Magpies are feared because they swoop at people during breeding season. However, if magpies are fed by humans they do not see us as a threat and do not attack. They are closely related to ravens and crows and are very intelligent. They also have a uniquely beautiful voice.
I was very surprised, when I first heard from an ornithology professor, that the australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is not a Corvid and therefore not a close relative of crows, ravens and the european magpie (pica pica).... but they are all songbirds. The australian magpie has this misleading name, because of the similar look with the european magpie....
I've been feeding maggie's for 40 yrs in various locations around victoria, I've never seen so many in one place. They normally live in extended families consisting of 4-8 individuals. The families are territorial and will assert their dominance over any food/water sources in their territory. There must be 4-5 families in the vid all sharing the same space!
Young males collect together in large groups dependant on resources. It seems they are a pool of mates for families that lose a paternal bird. I had 28 or so hanging around while I lived in an industrial area. Many of the locals fed them, so resources were plenty.
I’m making headway with Scruffy, one of my magpie visitors. Today he stayed on the outside table, while I refilled the food bowl, rather than retreating further. I am impressed with your vid.
Anybody noticed Magpie table good manners etiquette by not eating over the plate, taking their food to be eaten away, therefore leaving open space access for other birds to get food...
That Was pretty civilized. I thought there would be a lot more squabbling and the sounds magpies make when their pissed. It was there a few time's but it's nothing with the number of birds there.

But I keep feeling they still are unconfident. I wished to see corvids when I realized the sacred creatures they are, not only because of their intelligence. They are far more than that. Thanks Karen. When I was still in school, we raised a baby magpie affectionately named Petrie after the kids movie land before time. Was pretty cool to have a pet Maggie for a while, later released at a reserve sonewhere I believe.
Yeah they do get a bad rap, I feel quite deserving sometimes when they burry their claws in the back off my head haha. But still a funny and cheeky bird. We never got swooped though living in this place :-) They did get looked after though haha.

All the magpie babies have come to visit in the garden - so cute! But they are huge; much bigger than in Europe - more like our crows, and they look different too. You could plant some nut trees for them, or give them some nuts that you just crack a little shell off from one side and snuflower seeds, if they are in an area where they eat people's white bread cause that is not healthy for birds. Then when you get a chance, you can tickle them under the feathers in the neck. This they will like. Not on the chest or on the back, that scares them and is not comfortable at all.
Jaime Banse no you will not see them in north america at all as they are only native to australia and were introduced to new zealand in the 1800's as crop pest management. Can't live without my magpie peckerheads they're part of the family now ,going on 10yrs old ma and pa maggie bring the new kids down to meet us every nesting season.
How did you get them to come to your yard in the first place? See very few in my area. Years ago worked at a place that had a table and sears outside. If we were out there eating our lunch and weren't quick enough sharing, the Magpies would just stick their beak in your sandwich and help themselves 🙂

Yeah, had some left over roast pork that had been in the fridge a little while, needed to get rid of it. And yeah certainly was a dung beetle haha, finally got rid of that after finally it letting me fix it enough to sell it, tried selling it about 3 times, everytime something broke on it not long after advertising, again that I had to fix before putting it up for sale again. Anyway was a good dat seeing it go finally.

I had a pair of Magpies who called in every day for about 24 years (along with their few young ones for a few months each year). This July, another pair appeared with their young. Since then the numbers increased exponentially to...40 ! (It's dropped back to about 25 at this time). But, it's too much ! I feel completely under siege ! They arrive just before sunrise and sit outside my bedroom window, staring in at me through the bamboo blinds until finally I arise, when they all congregate around the back of the house for their "breakfast". The noise is cacophonous. (Poor neighbours - who so far haven't complained...phew !). I've managed to get their 'feeding times' down to just a couple of times during the morning and lunchtime, but I can't understand why suddenly this year, their numbers have risen so much and so fast. Any ideas about this ?
If you are going to feed Magpies, make sure you mix some calcium supplement (from the vets) with the meat so the babies don't get rickets. If the Magpies feed their babies straight meat they don't get the calcium and other nutrients as they would if they were fed beetles and grasshoppers, etc... in their natural diet.
Its a cultural thing apparently....some areas in Australia have flocks of 50 .Where my sister lives its about 8 and where I live it is about 2 (except for when they have babies)
NOT raw meat. Mine love cheese and, in the absence of cheese they eat oats. Unlike cockatoos they will not attempt property damage if you miss out on feeding them. I f you feed them regularly the same pair will come year after, bringing their young once they are fledged. After about a year their parents chase the young out of the territory, after a period of very obvious parental exasperation.

That would not have been an Australian magpie. European magpies are a totally different species. Australian magpies are more closely related to European crows and ravens.

We have a family of five we’re close with that we occasionally feed but you won’t get any other families coming anywhere close to us cause there’s always a big fight if anyone gets near. I wonder how you get so many to come together like that. Food also makes them more terroritorial
Jealous; would love this; but no magpies here in northeastern us; although that looks like an almost overwhelming number. Been trying to encourage crows to roost near.
They can be in family groups of 20 to 30 , but I have never seen this many. We had a group of 20 at the end of our road for years and then all disappeared . I think some sad sack poisoned them.

My mum has about 13 maggies who live nearby in one group.
I found in South Australia they have white backs and hang out in gangs by the numbers

Dying to know what was on the plate the the Magpies went so nuts over. Seems to have the same effect as catnip on cats.
Was left over roast pork that was getting on a bit and was going to be thrown out so thought no use wasting it, gave the birds a treat.

My error. Unlike European magpies, Australian magpies are NOT corvids. They are relatives if the butcherbird.
