    What a fascinating video! I've always been intrigued by bird calls, and it's amazing to see how Australian Magpies use their vocalizations to communicate with each other over long distances. It's interesting to learn that they have different calls for different situations, such as danger or intruder alerts. The concept of "tribes" in their family groups is also intriguing. It's great to see channels like Wild Home Videos that bring us closer to the wonders of nature and help us appreciate the diversity of life. Thank you for sharing this educational video with us!

      All these smart birds have several specific calls.
      What you dont often get to hear is that they also speak softly to eachother in ways you cant hear from a distance.
      Im sad that the magpies here in Europe (pica pica) seem to be much more suspicious of people than in australia. Its very hard to strike up a friendship with a Magpie compared the crows and jackdaws where im from.
      They are great animalsk!

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they make you feel good, don't they. Lovely creatures. We live in a region which is quite dry. Some years during summer we get no rain at all for up to four months. Our magpies don't like there rain. They always look miserable when it is raining but as soon as the sun comes up they perk right up. They are really smart, and usually after a good rain the worms come up for air. I wouldn't be surprised if that has something to do with their change of mood😁

      Thank you Carmen! They do have quite a range of sounds. We live next to a national park in Western Australia, quite far from the city or any town so the tribe of Magpies which live here have very little contact with Magpies in other places. I cannot say if it is just our imagination but we have noticed that over the last 20 years they have slightly changed their calls. It seems that they use the piercing call much more frequently than they did before. A thought struck us that it might be possible that due to its isolation this tribe of Magpies might have developed a slightly different language to other Magpie tribes far away. Who knows, but it is an interesting possibility. They certainly are intelligent enough to do it. Kind regards and greetings

      Yes, and in the springtime, especially during full moon, the magpies sometimes warble during the whole night. But it is a gentle warble, not like their alarm calls, and is actually soothing. I find it is a comforting sound and like to fall asleep with it. Thank you for your lovely comment

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is one of the nicest things to hear when you wake up in the morning with a blue sky and sunshine peeking through the window. Thank you for your comment James. I have to say though, I also really like when they sing during the night. They don't often do it, but every now and again we hear them softly gurgling late into the night. We have no idea what causes them to do it. It is quite a different sound than when they call during the day. Kind of soft like a lullaby. We recently recorded them making that sound at 1 AM and have considered making a video about that but in the meantime we have included the audio as background sound for one of our Australian wildflower Shorts "A tiny Midge orchid" which we will publish this afternoon. If that interests you please leave a comment, we would like to know what other people think about that.

    I have a mob of magpies that hang around my place. I played this through my speakers, and it drove them NUTS. I suppose I shouldn't, but they know it's their territory.

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Haha! Yes! We have a tall tree outside our window. I had to use the headphones when I was editing this video otherwise a bunch of them would be on the tree screaming the whole time. Be careful with this. There are Magpie alarm calls mixed in this audio and it is likely to send the Magpies into a frenzy.

      I’m doing the same thing here right now in Melbourne Australia right now iat 8pm and they all pissed off😅😅👍

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My theory is that your magpie tribe is relatively small. We have quite a large tribe at our place so when your magpies heard the audio of so many different birds they felt overwhelmed and did a hasty retreat. It is also quite likely that your place is on the edge of their territory and they backed off to regroup. We have a large open paddock next to our house which is surrounded by high trees. That situation is prime Magpie realestate and we often see them using offensive tactics to repel any would be intruders. I suppose this audio would be useful if you had Magpies that swoop living close to your house and you wanted them to relocate.@@paulmavric887

      LoL 🤣🤣😂 I do the same on my phone put it near the window. So the magpie s can hear it. Not Shaw. If thay make a diffrent sound the one s in this vid. Or if all magpie just make the same sound. Well the one hear near my place. Sound no diffrent to the one s in this vid. So not. Shaw if it drive s them. Nuts. Or what. 😊

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The speakers on a phone distort some of the sounds and the Magpies can tell the difference. It is likely that they would behave differently if you played it louder and on better quality speakers.@@countrabricksbuildcraze8916

