  • I recently carded my second DNF in a major marathon race in six months. I was in danger of feeling downcast, dejected and demotivated. However, I talked and thought myself through a five-step process which has left me feeling positive and excited for the running months ahead.
In this video I share what those five steps are that can take you from despair to optimism.

Cheers John. Great video with lots to reflect on.
Use the experiences of Manchester as a motivation at your marathon. There will always be far more regret over not finishing, than not hitting your time. A slow finish is always better than a no finish.
So many positives as you mentioned, and you have to pick those out and keep moving forward. You’re a brilliant runner and I know you’ll succeed.

You are doing great John, , last year 2023 I came 25th overall & 3rd in my age group in Hawks Bay Marathon with a time of 03:05:06 at the age of 59 but my first race this year, Wellington half marathon I came overall 25th from last because of an injury had to walk the whole thing, so we definitely have our bad day races, the good thing about the half marathon is I didn’t come completely last & the weather was awesome on the day, think you have to be as positive as you can whatever the time or outcome, if ya can enjoy the day you’ve already won, keep on keeping on 🥳✅👣👊🏼🚶🏽‍♂️👍🏼✌️🏃🏽‍♂️

Great parkrun today! I'm definitely like you - if it hasn't gone to plan, on to the next one and think about what I can do to be better. Mood follows action!

Great phrase. Did a PoV today with the Insta but it died 8:30 in. Will make something of it.

I've been using the Asics sub 3 hour marathon plan for a number of years now. Current PB 2:47:38 (Manchester 2022)

Well done John! Do you think you may be better suited to shorter distances than marathon? I certainly won’t be doing marathons for much longer.

Definitely. My 10k pb mapped to a 2:33 marathon but could only ever manage a 2:42. All in at Berlin for you then!

I hadn’t run for 13 days there due to a viral condition, my 10k went from 42 minutes to 46 gutted😢
