- This young magpie is practicing it's vocalisation, but the lorikeets are not the most appreciative audience! After giving a curious but short audience to the magpie, they prefer to canoodle in the back stalls instead!

I live in the country and it’s magic to see all these birds. There is nothing like the sound of magpies warbling in the mornings.

I have four magpies who always come to see us at 4:00pm everyday and they will sit at the door step next to your feet with out a care in the world. They never seen to attack me or my family when it magpies season and they always keep a closer watch on us ... And there is my life story.😎

I urge anyone reading this who refrains from telling their animal stories for whatever reason to just do it anyway! Sometimes these kinds of stories can end up long & life story-y but personally I could read them for hours on end - especially bird tales :)

I SAID HELLO TO THEM AND I GUESS THEY REALISED I LIKED THEM AND NOW THEY COME TO MY PLACE FOR FOOD, BUT CROWS COME TOO UNFORTUNATELY AND I DONT WANT THEM. THEY MAKE A TERRIBLE RACKET AROUND MY HOUSE MAKING MY NERVES BAD.

My rainbow lorikeet understands and speaks multiple bird languages, human and musical whistling. I believe birds can understand each other no matter which language they personally speak. I'm in NZ not Aus.

Thanks for the feedback. I shot the vid right outside my kitchen door, Bayview, Sydneys northern beaches. A lot of birds visit my house, probably because it is up in the trees!

Our friendly neighbourhood magpies hatched their chick this year. He is bossy, cheeky and quite capable of giving you a pinch, just to see how you react. Make friends and you never get swooped!
I was feeding our neighbourhood Magpies this morning. Suddenly a very large grey bill pushed itself into the meat being proffered. It was a brown Kookaburra inviting himself to breakfast, I had to hand feed him so he could throw his head back to swallow. Such a gentle bird he was careful to take it softly from my fingers. The Wildlife carers must have raised and released him. There are about 10 who fly in a group in our area, and they certainly make the neighbourhood ring with their chortles and chuckles!

:P Lorikeets look so mean. But I can't wait for the next few weeks when they come eat our pears. I just recently moved to Australia and I have to say the birds are amazing here. Never seen that quantity of birds in my life. All sorts, all colors.. Oh and the pelicans.. I never get tired of those. And the Galah's and cockatoos.. it's really amazing! Love Australia

Australia has more bird species than any other place on earth.
Everywhere I look I see colorful bird couples, sitting in each other. Even the young Magpie is touched by this spectacle, and speaks to the male who pays note, as well to the very soft chimes, that begin about then.

Thanks for your comments. I agree about them being smart! Maybe that's why their distant ancestors ruled the earth for so may millions of years! Oh, and of course the fact that they were huge with enormous teeth might have helped too! :)

Man aren’t we lucky to have this as a normal occurrence? Even this is special for aussies, but I’m lucky I live out where I get all the aussie birds.

Australia is so blessed with our bird life every bird who visits our garden has a personality of its own so we name them and encourage them and so theykeep coming with their new generations constantly ❤️❤️

ohhh such a cute lil boy ,makes me sad of all the memorys i have of one i raised called pie , i used to be a member of the gould league and am licensed to care for them and he came in with a very broken wing that couldnt be repaired
i had pie for 20 years before he perished and he was amazing ,he could talk ,sing and do a wide range of "tricks" such as hang upside down and loop around his perch ,you may not believe this but he also taught me to call to other maggies miss him greatly
i was brought here by my search for what a baby magpie's song sounds like after hearing one outside my window sing the most beautiful tune i've heard a bird sing here in Aus. until now i had no idea magpie's sounded that way (don't judge me!). it reminded me so much of my fav bird song the Tui (new zealand bird) sings & it caught me off guard. (coming from nz a lot of our birds songs are super "melodic" & beautiful & not screechy or sqwarky at *all*, compared to how a lot of the bird tunes i hear in aus are. this is not a dig btw, just my observation). so when i heard my little magpie friend singing his song so beautifully & quite loudly too might i add lol i immediately had to investigate as to whom did this beautiful tune belong that was able to cut through some very loud mental noise occuring in my head at that time.. when i found him he was high up in a tree & i just sat & listened & watched him, smiling to myself in deep gratitude for him/his song. then he flew off & i suddenly realised my through-the-roof stress & anxiety levels had all but pretty much disappeared. what an amazing blessing & moment that was. thank you dear magpie friend 🙏🏼❤️✨

This looks like paradise. I hope one day I can live somewhere with a garden where native birds visit! Our magpies gave up on our apartment building when the Body Corporate had their tree brutally pruned just before nesting season :(

I had never connected Parrots and Parakeets. I'm not much of a bird person. Sorry!! I do love looking at them, though.