    Such beautiful sounds. I think birdsong triggers something deep inside. I’ve been slowly making friends with a gang of about 15 magpies that hang around my local park. They trust me enough to come within a meter.. Such a bunch of characters

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not a theory, this has been scientifically proven. On a subliminal level our brain is listening. Our ancestors evolved living with nature and listening for potential threats was important for survival. Our brain translates harmonious birdsong as "no danger", and absence of birdsong raises the alarm hormones "just in case". There have been many studies which confirm this and there is a lot of literature regarding this available. We have lived on an isolated rural property for more than 30 years and rarely see another human more than once a week. But we see birds and animals every waking hour. If you watch the kangaroos grazing peacefully in the meadow, you can see their ears constantly shifting, listening to what sounds the birds make. When a Magpie makes an alarm call their heads pop up straight away. And if a flock of parrots takes off from the ground they get nervous. Magpies are really very interesting birds. They form very close relationships with people. If you regularly visit your magpies in the park and give them food, it won't be long before they trust you enough to take it from your hand. But please don't feed them bread or junk food, just google what they should eat. Thank you very much for your engaging comment Warren, and best of luck with your new friends😊

      Yes that's really true. And if you do something nasty to them they remember it too and respond accordingly😁 They can remember faces and have a very good memory. A neighbour brought us a starving juvenile once which we nursed back to health and this little guy went everywhere with me. As soon as we got up he would jump off his perch and run to the fridge making these feed me noises because he figured out that his food was kept in the fridge. And when I went gardening he would be right there next to me watching for worms that got dug up. And if I was pruning he'd sit on my shoulder. We called him Buddy😊

      I spend a lot of time adjusting the levels with the equaliser to get rid of unwanted sound. Most times I can't get rid of the hiss without loosing sound quality, but it is an great improvement to the unedited audio. This video is taking a page from your book. You like to make long videos. We tend to prefer short ones, but it appears that long videos are getting more popular with YT. It might be that more people are watching on the TV than there used to be. So we thought it might be good to do a few long ones. What is your take on the subject?

    • @MoreliaAustralia
      @MoreliaAustralia ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wildhomevideos I've taken a page from your book and I'm making a lot of short videos now but I think longer ones are better when I have a real story to tell and I put my mind to it.

    This video I watched at least 100 times , together with my rescued magpie Bella , this is her favorite , especially the bit at the waterhole . she is really actively listening and trying to nip the birds on the screen . We soft released her few month ago , but she comes back to eat mealworms and than we watch birds videos , she is also fascinated by European birds . I must compliment you for the BEST SOUND ever in a tube video . Keep up the good work , brilliant effort , thank you

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you, we really appreciate to have someone comment on the audio quality. Coming from a musician is even more welcome. We find it really hard to record a good clear sound of bird calls. Even a slight breeze creates unwanted noises and the mike picks up the sound of an airplane or car from many kilometres away. To tell you the truth, it takes us longer to edit the unwanted noise out of the video than to edit the images. It is really heartwarming to read about Bella. What a great little friend. We nursed a fledgling male Magpie some time ago. He would go everywhere with me. We called him Buddy. When he grew up he would sit on my shoulder and preen my eyebrows. An acquaintance once saw that. His jaw dropped down and he got all panicky. "That's dangerous!" he said all nervously shaking his hands😅He clearly didn't understand how loving that little bird was. It is really good that you still take care of Bella. Magpies belong to a tribe and mostly don't survive long alone if they get separated from their tribe. Other Magpies will attack them if they try to forage on their territory and it takes a long time before a tribe accepts a newcommer if ever, so Bella will need your support. It gives us a nice feeling when we think that there are birds which benefit from our videos so thanks again for letting us know about Bella😊

    Interesting how my local magpies (north eastern NSW) have different calls. Not total different but I can easily tell.
    I have never herd them do a long distance call.
    The ones with a home range that includes my house know me and call nicely when I’m about and are quite friendly.
    The ones further out say very little and bomb my dogs during spring 🤠
