Very good review very informative :) thinking to get one. Comparing looking also the Dodge Journey in four cylinder since the Journey has third seat. What can you say about the Journey ? thanks for your input :)
Your Camry! My dad got the same one, I'm starting to learn about cars, he doesn't give it any maintenance, so I would love to see you explaining that car so I could put my hands on it 😄
That’s what we call the real car review by someone who actually have the knowledge about the mechanical side of the car rather than someone talking about dual air vent and stuff
SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A MEDAL. i just bought a 2019 rav4 adventure. As someone who works on/modifys cars themselves, having this video helps out a ton to understand what work can/needs to be done in the future and most importantly, what can be handled at home. Love that the suspension in this vehicle isn't overly engineered, spark plugs/coils are easy to replace as are on most toyotas. I was previously driving an 01 Pathfinder and although its an awesome vehicle, spark plugs were a bit of a pain to get to.
This was an OUTSTANDING review for those of us who are looking to buy a new RAV4 and would like to do at least the routine maintenance on the vehicle ourselves. I'm HUGELY appreciative for the detail you went into in covering each of the vehicle's subsystems. I would love to see more like this.
I'm definitely not mechanical and don't understand half of what you're saying but let me say that I am thoroughly impressed with this review. Thanks for the phenomenal effort to put this review together!!!
This is the best technical/mechanical auto review I have ever seen. This is the stuff us gear heads want to know when shopping for a car. I could care less about how many USB ports and what size the back up screen is.Keep up the good work.
I know nothing about cars, but I recently bought this exact same one, same year too, 2019, and I want to make the effort to learn everything about it to keep it running smooth for a very long time. Thats how much I love my RAV4 ❤
I’ve had my 2019 now for 4 years. 60K. New fuel pump replaced on recall. No problems to report at this time. I live in the Colorado mountains. My dealership told me to get the transmission fluid changed soon. Running smoothly.
And boom! You answered my question within first 2 minutes of the video, “ now the clicking sound is actually from the direct injectors on warm up.” Thank you kindly!
The RAV4 is a surprisingly good off reader. It’s much better than many Body on Frame SUVs off road because it has good ground clearance, moderate size and weight.
I think most of us were hoping for something a little tougher than a car, but didn't want something as work-specific as a truck. So maybe not off-roading, but could hop the occasional curb or survive a heavily-rutted rural road if need be.
Tell that to my RAV4! It gets me up and down steep forest roads, some fairly rocky "jeep trails" per maps (I certainly classify them as such), across creeks, etc. But it is no rock crawler and I have turned around when it got to that point. But it does exactly what I bought it to do, get me places average vehicles cannot get so I can hike and bike. Great review. Thumbs up.
JJ, pretty sneaky deleting your comment so I can’t reply. I received the email, so I’m going to respond anyway. The 5th Gen RAV4 is more off road capable than many body on frame SUVs. I’ve had mine in the woods in the mud. I was on a game trail, not a gravel road. This would have completely destroyed a Civic or any sedan if it could even get traction. The 5th Gen RAV4 is a tough reinforced unibody utility.
I get the 0w16 oil from Walmart. It's mobile 1 brand around $28 for 5 quarts full synthetic or from the dealer that sells it by the quart for around $8. You will want to use this viscosity and mid or premium gas for optimal performance and engine protection.
Great overview on the Rav-4. It is good to see someone not only talking about the various mechanical systems in a car but taking some time to actually point out the actual systems in the vehicle. Great video, keep it up and please continue to present videos on more vehicles.
holy shit! i was just looking for videos on how to change engine oil, but i stumbled on a video with a guy who probably hacked into toyota databases and stole all the diagrams and specs and made a video talking about them in detail in 15mins! Toyota should hire this guy as a sales associate and turn every single customer into a mechanic. Nicely done!
these types of reviews are way better than "driving dynamic" reviews. Talking speed is about right, people don't know what your taking about wont know it anyways.
Amazing knowledge you have and good explanations to underbody parts. You put all the rest of the car channels to shame. This is what I want from a car review channel. Keep up the good work...
I have a 2020 RAV4. Didn't know it had both fuel injection systems. I like the plastic under the front end. It keeps things cleaner. You can buy Mobil 1 0W-16 at Walmart. I changed the original oil and filter using Toyota oil and filter for the warranty. I think Toyota used Mobil 1 at the one year " First oil change." The actual first oil change was in May of last year. "Oil is cheap, engines are expensive!" Many things I've noticed in 15 months of ownership. One I like is put the key in the ignition (mine is the base unit, no hybrid or extra flashy stuff) and before you turn the key on, the fuel pump primes the system. You can hear it. I replaced the interior lighting from dull incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs. Much better at night. The electric P/S is so nice and smooth! No pump, hoses, fluid, rack valves or other problems! I put Weather Tech floor mats front and rear, also cargo mat with the drop down "bib" to protect the outside. Last item is the upper cargo cover over the rear cargo area. Keeps things "under cover." Fuel mileage is very good. I like the MPG gauge between the tach and speedo. You can keep the "right now" mileage high which helps at the gas pump. Surprisingly peppy engine, with good acceleration! Step into the gas, it takes off quickly! However let up quickly after stepping into it, there's a definite amount of lag time before the transmission shifts to a higher gear, so the engine is left at a higher RPM. It is a light weight unibody vehicle which means you hear the road and feel the bumps while driving. But OVERALL, I'm very impressed with the vehicle and like it a lot! And the SiriusXM radio is GREAT also!
