It's been years since I welded. But, being, as my oldest grand daughter says, a bit of a goofball, I bought a small welder recently, and have fixed a handrail with it so far, and that's about it. I'm now recovering from open-heart surgery (not related to the welder) but hope to do more welding soon. Being a computer nerd and old now, I don't know how much I'll get. Me getting one, however, inspired one of my sons to pick up a better welder than I got. Now with that background, here's my point (yeah, I'm full of it): I wasn't going to watch this video. It looked like something I really won't ever need. Ever. But, frankly, this was one of my favorite This Old Tony videos, and I loved it. it was fascinating from start to finish, and I'm talking about more than just Tony's dry wit, which I love. I grew up with a brother with that type of humor. He's a rocket scientist -- one of the best in the world -- now retired from designing external booster motors for the space shuttle. He does stuff now like detect microscopic cracks in rebuilt Apache Helicopter rotors for the military. That's his hobby, but he makes a boatload of money doing it. He invented the machine that does it after buying a ground radar system for fun, then designing better antennas so it sees things in the earth differently. He hires that system out to universities to help with archeological digs.... Thanks for making a great set of videos that my wife even enjoys, though she understands almost nothing of the content. Long-winded I am. A computer geek I am having used nothing but Linux for the better part of the past 25 years.
Have you ever welded before? He had it on pulse so the ripples were perfectly spaced because his welder was adding them and just held the torch in the one position. He wasn't adding rod because it was a fusion weld. The only thing he had to do is maintain arch length. An 8 year old child could of welded that SS tube.
Gus bisbal, If I already knew I wouldn't be watching him, im not a moron... Oh wait... If I wanted to be a moron, then I would know exactly what he's doing then go on the comment section and call out those that don't? How about this..... If you're such a bad ass welder, then where is your videos?
Made ya angry hey? Oh well, guess this is upsetting for you. I am not doing a video to prove myself. have a guess why.... I never though or said you were a moron. Consider you called yourself that and it never entered my mind. Maybe don't be so negative with yourself and then you would have understood what I was saying, that he had automated the welding process and that is why it looked awesome. Have a look at Jody Coliers (weldingtipsandtricks) videos of a welding lathe with the torch on pulse and a clamp holding the torch and it looks just like His SS weld. and a person is not even involved in that
Gus- Definitely not upset, and I was calling you a moron! Reading and comprehension isn't your strong suit! Stick to welding like a 8 year old, after all you have a lot in common!

What do you do for your real job, whatever it is you are like;y excelling the same at that. Thank for the time and efforts you put into these.
You are a damn genius. I thought I had seen as good as TH-cam could get with Frank Howarth’s stuff, but you blow him out of the water in terms of video quality and production. Your humor is spot on. Plus, you are simply better at metalwork than he is with wood (and that’s saying a lot). Best stuff on the ‘net - thank you!!
Jesus, Tony. I keep wondering if your background is in video production. I can show your vids both to my wood working father and my girlfriend's 9 year old daughter and they are both mesmerized. How do you do it?
Aaron Baca I have to wonder! Anytime I see his profile picture pop up in my subscription box I know it's gonna be an interesting video. He's one of the very few TH-camrs who I watch every video no matter the topic
Aaron Baca I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he got some new software and wanted to push the limits. when it was over, I couldn't believe 33 minutes had gone by. Tony just produced a whole episode that rivals most shows you would see on cable but, he did it by himself in his spare time! Tony is a gifted man!
Coming back to rewatch some ToT classics and I realized that I recognized that "jail" setup at 1:07 from somewhere but I can't for the life of me figure out where.
Excellent idea... I sell and repair treadmills and have for nearly 20years and have recently taken to tig welding and came across your video. I’ve got 95% of these parts so will be making this for my new welding table... great inspiration on the idea and videography 👏👏👏
Great build and video. Seriously, you inspire me in ways no other TH-camr has. Your videos show that you are relatable, fallible, and human. And that gives me hope. Thanks for keeping it real.
I went back and watched this video for the second time and caught the Frank Howarth reference, which served as an introduction. I'm now binge-watching Frank's videos. I think I see where you got some of your inspiration for your excellent videography.
