Thanks for this video I always wondered about the inner workings of a VVT sprocket.I came acroos this same problem serviceing a replacement engine for my 2011 Buick Regal with LAF engine After assembly the exhaust cam came up 180 degrees off even though the timing marks all aligned ! Lucky nothing got damaged before I caught it !
My exhaust cam moves, using wrench about an 1/8 turn before gear turns. Shouldn't it be locked to gear with no oil pressure pushing on lock pin? Thanks Kory.
@@professorlugnut I notice when you wiggled the inner ring, there was a slight amount of play. Is there a little bit of backlash between the cam and the phaser? Looks like a .010 tolerance or so, of backlash. I am replacing a camshaft now and was wondering if the slight backlash was normal! Thanks!
I replaced the timing chain on my 2010 Equinox with the 2.4. When it gets warm and I go to stop, I have to two foot it. One foot on the brake and the other to keep the idle up. I replaced the VVT solenoids and I get a code dor the exhaust every now and then. Could my issue be in the phasers since I didnt replace them? Thanks for the great info.
Yes, it could be getting stuck. So the cam phaser gives you the smooth idle and power of a performance cam. When it doesn't return to the smooth idle it's like you have the loopy idle of a performance camshaft.
Theoretically yes, but what i see most often is the aluminum where the two pieces slide against each other gets grooves and hangs up causing it to get stuck. so if it was only dirty it might work as a temporary solution but better to replace in the long run.
what does usully goes wrong with this? i have a 14 sonic giving me p0016 which usually means this things have gone sour, i don't know if i should try to fix them or just order new ones, i haven't taken them out yet so i don't know whats wrong with them, car runs but with the usual symptoms of one or both gone bad

Whoa there partner, you almost stabbed us!!!
😂😂 yeah sorry about that was in a hurry!!
My 2020 Buick Enclave 3.6 VVT engine cam phaser failed at 68K miles. And yes I changed the oil with the proper recommended oil regularly.
There are some that fail early. And some that last way longer.
What was the mileage on that?
@@mambi74mileage was 135k
The four bolts on the backside of the cam phaser do you know what size bit driver that is
Thanks
I'm looking at this video because my 2013 equinox 2.4L is rattling on cold start up and when you're in gear
Might be the belt tensioner

yes it should be locked. sounds like time for Phasers.

@@professorlugnut I forgot to add that whens it's being stupid, it sounds like the old Volkswagen diesel at idle.
I appreciate your time. Thank you
@@VRMN8R yes like am old school v8 with a performance camshaft.
So u could take the phaser apart and clean it while on the cam shaft?

Hi, have a question. I have a 2013 malibu, do the camshaft phasers need to be unlocked before installation?
No
Hey mate, what are the torque settings on the five phaser bolts?
Not sure if they are available anywhere. I will have to check and see if I can find out.
@@professorlugnut That would be great mate. I can't seem to find the information anywhere
10 o clock and 2 0 clock position and Then the cam notchs at 7 and 5 o clock. So did you fix it?
this was a good phaser just wrong part number for the vehicle.
What chinsy weak looking Sprockets on those things, no wonder GM has so many Problems with it Timing Chains on their Engines

Usually I replace both phasers and the chain when i pull one apart.
