Nope, ever since I played hl1, I was wondering on when was it set, and what events coincided with it's settings, especially 9/11 and the Afghanistan/Iraq War, because the US military response to Black Mesa incident is VERY lackluster, there must be something else going on that caused them a shortage of military resources.

The Resonance Cascade and Black Mesa Incident both happened atleast after January 2, 2002 due to one of the very unknown posters in Half Life 2. There is actually a poster in Half life 2 with George Bush on it, and the poster directly mentions both September 11th and the date of January 2, 2002. If you don't believe me, look up "Making the World Safe for Terrorism, George Bush Crimethinc Poster" and then look up similar photos of it in Half life 2, you could also find it yourself at the plaza at the beginning of Half Life 2, it is right against the monolith that the propaganda screen is on.
Unfortunately, there are specific post-9/11 posters about events that happened directly as a result of 9/11 in Half-Life 2 decals so it actually DID definitively happen.

i think even if combine didn't invade before 9/11 could happen, i think the chances of it happening would be already low due to the black mesa incident. the alien invasion and portal storms would destabilize any number of events or conditions that could lead to 9/11. people would be busy fighting aliens, not each other

New Mexico is warm, sure, but it still experiences winter. There's no way that it would get that hot, that early in the morning in December.
Small issue at 15:17; the military (usually) doesnt change out handbooks until absolutely necessary, even more likely that it won't be for smaller, specialized detachments like the H.E.C.U. So, making the assumption the notes were made in the year of publishment is pretty massive assumption.
In half life 2 episode 1 alyx makes a comment talking about Gordon and barney in a vent looking for kleiner's keys, witch must mean that Gordon has established a large relationship with the black mesa personnel.
I feel like the notes from Shepherd would help your case if they knew that Gordon was starting and maybe his first day was May 16th whenever he was doing the HEV training, then maybe somehow they knew that he was part of the Cascade but didn't know if it would start the same day he started working there or if it would happen at a later time.
I honestly always believed they invaded pre-9/11. Whether it was months or days prior. If it would’ve been post 9/11, there would be slightly older newspaper stories, and media documenting such a catastrophic event (prior to the 7 Hour War of course). Plus it’s interesting to imagine the Financial District skyline with Twin Towers intact during a Combine occupation, that’s if they didn’t destroy the Towers themselves. Also who doesn’t want those beautiful Towers still dominating the skyline.
None of the days on that calendar have been crossed off, so we don’t know it’s showing the current month. Opposing Force isn’t canon, nor is Blue Shift. The training manual’s dates are heavily relied on here.

Portal 2 art book mentions events of Portal 1 happening "not long" after events of Half Life1, and Portal 1 takes place on 2010. It seems like per Laidlaw, it was 2003, but per Wolpaw, it's 2009.
The only issue I find with the dates 15-16th December is the fact that there is not a single Christmas reference in Half Life 1. Sure, one might assume a sterile research facility wouldn't put up lights and mistletoe, but given the hours of casual NPC dialogue in the game, one would also assume at least one mention of the encroaching holidays about to be ruined.. I would rather place the time of the Black Mesa incident some time just after Christmas of 2000, when all the talk of it usually simmers down in real life. The actual seven hour war might have been weeks after the fact, as the Combine would probably have had quarrels with G-man's employers over Xen.

It happened in 2003, Gordon atleast arrived in New Mexico for his job in 2001-2002 as the Black Mesa Incident happened in the early 2000's (2000-2004/5) AND the Resonance Cascade happened on May 16th.
Waxing and waning moons are different. The picture that you showed of the moon in black mesa more closely aligns with the waxing gibbous of december 6th, rather than the waning phase of the moon. This is an important difference. This also puts the resonance cascade at December 6th
This really made me realize how messed up the half-life timeline is. Ive accepted May 16th as the date of the experiment for years but im not even sure where exactly that comes from anymore

There is absolutely no way in hell that him putting on the HEV suit, ruining Magnusson’s casserole and getting into the test chamber lasted until 4:33 PM. In game it takes like 20 minutes at most. So that date is invalid. Marc Laidlaw also explicitly said that he did not take Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Decay into consideration when writing Half-Life 2. Plus these games were made by Gearbox Software, not Valve, so it hinders the canonicity of these details
If the Black Mesa incident did take place around December 15th, Don't you think there would have been some Christmas decorations set up around Black Mesa during the incident if that were the case? Even government facilities decorate for the holidays.
portal 2 and half life 2 is actually connected since in episode 2 they showed us the borealis thing in the tv. now i think that portal2 took place in a long long time after "2001" because in the afterwards of portal 2's introduction to the game. the announcer says "you have been asleep for 9999-" and because aperture science is so frickin advanced that i think it took very very much until the resonance cascade and in portal 1. in the glados bossfight, glados SPECIFICALLY states that she is the only thing seperating you (the player) from "Them" Or which is the combine. My personal headcanon is that the time-line goes: 200X: HL1, 201X: Portal 1, HL:Alyx,* 202X: HL2+Episodes, Portal 2. This way we can have the culminating crossover event between HL3 and Portal 3, where you play as Gordon and Chell in their respective games, with an overarching storyline where either the gravity gun or the portal gun have to be used to destroy or displace the Borealis for further study respectively, depending on player choice. *the final scene in HL:Alyx happens concurrently with HL2: Episode 2.