I built something like this about 20 years ago, it was primarily for welding hydraulic cylinders. But as I had to use parts available in the "junk" bin, I went with a hydraulic motor and gearing. (yeah hydraulics was our thing back then) and built an electronic box based on pwm with potentiometer to control the dutycycle and a load of mosfets in parallel to control the speed of the electric motor driving the pump. Surprisingly it worked really well. Very smooth, high torque, slow enough for welding, excellent result overall.
It might be prudent to insulate the ground clamp well, if the paint scratches off, it could cause some weld current to go through the chassis and ruin your gearbox.
Not really... the electrons will follow the path of least resistance, so as long as there's still a good connection through the shaft, no current will travel through the gearbox or bearings.
Your videos breath life into my tool loving world. Nothing like a video of some good cutting, welding, and machining after a long day of looking at code.
"Alright, that was a nightmare" I lost my shit. and yeah i totally feel like you have a background in cinematography, keep it up sir, i love your content.
Great build. Super video. Somebody years form now will find that thing and go crazy searching the internet for the brand as if it was a commercial model. \Better than TV, If we could get you and Clickspring Chris to post daily I would sell the TV. Jim
ToT you are an amazing guy! I just got my Miller 200DX today, now for a torch, visor and foot pedal and I'm going to follow in your footsteps! Thanks for the inspiration bub!
Just an idea but at my work, our welding lathe has a foot control to turn the turn table, you set the max rpm but the lighter the foot the slower it goes and it helps in those instances where your having trouble keeping up with your puddle We don't use foot pedals on our welders, only buttons on the torch so we set our amps, click the button to start the arc and get the puddle going then we press on the foot control for the turntable I recently found your channel and I've been binge watching, keep up the awesome and funny content, thanks
My wife is staring at me with a perplexed look. I then realize, I have just squealed like a little girl, when the "This Old Tony " notification popped up.
"Tony, you're gonna wish you had a ten-turn poten-...oh, never mind!" Very, very nice project, and the production is truly professional. Hands down better and more entertaining than any episode of "professionally" produced TV, plus an Avon79 chuck. Thanks.
i don't know why but yellow makes things look lighter (as in weight) i would imagine i would underestimate the weight of that thing if i went to pick it up.
For your remote speed control you could add a plug to your main unit and use a potentiometer mounted on a bracket that clamps to the handpiece. I made one for our rotator at work using an old extension lead and grafted a linear/slide potentiometer into the MIG handpiece(worked well but too delicate and not universal), second version was a small bracket to clamp directly to the handpiece housing a rotary potentiometer. I found that worked great, also works well with the TIG. Another option could be to make one with an arduino and 2-3 buttons for speed control(faster, hold, slower/ speed up, stop, slow down). Cool videos though, I also didn't realise how long I had been watching. lol Keep up the great work!
Absolutely ❤ it. What I appreciated the most was your thought process and creativity of a well trained mindset of Mechanical Engineer and master Machinist par excellence. Kudos Thank you for sharing.
Iv resorted to re-watching all your content again... For like the 4th time. I know there are tons of over creators out there, but they just don't scratch that science/math/machining/comedy/engineering/problem solving/teaching and making scrap, itch, that I get from your content.
Hi - I know this was done a long time ago, but... Could you make a small 3 point pipe clamp with brass wheels for a ground clamp on the shaft. This would leave a lot of room to fit a 90º gas swivel fitting on the end??!! Oh - you could also plug in an MP3 player so that "Unchained Melody" ('Ghost' Soundtrack) from the Righteous Brothers plays when you turn it on....
Man this has gotta be one of the coolest videos I've ever seen. It looks like a production Machine. I can tell that you have been taught very well and I look forward to seeing every video from you to come.
I really like that turntable build. There's been times that I could have used something like that. Going to dig through all my junk see if I've got enough stuff to build one of those thanks for the inspiration
Great video and great project. I like the welding observations you shared in this one. I'm kind of a middlin' welder - not a beginner, but I have a lot to learn. I've done a number of projects that required enclosures and that come with a million decisions like how does it open/close, power entry module, power LED. So, It was nice to see someone clever like you step through that process. I was super surprised to see the ground method was just to let your clamp ride. Didn't see that one coming. Also, I would love to hear how the problem of purge gas gets addressed. Keep up the great videos. I'm a huge fan!!
