Hi everyone! I've had a lot of people ask me whether or not the kookaburra birds let me pet/pat them so I thought I'd make a video about it! I just don't do it very often because I don't know whether or not they like it and don't want to make them feel uncomfortable!
And the whole time you can hear a female guinea fowl calling in the background 😅
If you would like to support Australian wildlife and the production of future videos you can buy me a $1 coffee here: www.buymeacoffee.com/bboa
50% of the funds will be donated to various wildlife charities and the other 50% will go towards production costs of future videos allowing me to create higher quality videos showcasing a wider range of Australian animals.
Please check with your local wildlife experts before offering any food to the native wildlife in your area. What I offer these birds is an occasional treat and only a tiny portion of their overall diet.

gotta say, I've never understood the calling of patting "petting", makes no sense to me. I actually thought you'd left out a word, "are" & meant to say "they are like pets", still not actually sure if you meant that or if you meant they like patting. Where did the "pet" word come from anyway? Genuinely curious (although I guess individuals probably don't know the answer, is a curious language evolution though)

Bird like to have their feathers gently ruffled up, not smoothed down, especially if you can use your fingernails to gently rub the skin and feather shafts. That reminds them of another bird preening them and they’ll fluff out their feathers slightly. When they smooth in their feathers tightly it’s usually because they’re frightened or wary, so smoothing the feathers down is less pleasant feeling. I learned this from my parrots.

Edit 2: I guess you lot in the replies have attacked Lucid so much. Best troll I've met yet. LMAO.
    _Original comment below:_
When petting a bird, it's always smart and better to bring your hand in from the side instead of over the top. Over the top scares them and that's why they look up and try to bite, since they feel vulnerable. From the side makes them feel less vulnerable, and is a better way to gain their trust. I've been taught this by an expert on hawks and falcons.

Where I live there is a vacant lot/small park across the road. An older lady who lives next to it put in a bird bath/feeder, and it gets a LOT of traffic - mostly magpies, pigeons and finches. The magpies try to bully the other birds, and they chase off the pigeons. But when the magpies go after the finches, a kookaburra that lives in a nearby stand of gum trees chases the magpies off. The kookaburra will then perch on the birdbath, looking after his little mates. they will often fly off together, one kookaburra an 3-6 finches. It's beautiful to watch, and I've seen it play out much the same way about a dozen times.

Kookaburra's normally eat snakes, so fingers look like snakes to them.
This family must get fed regularly by this person for them to be so calm and trusting of her.
The one thing I would do differently is to pat them from the side, not from above, or even go for a scratch under the chin.
Most animals don't trust a hand coming from abover their head, they see it as a threat!
if you keep your hand below their eyeline, they don't feel as threatened.

Hm. That's sort of like a human playing with an elephant, isn't. "Ooh, she's touching me, it's nice but I sure hope she won't twist my head clean off".
Though I too would be more inclined to participate if said elephant previously gave me a nice banana or something.
