  • Here's a detailed look under the hood and underneath the all-new 2020 Ford Escape!
The Ford Escape has a 3-cylinder Turbocharged engine with cylinder deactivation, an 8 speed automatic transmission, electronically disconnecting AWD, McPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension.
New for the Escape is an electric brake actuator (instead of a vacuum booster) and a secondary starter for the start stop system. The timing belt is dipped in engine oil for quietness and lubrication.

This is by far the best type of car reviews anyone has ever thought of! We need more people like you to save us from trash modern car manufacturing. Keep it up man honestly, this is going to be a turn of the new decade and I bet most reviewers on TH-cam are going to follow in your footsteps! P.S I NEVER usually leave comments on ANY videos, but this deserves more than I could portray.

Great video! Just as a data point, I've got a 2013 Kuga (EU model Escape) 2.0l TDCi (180 PS) 6-speed PowerShift AWD, and was having issues with the automatic transmission being "jerky", to use a technical term. Two different dealers in two countries all said 5k min. to replace the tranny. Turns out the many times I brought it to the dealer for regular service, they had never changed the transmission fluid or filter. Since this fluid/filter was changed, the transmission works perfectly. I'm happy to have found a more diligent mechanic that understands this stuff.

In Europe, the 1.5L 3 cyl. Ecoboost like that with 150 and 182hp use a timing chain. That’s why the water pump is moved by the serpentine belt.
Only the 1.5L dragon Naturally aspirated engine uses a timing belt soaked in oil. All 1.5L ecoboost 3cyl use timing chain.

Engineers were thinking: we will make the best product design requested from us by button pushers on half the budget and on half tine time given to make anything decent. And we did a great job. We met our goal and exceeded it. Not only the car is designed on half the budget and half the time but we managed to make it complicated for maintenance and not reliable so it is disposable after the first use. Those were extra requests from our dear employers - button pushers and we ticked all the boxes. We will get the bonus for this job. What about buyers? That is marketing department. Nothing to do with us. We will never buy this crap.

I can attest to this as well. Still early, but I had a 2019 Rav4 and is was coarse as hell, the transmission was terrible at low speeds and lurched, the front end had a massive creaking noise when going over large bumps and also when turning (had them look into it and couldn't find anything. It also had a terrible rattle from the hatch that changed with the temperature and got worse the warmer it was. I think I just had a somewhat crappy one, but I was shocked at the build quality of that Toyota.
I now have a new 2022 Ford Escape and so far it's miles better in terms of fit and finish, drivability, and overall technology. Sure, time will tell if the powertrain holds up the way a Toyota would, but it has a lifetime powertrain included from the dealer and I plan to take full advantage of it should the thing break down.

mobgma - my analysis showed that the 2.5 seemed to perform just as good if not better (no turbo lag) than the mid range turbo on the 2019 Escapes. The only down side was that the 2.5 was limited to the base models. I just didn’t feel like spending over 10 grand more just to get the good turbo engine on the Titanium trim level.

mobgma - I test drove a RAV4 and the steering didn’t feel responsive enough to me. Also, I paid $20k total before trade in for my base escape with a wheel upgrade (can’t stand hubcaps). All of the base RAV4s had hubcaps, so I would have probably needed to drop at least $5k more just to get my preferred wheels. All in all, if the RAV4 base model had an option for Alloy wheels, I would probably be in a Toyota today.

This car actually has a lot of unique and interesting technology. Ford’s Focus and Escape have always had excellent ride and handling-they’re not bad cars. Quality leaves a lot to be desired, but at this price, you can’t have both good workmanship and high tech. And to be fair, the likes of BMW also engineer their cars to be “disposable” in this way.

    • @simpleinverso8628
      @simpleinverso8628 3 ปีที่แล้ว

But BMW's are luxury cars for people who can afford to dispose them, while ford makes normal cars which shouldn't break as easily that easily!
They make good trucks, and it seems like the Focus, Fiesta and Figo are decent cars, but this Suv is just... awfull mechanic wise...
i hope the 4cyl ones are at least a bit better...

Direct and port injection will keep maintenance cost down down the road, this is a very good addition.

I have driven one and the power is pretty impressive for a 3 cylinder. It also looks like you have plenty of room to work. I also imagine this will be more reliable that the 1.5 4 cylinder ecoboost. Mazda didn't mind spending a few extra cents to add a removable panel on PLASTIC... and oil changes are the most frequent thing being serviced on a car.

I think it looks modern and futuristic, it was desgined to be Aerodynamic so it can get better fuel economy, sure there are some bad Ideas, I am never going to defend the fact that you have to take off the entire skidpan to do an Oil Change (It's the same story on the 2013). Some one did a 0-60mph run with that 2013 engine and achived it in 7.5 seconds, coupled with the stiffer suspension to give a sportier feel compared to the RAV-4 or CRV, means it's actually fun to throw around corners, and I haven't had much in the way with Understeer with my FWD model, I do Cliche Corner as used by the Canadian car review duo: The Straight Pipes, and I feel very confident going around the sharp bends at 60-70km/h. I'd love to see you compare to the new Yaris 3-cyl some day. Interesting about the timing belt. I wonder if keeping it away from the atmosphere outweighs any corrosive effect of the oil so they don't call for replacement. Still sketch to me.
I like the emergency parking prawl disengage feature. Clearly the manufacturing quality is poor, but nobody expects that from Ford.

I'd like to see the new Yaris too but I don't think we are getting it in North America?
I'm sure Ford has done life cycle testing on the timing belt and other components. While it appears poorly constructed, it is designed to fail at the warranty+1 day
Most original owners wouldn't have the car at that point

@@speedkar99 No, we don't get the Yaris here in the US. It's just a dream, not a real request.
You think Ford's target democratic will only own this car for 36k miles? I'm sure they *intend* for it to last a little longer than that.

@@speedkar99 Thanks for answering. The control arm design sucks but it just makes the repair more costly. The timing belt would've been a deal breaker. I had the Ford Freestyle, which had a EGR valve hidden deep on the back of the engine. Replacing it costed a few hundred dollars. Appreciate very much your mechanical reviews.

I've worked in Ford's service department for 42 years. We are always asked for input on new vehicles when they come in. Like you, one of the first thing we noticed was the free floating fuel lines. We also noted they still use the stupid integrated turbo in the manifold that's been known for low mileage failure in other ecogerbil motors. If the manifold and/or turbo craps out on a 2.0 ecogerbil, repair costs are about $2300. The all-wheel drive system is still the same trouble prone system they've used for 14 years, at least it's serviceable now. Ford still builds solid trucks but these SUV's are just another "planned obsolescence" consumer product......get rid of it when the 5 year powertrain warranty goes out. I used to complain about the non-stop manifold repairs on the FE engines or the stupid variable venturi carburetors in the 80s. That's nothing compared to some of these vehicles they build today.