Finally a proper review. So sick of reviewers going on about soft touch surfaces and snotty attitudes towards anything but the highest priced specs. THAN YOU
I love all your videos but these reviews are so fantastic man! You deserve wayyyy more views. I don't know how popular it would be, but i would love to see you review older cars like a 90's Celica or something cheap that younger adults would be looking for.
Bravo! Finally what I was looking for. Mechanical review, not a 100 min discussion of "how much head room is available for passengers in the third row".
I like that it's one of the few engines left on SUVs of this class that still uses an aspirated engine. That's especially important on the hybrid. I honestly have no idea why you'd stick a turbo in a hybrid car, with all those thermal cycles. Toyota definitely knows what they're doing.
Have you done any videos where you do a sort of wrap up on a specific group of vehicles you have reviewed with overall pros/cons? I would be very interested in your opinion of which is the best engineered, based on mechanics, predicted reliability, etc. CX-5, Rav4, and Santa Fe are often reviewed together, but of course they do not go into the kind of detail that you're doing.
Number of strollers... soccer field acceleration... Great review. Not so sure I'm a fan of Toyota's new emphasis on on-demand, electric pumps & components or the ever-widening use of plastics, but your videos, THOSE I'm a great fan of. I miss the multi-tool, once known as an angle grinder, but now famous as various sizes of sockets, snap ring pliers and so much more, but this IS a new vehicle after all.
Really awesome...I own a 2020 rav4,was looking for something like your review, so glad to find your channel, you've a new subscriber, keep up the good work!
Cool video. Informative for most. On a side note. That foam engine cover isn't just any foam. Its engineered for heat dissipation as well as sound damping due to the loud direct injectors. A ton of people who have never heard direct injectors think their motor has a tick
Very informative and your insight and expertise is impressive. In addition to the overview, more commentary about potential problems related to mechanical design would be very beneficial to your subscribers. Good job.
OMG, you are the best in explaining the engine by far. Nobody does that. Everybody who reviewed the car then glossed over the engine. I love your video. By the way, you got some serious bugs stuck to your radiator fins :(.
That was beyond a doubt the best, most useful car review I've ever seen. Exactly what I want to know. The stroller humor stuff is an added bonus! Subscribing
Love the detailed look at the engineering. That engine layout under the engine cover is way neater than the Ford Escape, which no longer has a cover and it looks like crap.
I like the foam engine cover, its a super cheap way to deter countless dealer hours diagnosing the naturally ticking and tapping of direct injection from concerned owners
Really enjoyed the review. I was going to suggest putting a summary of the mechanical features described, but I just noticed you already did that in the video description. Hope you can get a steady supply of cars to continue to do these type of reviews.
The “beauty cover” over the engine I don’t really care about, I took mine off my Corolla. Must admit though I’m not too crazy about a plastic valve cover. Plastic gets old, dries out, cracks, and will eventually need to be replaced as the vehicle ages. Valve covers are an easy morning to remove and replace but still, I prefer metal.
I wouldn't worry about the plastics. Automakers know which plastics will last. My 2001 ford escape uses a plastic valve cover and intake and have never had any leaks or warping.
This is absolutely fantastic! Keep it up with these types of mechanical reviews. I have a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid and have been very curious about this type of a review.
Personally, I’d like to see the Ford Escape since it would make a nice comparison to the RAV4 video. Overall, it is nice to see these technical breakdowns of common vehicles. Most channels that go into tech specs concentrate on exotic cars that only rich and upper middle class people can buy.
Thank you for this in depth review. Great work breaking everything down. I look forward to your future videos and even though it seems scary that there is so much technology on these newer vehicles. We still have to learn how to maintain them because we know darn well mechanics cost an arm and a leg. Thank you again for everything.
I worked at a shameful shop attached to an infamous corporate villain that you are surely familiar with and we were told to just fill 'em with 0w20. I learned a lot in that shop, all concluding with: DO YOUR OWN MAINTENANCE IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR TO LAST.
Just wanted to point out that the engine cover is foam and not plastic to reduce engine noise for the 2019 model year, as it was a big complaint among owners. It does make quite the audible difference.
