Aussie Magpie sings like R2D2!!

- Pi has daily visits from some local magpies, and one sings like R2D2! She also makes the sound of a car alarm, and a barking dog, which was what I was trying to record that day. When I played it back I realised it sounded like R2D2! It's so weird.
At about 2:00 mins and 3:02 mins she does it (I don't know how to edit movies sorry).
I don't know if someone in my area plays a lot of star wars games or something, but she learnt it from somewhere.
My favorite bird in the whole world.. so full of character. The sound of Australia.
First time I went to Australia I was camping in Bright, VIC. Australian Magpies along the Kookaburras were the first things I heard when I woke up on the first morning, it’s something I will never forget and always brings back memories of that trip.

My family moved from NZ to Australia in '67 when I was 3. The magpies' songs are one of my oldest and most beloved memories. Such a beautiful creature.
Magpies are great mimic's and can be taught words whistles and other sounds. In the wild the mimic other birds often. They are highly intelligent and they make great pets but, they often move on when they mature as they are territorial. Thank you for the video post.

A lifelong bird lover, I fell in love with magpies when vacationing in Copenhagen and Berlin last fall. There was a large and very cheeky magpie who spotted me having my coffee and reading on the little courtyard patio of our Airbnb - and immediately began to chat his little head off telling me all about himself. I made a point of going out there every morning at the same time...and he always showed up and came right over for a chat. What a personality he had, looking directly at me, cockng his head and talking away.. really, REALLY cute! I gave him a few bits of a whole wheat blueberry muffin my daughter brought from a bakery. I fell in love with this little guy and would have loved to have taken him back home with me. 😏 Back home in Atlanta I have a bird feeding station on one of my apt. patios (one patio is for the birds, the other for people 😄). I have a very friendly wild crow who comes for his daily treats. He caws excitedly from the chimney tops of the building across from mine whenever he sees me. Last year he left me a juicy red strawberry on the middle my patio railing - where I leave HIS treats. He's been visiting several times a day for more than 4 years now and he does recognize the name I gave him..."Blackjack". I just got a thing for birds. 😄

@@pilotmike7569 Awww...maggies are the cutest, so much personality and sass! I will definitely give Blackjack your regards. He and his mate, and their little crow that they had last summer, were on the chimney top earlier today. I put out raw peanuts in the shell for them, which they LOVE. Crows are such clever birds. They learned very quickly that peanut shells will roll down the roof, so they take the peanuts and drop them in the rain gutter and use the rain gutter as their little bowl! I made some cornbread for them this morning and cut it into little squares. I split the squares in half and spread a little peanut butter and apricot jam in there so they have a mini cornbread PB "birdie" sandwich. Blackjack has a bit of a sweet tooth. He loves any type of jam. I watched his little tongue come out and lick the jam out and savor it. His eyes glistened - he really liked it, lol! He is so darn cute. He was bobbing his head up and down cawing in excitement. Crows are very appreciative and thankful for whatever you give them. I try to give them healthy treats that are good for them - and always a bowl of fresh, filtered water with ice cubes in it. All the birds really love having fresh water. In the summers, I put a larger bowl out so they can take turns splashing and bathing in it. I hope to see Poland someday. My daughter and I were tempted to take the train into Poland from Berlin but ran out of time. We're headed to the British Isles in the spring. We'll have a lot of ground to cover in 10 days!

There is nothing so quintessentially Aussie as waking up to a troop of magpie's carolling: marvellous birds and I love them. Thanks for posting, even if it does go back a bit.
I live in Denmark and in Danish those birds are called "Skade" which directly translated to English literally means "damage". Skader/magpies are very common in Northern Europe. But that was not why I decided to write here. I have a funny story where a magpie/skade actually got told of. I have a larger balcony that are coverved with glas, sliding window doors all around so it can be both 80% open and fully closed and tight. Along the doors outside of the balcony I have a 1/2 meter wide, 1 meter deep earth filled flower bed with small bushes and flowers. It is on the second floor. A few years ago I got an injury that kept me locked to my home pretty much all the time for 6 months. From early spring to fall. So spent a lot of time on the balcony and discovered a pigeon pair early on, getting nest material, initially just from the flower bed but fast they learned I was a good guy they should not be afraid of, so they entered the enclosure and got material from there as well. I began to feed the pigeons with a little mais once in a while as they hatched nearby but out of my sight. When their new babies grew older they also came by. They all became completely trusting of me to the point where they would walk on me my while dozing off. Magpies/skader would also land at the flower bed and take some mais but never came closer although seemingly not afraid of me. Next year the pigeons decided to nest in the flower bed in a corner up against one of my sliding doors. It became a habit for me to give them a handful of mais every day when coming home from work. I followed them laying eggs and watched several times magpies, where one tried to provoke the nesting bird, to leave the nest, so the other could steal an egg, but the magpies clearly had respect for the pigeons because as long as the bird stayed on the nest nothing really happened. They though upped the ante and became bolder and bolder, coming closer and more provocative each day. It was the same pair of magpies and one day, few days after the pigeons had hatched they really went in for the kill and then the father pigeon finally placed himself on the edge of the nest wing to wing with the mother pigeon and one magpie stood in front of the nest and the other came flying in from the side to provoke the others of the nest, happened again and again approaching closer and closer to the father pigeon UNTIL the magpie flew screaming 2-3 cm (a little inch) in for an attack and SUDDENLY the father pigeon did something I never saw before, it WHACKED (!) the magpie in the most violent way with its right wing exactly when it was closest and in the air. The magpie got such a WHACK that it were hurled horizontally 2 meters straight out and tumbled through the air all the way down to the ground. Looked as it was hit hard with a tennis racket, not a pigeon wing. The other magpie flew down to it and it took 15 minutes before it eventually took off, but the WHACK was totally cartoonish with a sky of feathers (from the magpie) when it was hit. The mother pigeon was clearly proud of the father and they both where very pleased with each other for days. I saw the magpies again, but they never came close to the nest while I saw it. The 2 hatched pigeons came to be grown ups and they now visit me regularly and bring their spouses and kids for the season. When I told friends about the pigeons coming in the beginning when I had my injury they all said that my balcony would be full of pigeon shit, but to this day I have never had to remove any pigeon droppings. It was pretty disgusting to remove their nest but a small price to pay for the many fun hours "my" bird family have provided me. I can still laugh out loud recalling that WHACK and the cartoonish cloud of feathers derived from it. Pigeons 1, magpie 0. Although "skader" not same species, I understand from reading here, as magpies they too can adapt other sounds. I also have heard "my" magpies do car alarms and one of my friends had a pair many years ago when Aqua´s "Barbie Girl" swept the globe for years, would whistle that chorus. "I am a Barbie girl, in a Barbie woooorld".

