back together and the door pin now makes contact and triggers the switch again.

    Thank you very much. I wondered if the little press in tab was the issue but nothing happened when I pushed it with my finger. But stick a screwdriver in there and sure enough it started right up and drained. I am thankful for this video. I thought the problem was most likely in the turn dial mechanism but thanks to you it is much easier work around

    Our Kenmore 80 series stopped tonight, unexpectedly, as we were packing for a trip out of state --- yikes!! washer wouldn't drain, just like you describe in your video. I noticed that the screws holding the safety switch tab were loose. had the boyfriend tighten the screws, he set the cycle back to Rinse, and this time it drained properly!!

    • @acme663ryo
      @acme663ryo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Asim Nasim You're welcome. Ours eventually died when the motor coupling tore loose. I pulled it out for an old used one someone gave me, a Kirkland brand from Costco. Turns out that this washer while several inches wider than the Kirkland when I dumped it over outside it is all dead air. The new washer is narrower and shallower but the basket is the same inside. I think if it ever fails on you don't spend much to fix it.

    This video led me in the right direction. The lid switch in my Kenmore is activated by the right side hinge, hidden within the housing. The screws had come loose and the hinge no longer contacted the switch. Thanks.

  • @blacklabel416
    @blacklabel416 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's fucking hilarious, it worked on mine too. EDIT: Adding to this.. unplug the washer and take the two screws out right above where that little switch flapper is, make sure you're holding the entire assembly otherwise it might fall into the inside of the housing. Pull the switch assembly out and inspect it, mine had cracked and opened up causing it to not engage properly. Wrapped a ziptie around mine and threw some electrical tape on there for good measure and it works again! If the switch is completely pooched, do what the other guy in the comments said and just wire the bastard together permanently.

    Thank you! I did both things you showed in the video, but no luck, so I opened it up. There was a zip tie around the switch. We bought ours used and repaired and I am guessing that what broke for the original owners was this switch (specifically, the glue seal failing) and then the shop we bought it from did the zip tie trick. I opened up the switch and one of the contacts was broken off. ---> I ended up cutting the two black wires and wire-nutting them together.

    • @acme663ryo
      @acme663ryo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a little post sticking down from the underside of the lid? It will stick into a corresponding hole in the top of the washer when closed, that is the switch. Should make a nice clear *click* when the two meet. Switch can come loose, tab can break off, that's what I am feeling for. Unplug first.

    This is a good but its titled washing machine not draining, but in this case what is happening it works then it shakes the lid up so that the switch would open and not allow it to proceed thru its entire cycle. Machine not draining is more so with a drain pump or kinked hose. So its kind of titled wrong.

    • @acme663ryo
      @acme663ryo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All machines I have owned or worked on will not drain and spin with the lid open. It is 100% true of this particular Kenmore. If the switch is bad the machine thinks the lid is open, thus the switch is keeping it from draining. Your information is wrong.
