i know this channel is small but it is truly one of my faves on youtube. a real unique vibe. like living in a little dream for a bit. which is very different from your typical retail documentation video. not sure if you're familiar with comic artist John Porcellino's work, but this reminds me of how i felt reading his zine King Cat back in college. his work is very midwestern. maybe that's why i'm drawing connections there.
Sadly that's becoming less common. Inexpensive restaurants used to be a great way for newcomer families to build a business. Every town of 1k had an Italian-ish restaurant, and every town over 5k had a Chinese restaurant. A small restaurant is far less realistic to new Canadians these days. Although those Syrians out east making Chocolate is one of those awesome success stories. Honestly however much I appreciate that they're nonvoting taxpayers, I'm not as cool with PRs as I was before. If a person moves here with the intention of paying for Canadian education and leaving (or becoming Canadian) that's Awesome! I'm less inclined towards people who live here without intention of actually becoming citizens (or eventually leaving). New Canadians make Canada better, we grow through their arrival. Noncitizen residents don't grow Canada in the same way. Those little Italian, Chinese, Thai, and Mexican restaurants made Canada a tiny little bit better. Those families made Canada a tiny little bit better. Each one, made our country tastier.
The reason why it felt so surreal is probably because tbay and dryden are both a prime example of a town that used to be healthy but isnt. For Tbay, I think the town really went to shit after the merger between port arthur and fort william, the merged government just didnt handle spending as wisely as the separated governments did. The malls suffered for it, and covid really didnt help. It’s surreal because you’re too late… But you can still kind of sense what used to be. I dont know, that’s just my take on it. For dryden, the town was mainly a mining town if im not mistaken and a lot of those jobs aren’t around anymore plus the baby boom cause to population left dryden as a truly aging population so there really isn’t enough people around to properly support a thriving mall
The Loon is International! Love this place, fantastic job, dude.

There is more to see in Dryden. You didn’t go downtown
I made the mistake of visiting in April when it was below freezing.
more like micro-malls ;)