Awesome review! Good to see brothers toothbrush again. Is draining the atf essentially same procedure as on 2016 Highlander? - has the plastic straw and temperature range ~100-114 deg etc? Fill bolt looks totally different - is it located on drivers side wheel well? Thanks! Great video
Should be a very reliable, durable vehicle. No real failure points, and everything's pretty easily accessible (except for the steering rack). Great job, Toyota (and speedkar99).
We have a 2015 Mazda CX-9 with the Ford Cyclone 3.7 engine. Made it to 83,000 miles before the water pump went out and ruined the engine because it's located inside the timing cover. Glad to see Toyota didn't make that bonehead mistake with their engines.
It only just occurred to me the other day that the toothbrush, undies and other regular cast members are examples of the most neglected of the 3Rs: Reuse! I appreciate you reusing things considered "trash", comrade. It is in every way wise and moral.
@@speedkar99 The hybrid is the one outselling just about every vehicle on the street. The gas rav4 is fine, but it's not the main attraction. People would appreciate your approach and perspective.

"good luck finding 0w16 at Walmart" . You're right but I bet any money the dealer just throws 0w20 or 5w20 in it
Bulk oil
@@speedkar99 I did just buy 0w-16 at Walmart for it today.
When all new toyotas use 0w16 why would a dealer service center will have a problem buying 0w16 in bulk?
Walmart has 0w16.
Just wanted to point out that the engine cover is foam and not plastic to reduce engine noise for the 2019 model year, as it was a big complaint among owners. It does make quite the audible difference.
Keep up the informative vids bro... Great as always
Thanks bro
Awesome review! Good to see brothers toothbrush again. Is draining the atf essentially same procedure as on 2016 Highlander? - has the plastic straw and temperature range ~100-114 deg etc? Fill bolt looks totally different - is it located on drivers side wheel well? Thanks! Great video
More of these speedkar99 these are awesome! All the details from a mechanical point of view
Thanks for the encouragement
Should be a very reliable, durable vehicle. No real failure points, and everything's pretty easily accessible (except for the steering rack). Great job, Toyota (and speedkar99).
The steering rack is electric and they shouldn’t fail as often as the Fords do.
YO.. THIS IS AN AWESOME REVIEW!!!
DO ONE ON 2020 HYUNDAI ELANTRA!DO THIS FOR EVERY MANUFACTURER!!
Thanks.
I sure will.
I'm looking at Hyundai / Kia models next.
Outstanding review!!! Never have I watched any YT automotive review video PACKED with so much facts and information.
Thanks. More to come
We have a 2015 Mazda CX-9 with the Ford Cyclone 3.7 engine. Made it to 83,000 miles before the water pump went out and ruined the engine because it's located inside the timing cover. Glad to see Toyota didn't make that bonehead mistake with their engines.
The Nissan V6 also uses the same design. However, the water pump is not in the middle of the engine nor stressed by the timing chain.
It only just occurred to me the other day that the toothbrush, undies and other regular cast members are examples of the most neglected of the 3Rs: Reuse!
I appreciate you reusing things considered "trash", comrade. It is in every way wise and moral.
Yep I hate wasting
It's good to know Toyota doesn't have oil dilution problems😁
It sure is. Time will tell how this engine does.
Non turbo.
The best part of this video is the jeep commercial.
would like review on 2019 rav4 hybrid
Alot of people want to review the hybrid haha....what's so interesting?
@@speedkar99 The hybrid is the one outselling just about every vehicle on the street. The gas rav4 is fine, but it's not the main attraction. People would appreciate your approach and perspective.
speedkar99 because it’s AWD by default with better power, low RPM turk and still better efficiency. And only 800 bucks for all that.
The humor in these videos is great
Haha I'm glad you catch on
Need more reviews like this. Maybe Rav 4 hybrid?
If I can get my hands on any hybrid sure!
That would be great
You are a better car reviewer than others pretending to be... Just minimized that hand "Chris Fix"gesture..
Thanks. I'm glad you appreciate
Now this is my kind of car review!
A+ thank you! Subscribed!
You are welcome.
Hoping to have another one out next week.
You should review the Acura 2015-2020 Acura TLX 4 cylinder
Definitely would love to see more mechanical reviews of vehicles.
I sure am working on more. Thanks for letting me know
Great review man!
Thanks man
the electric brake booster was used on GM trucks some time ago
My local Walmart sells 0w16 oil now.
Good to know. What state?
@@speedkar99 California
Considering what this video is and who it is intended for, I would say it’s very good well done 👍
Amazing channel, I subbed, clicked like video!
Thanks for subscribing.
a NON TURBO engine, direct and port injected, that puts it at the top of my list for a new vehicle purchase!
Good list
That’s the main reason I bought a 2021 RAV4 Limited.😎
Dang, that was really good!!
It sure was. Thanks
Exceptional review...for people that do their own maintenance...
Thanks. And for those who appreciate the engineering behind cars
