YES! People look at me as crazy when they come to my apartment and see how little I actually own. I hate buying stuff. My mindset changed drastically a few years ago after a car accident and I was forced on sick leave. I'm back to work now, but living on a minimum income makes you really understand just how unimportant most materialistic things are - and it sticks 😂
Would love a deeper dive into our consumer culture and the devious advertising games they play on all of us. Most young people have no idea how they are being so manipulated. Love how aware you are and how you are educating all of us. Big fan of yours. Keep up the great work.
Companies love to make up problems and then sell you a solution. I keep getting toothpaste ads that are talking about a "tissue test," trying to imply that there's something wrong with your teeth if they're not paper white. Teeth aren't supposed to be that white. No one's teeth are naturally that white. As long as my dentist tells me my teeth are fine, why the hell should I be concerned about what color they are? It's so stupid.
I got rid of all social media and my life started to change. It’s strange how much social media affects you. It’s a stain an addiction on people’s lives total destroys life
I agree, social media can be a burden disguised as something fun. Keep in mind though that TH-cam is also considered social media. . . and you are here.
@@MaxEvans-cz2no that is correct but I also run a channel which earns for me and is a fun passion project for me outside of normal working. So I accept TH-cam, I also pay for premium which means I don’t get adverts if I’m watching videos that relax me or give me life advice like this video. :)
6:42 “i can only do so much my time with two kids under two before my body starts to freak out” … a message to anyone who says “my wife doesn’t work, she’s a stay at home mom”
I agree that striving for stuff to fill an emotional void is futile but to push back a little ,it seems you do enjoy your shiny house and car because they are featured in every video There is certainly nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with beautiful things if you so choose
Would agree with you on these points. The social media influencers have created a society that has actually lost their minds. Explore the Stanley cup chaos articles. So ridiculous.
😊 I appreciate you so much. You have encouraged me to change aspects of my life that I need to change. I went an entire week without buying fast food, or coffee. You give me hope. I can't thank you enough.
I can totally confirm this. Saved much more money and in the end I asked myself "why have I bought so many games? Most of the time I dont even remember all details...so why did I played them in the first place?" And it costs so much time to get rid of them and you dont get the full price back. In the end it was a minus/minus thing to me. Buy less and win more time and space!
To be fair, I don't remember the most games I played. There are at maximum 1-2 all-time-favorite games a year, that are really worth playing. Several years ago I was an achivement hunter or 100% gamer. Now I play only the subjective 10/10 games and I find these more often in the indipendant sector instead the AAA sector. This saves me a lot of time and mony.
One of the most annoying things I’ve noticed is how many phones get released and how much we all upgrade. I am guilty of upgrading yearly. I hand my phone down to my son year after year. What I wish there was, was a company that could still make advancements to the phones internals all while using the same battery. Batteries don’t change much in size so keeping the same battery would allow us to keep getting it replaced making the phone usable for much longer than phones are now. I also realize that’s hard because the company wouldn’t grow if the profits didn’t increase year over year.
that was one thing that really hit me once when reading Joshua Becker's minimalism books, all these junky amazon-purchases and all these clothes and just stUff we buy in this new era of excessive consumerism are just gonna either turn back into dust or turn into non-biodegradable junk heaps. and i think of archaeologists that find stuff from ancient or classical cultures and it makes me wonder what future archaeologists will find from this era we are in now. so much junk or polluting plastics and just so much duplicates of the same crap. it blows my mind. i feel like people never used to consume so many non-perishables at such a high volume ever before in history. unless you were a king that could afford to accumulate stuff but even thAt stuff was like solid metals or pottery n such that is biodegradable or natural and also required actual skill to make those things
the first thing i bought myself was a mustang as well. but it did make me happy and still is. its a reminder of how far ive come because im very frugal in the all other parts of my life