Somehow, this was in my suggested videos bar and not in my subscriptions as it damn well should be. This is yet another small thing to blame on time traveling shenanigans.
Another gem!! I wouldn't have welded the box, just in case but that's me. As a kid I could never bring myself to glue airfix models together, even now the wallpaper is nailed to the wall, just in case it needs adjusting later. Yes, I do crosswords in pencil too. Then again I'm only working in three dimensions.

A computer geek I am having used nothing but Linux for the better part of the past 25 years.
thanks Karl!
Those welds though!!!! Specially the stainless tubing!!!! King of kings!
yeah, that went super
I've watched this before, just checking what you used. I just can't get over how perfect that picture of Jody is. Priceless.
If you could do just a few more videos per week I'd drop my cable tv.
Art has to be when it''s ready.
Lee Steele do his some good dolar
Lee Steele he'd have to hire a production crew and quit his job to be able to do that
Lee Steele Hahahaha!!!!
Me too!
His videos are like hard drugs though. 30 seconds after I finish one, I want another sooooo bad!
Just watched this video, love your humor and style. The first thing that jumped to mind was a sewing machine foot pedal to control the rotational speed of the table. I am currently working through the incredible backlog of content and enjoying them all. Keep up the amazing work and don't change a thing.
god damn, I lost it when you had jody's head 'shopped onto an old-timey gentleman. Don't ever stop poking fun at all the other youtubers. I watch all their content compulsively, and have been for a few years now. Keep it up Ol' Tony!!
Thanks Preston!
I thought about taking a screenshot of that pose and sending it to Jody... along with and old pipe to see a reenactment on weldingtipsandtricks.
I’m so glad I found this channel man. I’m going thru these like crazy and I never want to run out.
Do you know AvE 's channel ? .. If not, go check it out, pretty sure you'll like it 😉
I REALLY dig YOUR personality (you're quite funny to listen to), and the way you produce your films (GOOD QUALITY, both video and audio). And besides, you also have a explanatory way to tell the things you do, as you seem very knowledgeable! They are ALL suiting ME very well!
Thanks for all your hard work, and please keep it up!
You're doing a fine job!
Thanks and thanks for watching Roland!
Tony, your eye for lighting and for what makes a great shot is really really shines in this one. I always enjoy your vids.
hahaha Imagine the conversation:
"Honey, guess what I got myself."
"Oh god."
"A rotary weld table!"
"Oh, thank god."
Tony, you've got some serious skills, man. I've got a good friend who is a tool and die guy. Very valuable folks to have as friends. I know I'm late to the party, but I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Frankly, you're a top tier producer in my books. Thanks for sharing.
Steve
Tony, every time I watch you it makes me want to get a TIG welder.
Why dont you? Everyone should have a tig!
@@datadavis I've looked at the prices for decent TIG welders before. Knocks the desire right out of me.
@@gamemeister27 a cheap one is better than nothing i suppose. wouldnt want to be without my migatronic pulse tig though, it was around 1200 euros. Though i got it for free when the company i worked for changed owners, haha.
Well This old tony ... just a quick hello from England.. a little town near Rochdale.... Manchester.... What a breath of fresh air you and your channel bring to you tube and people in general.... i think you are hilarious and v talented... your editing and metal manipulation skills are second to none my friend... i and a lot of people adore your channel... please keep it up . and Thankyou for your efforts... Dave from England...
Same goes for here.
Hey Tony please keep up the amazing and entertaining content! You've become pretty much my favourite TH-camr!
Thanks!
I love the table tony I built mine from 2 gm electric power steering motors from small front wheel drives and a wiper motor from a dodge 1/2 ton , I use a 18 volt dewalt drill speed control and battery to control the speed , it totally makes awesome welds every time , and it's totally portable , , I just did it as a side project because I watched your video , thank you so much for the amazing idea
I was showing my wife just now as we are going to bed and she said is that the spring guy? I had showed her the spring video when it came out and until about a minute in, she thought it was "how it's made". I also pointed out that you made the machine that was routing the plastic and she asked if you were married :-(
You should have said "Yes, to me.".
