  • Ca'rrauntoohil is Ireland's tallest mountain at 3,414 ft high. It is part of the Macgillycuddy reeks mountain range in county Kerry in the south western part of Ireland. If you travel on the ring of Kerry towards Killorglin, you will see sign posts for the Gap of Dunloe and Carrauntoohil. You will end up at your destination in Cronin's yard where the trail begins and ends.
It will take you about one hour twenty minutes to reach the base of Carrauntoohil. The average round trip to the summit and back takes about five and a half hours. It is an amazing picturesque climb on a sunny bed.

Great video. I did it yesterday. Same route- with Pat Falvey. What a man he is. Weather was lovely until we got up the ladder and then it went crazy with wind and rain. Be prepared for any weather would be my advice. What a buzz it was.

I am 67, Don't think I am getting any younger. But I sure am getting very fit. I had been training for Croagh Patrick. A few weeks back I did it twice in eight days. Queen Maeves grave also. And in the last week I did Benbulban twice.
So I hope to climb Carrauntoihil very soon, like some day this coming week. God willing and weather permitting.

Hillwalking in ireland in jeans is extremely dangerous once they get wet they say wet .You were lucky it was a good day,but as i said if you had wet weather the jeans just absorbs and retains water puting the wearer at great risk of getting hypothermia or pneumonia.

Fair play mate. I did it last July. Zero vis at the top unfortunately - but touched the cross. Found going down harder than getting up . We look a similar age - felt a great sense of achievement doing it . I went up and down via ladder.....nice vid. Did you go down the 'zig-zags'?

Hello Brian. I came down the zig zag. I was really lucky with the weather.

Fair play to you Don! You had a great day for it. Could I ask you a question? Regarding the Zig Zags, is the path obvious, and would it be safe to decent with a 12-year-old? Is it steep?

Hi Don. Congratulations on summiting Irelands highest mountain. Your video is amazing, so honest and humble. You have done the mountain justice. Your feelings of joy are 100% accurate. I first climbed 14 years ago, and the feeling you described so well brought me to many mountains since, including Everest Base Camp and Island Peak, with legend Pat Falvey. I hope others are encouraged to experience the joy and achievement you felt in your video. Hope to bump into you on the mountains!

I'm going hunting in the area near Killorglin in the end of September, I'm hoping I can find the time to give this mountain a go while I'm in the area.
My only concern is my fear of heights, but you never know, it might be doable.

I went both up and down devil's ladder 22/8/2021 rain and fog didn't know any other way down. For a beginner.

Brilliant. Well done. I would be a bit apprehensive climbing it in the fog or rain.👍🙂

If you're reasonably fit, you have good footwear and know the entry point on top, the Devil's ladder is probably your best option in heavy mist and rain. You can't really stray off the path as it's in a gully. The trick is to take it easy and be careful with every step as the rocks are very loose in places and it's steep.
