Age of Kings is inspired by Age of Empires 2, yes :) all the buildings are from that game, you have the big castles, a few small houses at the start, a barracks and an archery range, and even a little dock. Fascinating that you're getting every single reference so far, even the obscure ones! You even realized the final building in "At World's End" is a spaceship! "Below Zero" looks nothing like Nirvana, because it was the first map I ever finished for the WAD. I didn't even know where to place it at first. The fact the beginnings kind of line up (with almost all the health being located in front of where you start) was a coincidence. And funny you mention wanting to do this type of concept too, because I had the idea for a map like this for a bit over a decade. I just didn't go through with this, because, and get this - Doom doesn't have convincing ice textures :P what ended up putting me off initially really helped sell the idea in the end for this project. The secret you couldn't get to is a timed one, by the way. It's a timed door, the ceiling melts and crashes down.
I had a feeling that's what it was. It was pretty generous not to actually mark it as a secret. I guess that would count as a super secret or something.
Sweet! :D It probably helps that I've been thinking about AoE2 a lot recently (for some reason). Ahh, that explains why the secret was so rewarding. That's definitely better than hiding a single berserk pack behind a timed secret wall like what Legacy of Rust's first map does. :P I think "Below Zero" is one of those cases where the name of the map definitely helps with immersion. That said, the textures you picked still do a lot of lifting. Despite the lack of actual ice textures, the ones you picked work really well to fully sell the concept.
Okay this is an extremely geeky shot and probably completely wrong but... Nirvana, grunge band aside, is one of the Planes in AD&D, which of course had more than a little influence on DOOM and DOOM 2. Limbo is _another_ outer plane, and is often described as a cold, inhospitable place. Maybe that's where Below Zero got its inspiration? Nirvana->Limbo plus hostile environment? I mean, probably not but maybe.
It's called "Below Zero" because you're in an Arctic base and it's freezing outside :P It has nothing to do with Nirvana, actually. Many maps, like it and "The Mall" were placed randomly in the map list, because I had made them pretty early on.
You're somewhat right about Z. It was developed for the Amiga first, but never came out on it - the Amiga was dead as a commercial machine by the time it got to release time, so it ended up coming out on PC instead.
XD Nah, just had to take a bit of a breather from content for a while. I'm going to be getting back to the Greytale series fairly soon, followed soon by the usual random selections.

Specter is waiting to see what "Gotcha" is going to look like and I'm here waiting to see what will the BEST map going to look like - "The Chasm".
It's a cool idea to have a "hostile enviroment" requiring a radiation suit. "UAC Ultra" Map 01 does that too, it's neat.
1:00 - I remember Z, the robots calling you names if you lost hehe! >

Ah yeah, that makes sense given that it came out in 1996. For some reason I thought it came out in 1993/1994, heh.
33:19 Lol this kind of commentary is exactly *why* we watch your videos xD
And to make sure he doesn't go totally bonkers... :P
😊❤️
Happy Thanksgiving!
21:14 nah it's gotcha part 2
Below Zero reminds me of the harmful underwater sections from Tetanus.
Just like in the original Nirvana, the health hub is completely useless.
I did a tribute to Gotcha. But I did 4 platforms dropping 2 of each, epic infight.
did you hang up D!Zoned because of me, lmao
XD