I move quite often, and it's always so hard for me with the packing, lifting, planning, and stress for weeks. Before the next move, I'll get rid of at least half of my belongings. I've always been interested in interior design, but I've started to look at things different now. When I see something I want to purchase, I think about the maintenance, storage, cleaning, and moving. Especially heavy furniture is a big no for me. It feels like a relief to not want to own things anymore.
“Rather, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” - Matthew 6:20.. Some food for thought. Material desire is fleeting.
Since almost one year i got on the carnivore diet, since than i spend money only for meat, rent, insurance, petrol, cellphone bill and gym membership. All clothes that i need and own can fit in one medium size suitcase plus laptop, chargers, cables, etc. phone, airpods and e-reader. Of course i would had to own much more if i don’t have everything provided in the house that i live in. Live gets easier when you remove clutter and you suddenly have a feeling that you have more free time after you keep only essentials
This is one of my Favorites! I used to be very empty. I tried shopping, boyfriends, food, I didn't know what was the matter because nothing satisfied me I had no Hope. But then I heard that I was loved by God and my whole outlook changed I now had worth and value as a person and had a purpose for living. I changed intrinsically instead of living on the outside. Good principles matter. Love your Leadership Gabe!
Yeah, I used to have a materialistic lifestyle because of Social influence in my 20s, Had friends that spent crazy amounts of money on old video games, figurines, and other assortments and i wanted to be like them. But as ive gotten older I've realized I started to appreciate the little things in life. As of now, I dont need to hold on to things anymore, Experiences, and family are the most valuable to me. Don't get me wrong though, I still love to decorate my home, but now im starting to get rid of things that are expensive and just for show.
I have ADHD and my condition makes it almost impossible to push myself todo what I really want todo. The few friends I have do not understand this and "just get on with it" is all hear. What I might "just get on with" is me self deleting because I can't continue to live like this. My home is a prison of pointless crap.
you should watch the movie the Man from earth. in the movie there is a teacher who is retiring and tells his colleagues he is really a 14,000 year old caveman who doesnt age. and in the movie they ask him dont u have any proof of your cavemen routes and he said stuff like that will not last forever it turns to dust eventually. so he had no proof that he was really this old. just his memories from that time period. the movie is very fascinating and u should watch it for sure!!
Great story telling skills, that's mostly why I watch your videos. I sometimes already know the concepts/ideas of what you are sharing but am still watching through because of this skill you demonstrate (and I'm trying to acquire). Also, calling a car a "shiny box" is a great way to see things how they really are.. thank you!
Hamster wheels? They're 12 inches. And you know why thats important? Because hamsters on a small wheel will have their backs curved and thats painful. Hamsters can run for miles everyday. So while we shouldn't be too materialistic, you should get good quality, reliable, essential things. You don't skimp on the wheel because paying for that wheel will serve you far longer and healthier than the cheap garbage small wheel. Honestly I'm not really considered minimalist, but I do mainly buy essential things only and leave nonessential things to a minimum. Most of my happiness is internal, enjoying nature or creating things. Materialism doesn't work like that.
I am 34 years old with a net worth of 5.6 million. I literally own 56 things in my apartment. My most expensive thing I have is my gaming computer which cost $1500. I don’t have a car, as I take public transport. My condo in NYC is paid off. Always watch what you spend and only spend on what brings you joy.
I agree with the spirit of this video and there's no denying that we are all encouraged to pile on debt by being exposed to advertising and social media. However, one isn't in the top 1% of the world by simply being able to watch a TH-cam video. Anyone with an inexpensive smartphone in a country that allows TH-cam can watch videos here. Ultimately, you need a decent income regardless of debt and the absence of debt doesn't automatically mean you are free. There are plenty of people in poverty all over the world who are not in debt and not automatically free because they don't have it.

Recently did a wardrobe decluttering and was shocked by how many clothes I had that I was not even wearing. I felt ashamed.
It is shocking. I try to do this every year, and there's always stuff to give away... smh.😂
I don't hate buying things, I hate the guilt afterward.

Its good to note that experiencing it firsthand is still better... just be sure to get out of the trap asap after you enjoyed it..
Lot's of stuff won't make you happy. No debt and Lot's of Federal Reserve Notes will. I wish I had known this in my twenties.

The facade of American Society. The appearance that is maintained to conceal a less pleasant reality! Materialism is one aspect of the fascade!
