The reason why English dub didn't translate everything in English couse there's no English translation for it. And the Filipino touch of the animation whould be lost if they do so. Also that's the point so that people would be more curious and they will start to search for it. If you make a movie that every detail is already given what more could you offere?

    • @billharris7235
      @billharris7235 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Totally agree! As an American watching K- dramas, I appreciate when untranslatable terms like oppa, unnie, noona, etc are subbed as is. Seems to be the standard now, when it wasn't a few years ago. They would just insert the character's name instead of the honorific, which leaves context out. Also when a metaphor or idiom is translated verbatim, but the meaning is inserted in parentheses. A good sub is worth it's weight in gold!

Might have some flaws, but consider the fact that she's a beginner at this field of work. It just lies (probably) on the directing behind the scenes. Overall, I like all of them. (Haven't seen the Spanish dub of the trailer. Might check it out later. 😅)

Hi! Love watching your channel and as a Filipino, I feel such pride of your love and kinship to the country and the culture. You are the 3rd culture child and a global citizen.
    As for your questions:
    1. I hope they have TRESE AFTER DARK available; and they do talk about keeping the spells intact because translations of "spells" kind of kill it. A point of view : is for you to search it and take a deeper dive into the language and culture.
    2. A good portion of the English dub voice actors are Filipino-American or Filipino-Canadian. To finally use the Filipino accent. Although a good number of the non Filipino cast put a heavy Latino accent, that i'm sure you remember NO ONE HAS HERE. Not even my Spanish born/speaking friends talk like that here.
    3. There is no general explanation for ASWANG - because it is a term with very localised specifics. Due to village to village and island to island. An aswang in Bais, Negros Oriental is not the same as an aswang in Manila. It is the variation of the Philippines as the Archipelago.
    4. Not dubbing the word NAY or KUYA - also lends to how people learn and integrate foreign words learned through shows or songs or other art forms. Like how Anime has grown the use of SEMPAI, or OPPA because of KDrama. It makes yoh want to learn more about what it is and why the culture and language use it. Much like hierarchy of age is valed in Korea, giving respect by calling your older siblings:
    Kuya - Eldest brother
    Diko - 2nd eldest
    Sanko - 3rd eldest
    Ate - Eldest sister
    Ditche - 2nd Eldest
    Sanse - 3rd eldest
This was trickled down by the trade with china before the Spanish occupation/colonisation.
    5. Actually it is about the BABAYLAN MANDIRIGMA : basically the mediator of keeping the humans and supernatural creatures in NEUTRAL GROUND. Like how the ministry of magic is in the background and does not surface to the muggles. But live side by side. Because so many micro cultures have so many folkloric creatures of the night. Unlike JOHN CONSTANTINE: he gatekeeps the demons and spirits from entering the human plane.
    6. Silvia has the right to voice that it may or may not give a good impression of Manila, but this also takes into account that it makes you only recall that something can be based in Manila of you see these scenes. Much like how most people associate the busy background of Ghost in the Shell with Hong Kong apartments. Because it does look like that. It is an art medium and we don't really know the timeline it is set in. Her phone is a Nokia i used to use in the early 2000s. Hank's car is a late 70s, early 80s model.
The folkloric creatures are used as cautionary tales much like why FAIRY TALES : are meant to impart LESSONS to children. They weren't all the same of streamlined until Hans Christian Andersen & the Brothers Grimm compiled and made them 1 form of a story. Which ironically disney has also changed. Little mermaid died, she didn't survive. It was the 1st thing i pointed out when i saw it the first time.
They even have the building for MERALCO where the electricity spirit is. The reason they didn't go so deep, is so we can get a SEASON 2. So that more storylines can be shown.
Here is an online version of the TRESE COMIKS :
    readtreseonline.carrd.co/
You can read more and hopefully Budgette & Kajo can make more and we get more TRESE ON NETFLIX.

Everything that you just said about the MRT being so "familiar" to you when watching this scene - I would suggest for you to also watch the Netflix "Trese After Dark" Were the producers, writers and actors talked about the filming, making, deciding the background location and other stuff for the feel of the series.

"Trese" spanish adapted term by Filipinos that means "thirteen" "13" an unlucky number to Filipino culture. The number holds with it something mysterious and paranormal.

hmmm for me, the writer should put an intro on those characters that were adopted on the anime, even notes on those Filipino terms such as "Lakan" and "Babaylan". As only Filipinos know exactly what they mean.
Anyways, the adopted characters such as "aswang (tik-tik)", "tikbalang, "nuno sa punso", "tiyanak", "kapre", and "maligno" can be searched on google :). For the episodes on Netfilx, yes, I agree that it was way too fast for non-Filipinos and lacks details, so those who are not familiar with Philippine folklores will have a hard time grasping it. But this is good, as this is a start and there is a lot of room for improvements.

There's also LRT (Light Railway Transit) and PNR (Philippine Nat'l Railways).
In fact, there's no MRT in the city of Manila, routes are from North Ave Quezon City to Taft Ave Pasay City.

I will try to answer your two questions, hope this will help :)
    1) The first, in the spell, (saan kayo papunta, ako'y makikiraan, kaya't pakibuksan ang pintuan) is a direct word in Tagalog that means "where are you going, I will pass, so please open the door"
    2) nanay or nay, ate , kuya, tatay or tay are words that refer to a family member, It is also Tagalog. In english, they are, mother, elder sister, elder brother and father, respectively. On my observation, there is no translation of Filipino mythological creatures like aswang or mananggal (half - human, half - bat) into English because I think it is rarely used, and these creatures are folk tales in the Philippines only.

wow.. back then I already thought the promotion for Urduja (another Filipino animated film released in 2008) was already great, then Trese comes and thanks to Netflix and technology, it's now easier to promote it internationally too.. i was also reminded of Dayo (Filipino animated film also released in 2008) because it was about supernaturals too, but for children.. there are also several Filipino-made animate films that I haven't watched yet and Trese gave me a push to watch them all lol

I'm pretty sure the dubbing and subbing are made to be like that since like japan anime subbing type still onnichan, chan, san senpai smth like that, its like if you like it, you need to learn at least this if you wanna know more, it helps understanding culture as well so they wont get it wrong why like example many filipino call guys who is a stranger, kuya/older brother still, just adding older brother will be weird for most foreign country but if its kuya they will be curious and do their research and understand the culture difference since you'll understand easier by research if like you dont know any filipinos to tell this.

you have such good points and yeah I agree that they could've included some brief introductions of the supernatural creatures for foreign audience who are not familiar with Philippine folklores. But I guess they wanted to go with the show don't tell style of storytelling but it's a missed opportunity because these creatures have rich cultures behind them. and it makes me happy that you're so enthusiastic with Filipino culture like you're so immersed in it, it seems like you really love Philippines. keep thriving!

RPG Metanoia - kinda old but still fun to watch and will also help in getting use to filipino
