Absolutely. Most non-lethal injuries on Irish mountains involve the lower limbs (thankfully, less often, fatal cases tend to result from cardiac arrests and head injuries). There is signage erected by Kerry Mountain Rescue about this before the the start of the Carrauntoohill hike. Incidentally, most accidents occur on the descent. Regular serious hikers know the value of good supporting boots, and also proper clothing - weather conditions on Irish hills can change in an instant. Having said that, the footage is amazing.

Walking poles really make descents and steep ascents a lot easier. As mentioned, proper walking boots with good ankle support will stop any ankle sprains. Things can go South very fast if you have a sprained ankle and the weather changes.

Hiking shoes, rain gear (if going to rain), snacks and a sufficient amount of water. Expect it to take 5 - 8hrs round trip. It can be chilly at the top so take that into consideration.

What is it with folk who climb a mountain dressed like they are going to a music festival. How dumb is that. You should a have decent stout footwear, proper outdoor clothing, walking poles (to prevent injuries), good supply of water and food. Carrauntoohil is not a relaxing fun climb but a challenging one. Whoever watches this video think on, local mountain rescue people go to a lot of trouble and personal risk to rescue unprepared idiots looking to be social media stars.