I feel like the notes from Shepherd would help your case if they knew that Gordon was starting and maybe his first day was May 16th whenever he was doing the HEV training, then maybe somehow they knew that he was part of the Cascade but didn't know if it would start the same day he started working there or if it would happen at a later time.
I honestly always believed they invaded pre-9/11. Whether it was months or days prior. If it would’ve been post 9/11, there would be slightly older newspaper stories, and media documenting such a catastrophic event (prior to the 7 Hour War of course).
Plus it’s interesting to imagine the Financial District skyline with Twin Towers intact during a Combine occupation, that’s if they didn’t destroy the Towers themselves. Also who doesn’t want those beautiful Towers still dominating the skyline.
None of the days on that calendar have been crossed off, so we don’t know it’s showing the current month.
Opposing Force isn’t canon, nor is Blue Shift. The training manual’s dates are heavily relied on here.

Portal 2 art book mentions events of Portal 1 happening "not long" after events of Half Life1, and Portal 1 takes place on 2010.
It seems like per Laidlaw, it was 2003, but per Wolpaw, it's 2009.

The only issue I find with the dates 15-16th December is the fact that there is not a single Christmas reference in Half Life 1. Sure, one might assume a sterile research facility wouldn't put up lights and mistletoe, but given the hours of casual NPC dialogue in the game, one would also assume at least one mention of the encroaching holidays about to be ruined..
I would rather place the time of the Black Mesa incident some time just after Christmas of 2000, when all the talk of it usually simmers down in real life. The actual seven hour war might have been weeks after the fact, as the Combine would probably have had quarrels with G-man's employers over Xen.

It happened in 2003, Gordon atleast arrived in New Mexico for his job in 2001-2002 as the Black Mesa Incident happened in the early 2000's (2000-2004/5) AND the Resonance Cascade happened on May 16th.

Waxing and waning moons are different. The picture that you showed of the moon in black mesa more closely aligns with the waxing gibbous of december 6th, rather than the waning phase of the moon. This is an important difference. This also puts the resonance cascade at December 6th
This really made me realize how messed up the half-life timeline is. Ive accepted May 16th as the date of the experiment for years but im not even sure where exactly that comes from anymore

14:09 it should be noted that, even though Marc Laidlaw’s notes even specify the exact hour it took place, it just contradicts Half-Life 1, because in it Gordon arrives late for work at exactly 8:47 AM. There is absolutely no way in hell that him putting on the HEV suit, ruining Magnusson’s casserole and getting into the test chamber lasted until 4:33 PM. In game it takes like 20 minutes at most. So that date is invalid.
Marc Laidlaw also explicitly said that he did not take Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Decay into consideration when writing Half-Life 2. Plus these games were made by Gearbox Software, not Valve, so it hinders the canonicity of these details

If the Black Mesa incident did take place around December 15th, Don't you think there would have been some Christmas decorations set up around Black Mesa during the incident if that were the case? Even government facilities decorate for the holidays.
portal 2 and half life 2 is actually connected since in episode 2 they showed us the borealis thing in the tv. now i think that portal2 took place in a long long time after "2001" because in the afterwards of portal 2's introduction to the game. the announcer says "you have been asleep for 9999-" and because aperture science is so frickin advanced that i think it took very very much until the resonance cascade and in portal 1. in the glados bossfight, glados SPECIFICALLY states that she is the only thing seperating you (the player) from "Them" Or which is the combine. So then Yes they prevented 9/11 i just wasted my time while doing research. (rip eli vance)

portal 2 is set WAY after half life 2, imo portal 1 and half life 2 are the ones that are connected
@@tdfhd We don't exactly know how the time-line works between the games. That 50.000 years thing always sounded weird to me. My personal headcanon is that the time-line goes:
200X: HL1,
201X: Portal 1, HL:Alyx,*
202X: HL2+Episodes, Portal 2.
This way we can have the culminating crossover event between HL3 and Portal 3, where you play as Gordon and Chell in their respective games, with an overarching storyline where either the gravity gun or the portal gun have to be used to destroy or displace the Borealis for further study respectively, depending on player choice.
*the final scene in HL:Alyx happens concurrently with HL2: Episode 2.
