So does turning on emergency heat to "enable", turn on the Emergency heat, or does it just allow the system to use emergency heat automatically when it calls for it due to low temp, defrost cycle etc?

Conversely does putting emergency heat to "disable" prevent the system from automatically using emergency heat when it feels the need, or is that just more of a "auto" setting?
Also, if the system is using the emergency coils automatically due to low temps of defrost cycle, etc., will the thermostat tell me?

Enabling the emergency heat mode will turn on the heat strip if/when the heat pump is no longer able to overcome temperatures less than 35 degrees. If the heat pump stops working all together, then you would want to enable it for heat until the unit can be looked at or repaired by a qualified service. It's my understanding also that if you enable Emergency heat mode, it will only use that and run your utility bill up. So no, you should not have to enable it in the settings, it should kick on matically with the setting off.

It’s stupid to have to manually switch to emergency heat when outdoor gets into teens. You should be able to set a trigger point then let the controller turn it on when temps get below that point.