Little known fact, R2D2 was voiced by larry, a middle aged magpie who till this day waits upon the wall for the darkness to fall.
Also little known fact : Kenney Baker , the little man that was inside R2D2 recently died at the age of 81. He was R2D2 in six Star Wars films , and was asked to be in another, but was too sick to travel. He did very well for a guy that wasn't expected to live beyond puberty. He may have had Larry, the middle aged magpie , in the machine to give it voice. Look this up if you want to read more about Kenny Baker. He was married to another little person. I'm not blowing smoke here.

My wife and I visited your beautiful country several times in the last decade and saw many magpies, but nothing as vocal as this fellow. And yes he does sound like R2D2 at times. Thanks for sharing....

I think you're right - those sounds at 2:00 and 3:00 mins are very familiar to this Star Wars fan. Since magpies are excellent mimics given the chance, it may well have been as you thought, perhaps she learnt the sounds from nearby (I swear I heard a dog bark in there as well!). And I heard you say near the end "are you going to do the car alarm for me today?" so clearly this girl has enjoyed picking up a lot of sounds that she's heard. Thanks for posting this fantastic video of a majestic bird's beautiful sounds (a bird with a kinder soul than some of the rude trolls who've posted here).
That's not an impersonation, it's a collection of their usual songs. Generally they have a local song shared with their group, sometimes they imitate others' songs or other birds... This one has a very colourful repertoire!

Wonderful.I grew up with magpie song every morning. We were’nt totally happy with them because they did their best to eat the eyes out of our lambs. But their song is amazing.

What a joyful song... I heard this sound on Dr. Blake Mysteries and thought it was some kind of electronic bird song and started to investigate after they showed a glimpse of a black and white bird... A wonderful mystery solved. :)

Magpies sound very much like those sections of corrugated plastic hose sold in toy stores....the hose is rotated in the air and produce sounds just like a Magpie.

That's awesome. I'm bias because I barrack for Collingwood but there is no better bird noise I love hearing than a Magpies warble in the morning. That particular Maggie is a star and I love how territorial they are and how they train their young. Great video and thanks

Group of magpies ,,I feed them everyday by bowl of water ,bird food & multigrain bread ..they are gorgeous ,intelligent & very smart birds I ❤️ them..please everyone put food & water for them in your frontyards or backyards.All birds are need aspecially water & food for to feed their babes ..as I watch them their babies are even growed well but still their mums feeding them ..also they loves cat biscuit...😊👌❤️😘🦜❤️

That is an Australian Southern Magpie you can tell because it has a white back, northern Magpies for some reason have a black back. The Magpie is the largest song bird in Aus, if not the world, I love there chortly clook

I think the most amazing part of the video was the beginning, when the magpie was making a sound EXACTLY like jets passing overhead. So realistic I would've sworn it was a real plane.

NEIGHBOURS BIRDS!!!!! You hear these on Neighbours! Being from the uk I had no idea what these birds where until I went to NZ. In the uk magpies sound very different indeed (more like machine guns)
The U.K. magpie is a different bird.
The UK ones are in the same family as the crows.

I was told by a WIRES person that their songs vary from magpie group to magpie group in the wild, so they know who belong and who are outsiders. So when a rehabilitated magpie is returned to the wild, it needs to be put back where it was found.

They are very fascinating, friendly, and inquisitive little guys. They would walk right up to my daughter and me in the parks in Copenhagen and Berlin. Very friendly and chatty!
Australian magpies have to be my favourite birds in the world, just so long as you don’t leave anything shiny, and especially not keys - where they can see them, & be very careful of newborn animals. Otherwise, these are amazing birds. Actually, you’d not be,ie e how intelligent they are.

So lovely to see this video. I have a continual flow of Magpies come to my property in Melbourne Australia, they come to drink, bath & preen in my 8 bird baths. New baby magpies every few months. They really are such intelligent creatures. I often make noises and they mimic. I've been filming my Magpies.
