    Just got my 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue a week ago. Absolutely love it and easily getting 56mpg combined. It's quiet, comfortable, and feature rich. It loves running in EV mode, often I am on the highway at 55mph and I look at display and it's in EV mode! So far no complaints.

    I want this car but I don't drive much so the gas savings wouldn't make sense for me. However, I like the fact that I wouldn't need to gas up as much due to the efficiency and I don't plan on getting rid of any car until it falls apart so the savings are just a matter of time.

    I have a 2023Hybrid Blue. The cruise control has a small jerk that you can feel when cruising. Took it to dealer, nothing known about it. Me and service manager drove another Hybrid it had same issue. If your going to buy one check it out with cruise on. Oh, was wanting to trade due to the small jerking. • @YourAverageJeweler
    @YourAverageJeweler 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    We went with the blue. My one comment for the video would relate to the price comparison to the ICE models. If you want many of the features the blue has, you are basically buying the SEL and the price difference becomes much more minimal. In that situation the gas savings alone pay for themselves much more quickly.

    • @MattTheCarguy

      That is true. You get more with base hubrid than base ICE. Good point!

  • @GlennLaycock
    @GlennLaycock ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It depends how you drive too - if you drive in normal or smart and drive economically for the most part - the difference shrinks, particularly if you have a winter season where "that motor" is going to be constantly running to keep those batteries warm. On the other side, you will recoup a lot of that difference if you sell it say 6 -7 years down the road - worse case you will sell it easier as couriers and so on are buying the used ones up (particularly with low mileage) like crazy. Arguably your maintenance should be lower too AND here you get 3 years more warranty on a lot of the components related to that powertrain (5/60 is the factory here). Here - likely because that model comes from the USA I think - comes with additional features over gas only model - LED rear lights, dual heat, and more are not on the gas version).

    • @MattTheCarguy
      @MattTheCarguy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course it depends on driving but for the comparison purposes i took an average what manufacturer claims to make it easier. In which country are you located? Powertrain warranty in the US is 7/100k miles

      This is strictly from the coat peespective. As you can see many people pointed out some additional features that you get with the hybrid but in my opinion the bottom line is that for now the cost difference is still too large to justify hybrid purchase for anyone who drives 10-15k miles per year. @MattTheCarguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Based on your numbers dependong of course on cost of gasoline but at 20k miles per year with 20mpg avg you are burning about 19 gallons per week. With Blue Hybrid Elantra if avg is 54 mpg you would be burning 7.1 gallons per week. Difference would be about 12 gallons per week at currently by me $3.3 a gallon would be close to $40 per week savings. BUT it would also be a huge adjustment as far as the drive.

    Complicsting factors to consider:
    1) resale value of hybrid vs gas
    2) inflation over the years
    3) cost of gas in the future
    #1 is probably the most relevant as the other 2 are difficult to predict.

    What needs to also be considered is resale value. When gas is $5 a gallon resale value will be higher than a regular non hybrid model. Just look at a few months ago how high mpg vehicles were in demand. Gas will never be $2.50 a gallon anymore.

    • @MattTheCarguy
      @MattTheCarguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point, but very dependent on gas prices. I disagree as far as gas prices. With change at the helm we may see $2.50 a gallon. It is 3.39 in Florida now.

      @@MattTheCarguy We live in NW Oregon and the least expensive price for gas here is Costco in Warrenton Oregon at $4.049 /gallon of regular. Other stations are at $4.29-$4.49 per regular. The Liberal west coast, CA/WA/and OR have terribly high gas prices. Thats why people on the west coast consider MPG an important consideration when purchasing a new or used vehicle. Try finding a RAV 4 Prime at MSRP, and other similar vehicles as well.
      I agree we need to be once again energy independent and pump more oil here in the U.S. and stop begging countries that hate our guts for some of their oil at inflated prices as well. Crazy times we live in and we all suffer.

    When compared to the non-hybrid Elantra, the Hybrid will save the average driver about $50 per month (at current fuel prices). If fuel does not go up in price, the Hybrid option will pay for itself in about 4 years. Over the lifespan of the vehicle, the Hybrid option will save its owner about $10,000. If fuel does go up in price, savings will be considerably more.

    • @MattTheCarguy

    • @charlesworton4020
      @charlesworton4020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattTheCarguy Matt, my numbers are not correct; I'm in Canada, and fuel prices are higher, and our dollar is weaker. I neglected to compensate. According to the EPA, the Hybrid Blue delivers 54 MPG on combined City/Highway driving. A regular Elantra delivers 37 MPG under the same conditions. Assuming 1,000 miles driven per month, the Hybrid will save its owner 8.5 gallons per month. At the current national average fuel price of $3.56 per gallon, that means the Hybrid will currently save its owner $30.29 per month. If you live in Washington State, you will save $42.03, given the higher fuel cost in that state. Over the last 50 years, fuel prices have risen at about 6% per year; if that trend continues for the next 15 years, the national average price for fuel will be $8.53 per gallon in 15 years. Regarding battery replacement, I did not include that number in the calculation as I cannot derive a reasonable way to value a battery 15 years from now. However, the battery in the Elantra is smaller than most, so I would expect its cost to be commensurate with its size. Hope that helps - Charlie

      @@suwinky actually they use MMR or VAuto valuation as these are the most accurate auction prices. MMR is Manheim Market report. Vauto is a software built off that as well. These are both owned by the same company. They use actual Auto auction sales prices based on year, make model mileage and condition report. Vauto uses retail valuation based on the actual registrations. Unfortunately neither is available to the public. I used KBB as a guide as it is available to individual consumer. NADA is as well and its not much off. Black Book requires subscription and I threw mine out as they were quite off.

    I doubt that hybrid is a smart buy, because it may not save money. The reason is the additional cost of buying a hybrid and the battery replacement makes the gas saving not very outstanding. For example the overal fuel economy of a gas and a bybrid vehicle is 6.7l/100km and 4.7l/100km repectively, so the difference is only 2L/100km or saving $3/100km. To buy a hybride elantra in Canada, you need to pay 2500+hst more than a gas one, which would be $2825. $2825/$3/100km=94,166.67km, which means you need to drive 94,166.67km to make the saving on gas equal to the additionl payment of $2825 for getting the hybride one. In other words, for every additional km beyond 94,166.67km, you just start to saving money. However, do not forget the battery do have a life of use, which is approximately 160,000km/100,000 miles. So (160,000km-94,166.67km)*$3/100km= $1,975, this amount is what you would save eventually for your first battery life cycle without caculating the time value or interests cost of the additional $2825. And if keep this car long term, you have to pay for the replacement of the battery which would be at least another $3000 or even much more, and if the replacement cost beyond $2825+$1975=$4800, you would actually lose money for purchasing the bybrid one. How do you guys think?
