      That's one of the things we even do in the Australian Defence Force when looking for areas to set up temporary training camps, and hiking routes, we communicate with locals in the area. A map can tell you a lot, however there may a river on the map that is known by locals to only be there part of the year. If you get low on water, and were planning to refill at that river, well you will be shocked to find its dry. That's why local guidance is a valuable resource.

      It goes together like him saying "high tide, low tide, and slack tide." There is only high tide and low tide. When the tide is coming in and reaches its zenith then the tide becomes slack and then goes out until it hits low tide. At which point it becomes slack until the tide turns again. That means it's safe only during the time between the tides changing direction. The frequency and duration of this slack time is constantly changing and are never the same from day to day. Thankfully it can be easily predicted. Love the show!

      I didn’t grow up in grizzly territory but I’m in Canada where there are black bears. Many tourists are careless with their food, food waste and garbage. Especially new campers. Best place to see bears isn’t in the backcountry, it’s actually in car camping/family camping areas, or along the road near these campgrounds. Food/garbage management would solve this problem. If people are as reckless in grizzly territory it’s terrifying.

    In the late 60’s and early 70’s, our family spent 4 weeks each summer camping and fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park. My first (and hopefully last) close up encounter with grizzlies occurred during a day hike to Pelican Creek when I was about 10 years old. The trail meandered through meadow and forest and my mom was in the lead with me close behind. Suddenly she froze, turned to the rest of the group and said one word. BEAR! We all stepped off trail and froze with our backs to trees as a mother and her two cubs came crashing through the woods and passed 20 feet away from us. Shaken but safe, we continued hiking and I landed my first 18” trout. Thanks for reviving this memory from 50 years ago!

    • @TheRedKing247
      @TheRedKing247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      This right here. Bear spray is actually considered more effective than a gun at deterring bears, because an injured bear is more likely to fight believing it has no other choice rather than run away, whereas a bear that gets a faceful of bear spray is going to have its senses temporarily disabled so it retreats rather than possibly get more injured. Still better to have a gun than nothing, but either way, always bring bear spray.

      I went through a similar experience. I had never been scuba diving and a guy I was dating at the time signed us up for a beginner-level scuba tour in the Outer Great Barrier Reef. I went through the quick safety brief and then we all went down after being cleared, but I was feeling a lot of anxiety with breathing through the tanks and no matter what I did, my sinuses were not equalizing properly. So my gut told me to not proceed. I told the scuba tour guide I wanted to go up right before they were about to start. I decided to snorkel instead. When the group came back, one of the girls had gotten tired and the guide had to carry her while completing the tour. Every now and then, part of me wonders if I should've just pushed through my anxiety since it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but my gut instincts told me I was not ready that day. When I would ask them if I could go out on the boats with them they would say: "Are you crazy!? Get back to your desk where you belong, you nutjob!" Sound advice.

    Getting trapped in water is terrifying. I learned this first hand when I was younger (maybe around 10) when I was swimming in Lake Michigan. It wasn't a bad day and there was quite a few people around but I still got stuck in a rip current. It wasn't a strong rip current in general (but I was young and weak) nor was I out too deep and was in a spot where I could just touch the bottom but I could not move forward at all nor did I know how to get out of a rip current. Even with so many people around I was struggling and failing to try to get out of it for a minute or two. Luckily my sister (who brought me to the beach) got me out of it. Without her seeing me, I'm not sure what would have happened. Please people, if you are at the beach be observant! Even if its a nice day and you don't feel any current that doesn't mean there isn't one just a few feet from you that someone may be struggling with.

      I remember traveling to Panama with my family when I was a kid, the beach we went to was known for having large waves during a storm and for some reason we decided to visit the beach during the night and it wasn’t storming too bad but the waves were terribly rough and big. So my mom grabbed me and my brother and decided to go in for a bit and as soon as we got in we were all fine swimming and keeping our head up but I was quite small at the time, I’m 21 and 4’11 so I can’t imagine how small at that time.. but all I knew was that I was getting dragged all around, the waves kept taking me away from my mom and brother and dragging me under, I would be underneath the water caught in a wave for what felt like a minute, I just remember not being able to get out of this vicious cycle and just accepting that I was going to drown that day. I managed to cry out that I was struggling but my mom brushed it off and told me to swim back… which I did after nearly drowning

Bear spray doesn't help when you go from sleeping to having your face in a giant predator's mouth and you hear your skull cracking and popping under the pressure of the teeth. The most horrific thing about Grizzly Bear attacks is that they almost always go for the eyes and face first, but not to kill the person, only to maim them and prevent escape or attack. They’re not the only animal to do this, but because of their strength they’re usually the most brutal.
    It also reminds me of my cat playing with a mouse before eating it (which it actually doesn’t do for fun, but to test to see if it can hurt the cat before eating it).

    A lot of people are saying the camper was suicidal, but honestly I think it was a mix of hubris & naïveté.

      @@joetroy2904 Hubris is basically pride or ego - overestimating your abilities; naïveté is being less than fully aware of a situation or how likely a situation is to occur. OP is speculating that the camper did not choose to camp there to intentionally take their life (via bear attack) or even want to die, but a combination of underestimating the danger and its likelihood, and overestimating their ability, resulted in her taking a risk she might not have had she realised the reality of the situation. It clearly resulted in her death.