We had.a maggipie that lived in the horse paddock and whinnied like our little pony,sounded a lawn mower and a whipper snipper and lots of other birds,it was amazing.

such a vast contrast, the magpie stunning black and white, pales in comparison to the most colourful clowns of the bird world.
I fell in love with the lorikeets on a trip with my kids to Sydney just before Christmas the kids also loved the way they would just come up to you, in the avery were we were staying, and the wild ones joined in on the action too

I have wild magpies that are do take they run around my outdoor table while my mates and I are having a few beers no fear at all they eat out of your hand and when they start singing it's pure joy

We used to have a beautiful family of magpies at our old home. The parents were amazing. I once witnessed the mother discipline one baby as he was playing with a dried leaf. He rolled over on his back while the mother pecked him and took the lead off him. It was sad but amazing to see.. then when the mother walked away the baby went back and grabbed his dried leaf and carried it around a while as if to say I still have it!
It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. It was like watching humans rouse on their children at the shops

So lovely to see this video. I have a continual flow of Magpies come to my property in Melbourne Australia, they come to drink, bath & preen in my 8 bird baths. New baby magpies every few months. They really are such intelligent creatures. I often make noises and they mimic. I've been filming my Magpies. Aww I love magpies. Super intelligent. And I love their warbling song. Apparently you can teach them to talk but it involves splitting the tip of their tongue (which sounds really cruel to me). I rescued a juvenile a few years back and she brings her whole family back to visit every time they have a new baby
Thanks for your comment! I believe that suggestion about splitting the tongue originated with crows, but I'm almost certain it's an urban myth. Magpies don't use their tongues to make sounds, they use their dual larynx which is an anatomical variation not commonly found in birds, but it is responsible for that beautiful warbling you mention. As for "talking", magpies are very good mimics and I've often heard a visiting maggie enunciate a familiar word or two.
Nique Think you're right about crows. I've also heard the thing about splitting the end of the tongue with mynor birds, which are also highly intelligent and when bonded to a human can be taught to talk. But I love the way juvenile birds of different species can be so friendly towards one another. Baby magpies are so cute - except when they follow you around squawking for food. My first rescue magpie would always bring her kids back for a visit every season once they've fledged - when they're still clumsy and covered in down - and that was when I was living in an apartment building so the constant squawking used to drive the neighbours mental.

It's easy to see that these guys are very closely related to the great tail Greackles we have in the southwest. The magpies are a little bit sillier than the Grackles, but you can't miss the similarity in the walk, the attitude, and body language. Grakles have a comedy Gene too, and the entertainment value alone is worth anything you'd spend feeding them. This ild Earth sure has got some amazing critter on it.
Thanks for your comment! However I suspect there is a world of difference between a Great-tailed Grackle and an Australian Magpie (European magpie being an entirely different bird). I know the Grackle is considered a bit of a pest by some Texans due to it being noisy and getting into the trash sometimes - but I quite enjoy it's song. On the other hand the Australian Magpie is one of the great songbirds of the Aussie bush. It's also a great mimic, often verbalising human conversation or mimicking the sound of machinery. Magpies have a dual larynx, as do the butcher birds from which they descended some 8 million years ago, giving them extraordinary vocal abilities. @@Beanick I agree with you. I haven't ever seen any magpies except on video. What I am seeing is their walk, and how they carry themselves. The Geackles similarity is unmistakable. When I first saw them, I thought they were some kind of crows, but I went to the library and looked them up. That's when I found out that they're corvids, and they are closely related to the magpies and orioles. Anyway, even if nobody knows or cares about me technicalities, the birds themselves are a welcome sight for me any place I go. They costantly teach me things and make me laugh every day. They also reduce my stress level to near zero. They're definitely my little buddies!