Men cant really do anything interesting while in a relationship. Always suffocated by swmbo's demands. Sad..
@@datadavis piss off
Great video, I very much enjoyed being a guest in the machinist mindset for 30 minutes 😊
Beautiful editing, music AND content. Perfection!
Oh, i have all your skills. & Tool Envy! I am a kid from a Dairy Farm, in the "Land between two Rivers" I'm currently a fiber artist in the village of 52151 (we think alike) I started cleaning plugs on OLD JD's at 5yr. A shop, choir, band geek in HS. An Industrial Technology major at Northern Iowa. Followed "her" to Hawkeyeville. Eventually was the President of IC Apple UG. I have the world's largest library of 65c02 software. I had a WOZ signed 2gs.
I got into IT Systems & Networking Engineering. Little places like Siemens. The whole world AD Tree. OMG! Even found those missing files from 1930 to 1945. Wheee! Did that for 25+ years. Now a fiber artist, with a 10 node Raspi network. Just ordered a 3d printer. Fully insane, scare girls, uber geek some times. Absolutely love your work! I got my knocks in Historic Preservation, living in an 1854 hand adzed red oak posts & beams, with 14" wide 16" OC Black Walnut edge cut slotted/pocked studs. An analog world with 160 years of un-fxxkng to do. Nice to meet you!
Who gives something like this a thumbs down...? Somewhere out there are fifteen people so far who are either insanely jealous of Tony's mad fab and video skilz, or who have serious fine motor skills challenges and meant to hit thumbs up instead.
Bad aim? I'm guessing those guys don't share a bathroom with a woman.
Another Golden Old Tony Episode. Awesome job, you make it look so easy when you put these together but the video content and explanation and just plain comfortable way you present make s me chase each and every Old Tony episode. What do you do for your real job, whatever it is you are like;y excelling the same at that. Thank for the time and efforts you put into these.
You have the best thumb toes on TH-cam!
hah
You are a damn genius. I thought I had seen as good as TH-cam could get with Frank Howarth’s stuff, but you blow him out of the water in terms of video quality and production. Your humor is spot on. Plus, you are simply better at metalwork than he is with wood (and that’s saying a lot). Best stuff on the ‘net - thank you!!
thanks Ron!
Arron Baca, by chance were you in a game community called Iron Phoenix?
Aaron Baca I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he got some new software and wanted to push the limits. when it was over, I couldn't believe 33 minutes had gone by. Tony just produced a whole episode that rivals most shows you would see on cable but, he did it by himself in his spare time! Tony is a gifted man!
This guy is doing TH-cam correctly, entertaining AND informative :D
Oh man Tony really is some kind of magician...he makes a 33 min video feel like 3 min...just amazing
Coming back to rewatch some ToT classics and I realized that I recognized that "jail" setup at 1:07 from somewhere but I can't for the life of me figure out where.
@CobetcknnKolowski
I love watching old TOT movies, and reading comments. That "ring jail" is called the Krypton prison for Superman.
Oh how the turn tables...
Excellent idea... I sell and repair treadmills and have for nearly 20years and have recently taken to tig welding and came across your video. I’ve got 95% of these parts so will be making this for my new welding table... great inspiration on the idea and videography 👏👏👏
"Thought I'd play it safe. The neighbors car is yellow" haven't laughed so hard all year. Great work, keep it up
Well it is now.
Great build and video. Seriously, you inspire me in ways no other TH-camr has. Your videos show that you are relatable, fallible, and human. And that gives me hope. Thanks for keeping it real.
Excellent video and cool project. Thank you for sharing!
I went back and watched this video for the second time and caught the Frank Howarth reference, which served as an introduction. I'm now binge-watching Frank's videos. I think I see where you got some of your inspiration for your excellent videography.
Oh man. So good. Brilliant job!
Thanks Retro!
Don’t down your self about weld you literally have knowledge on everything with manufacturing and everything you make badass I love it!
I never knew one could be sexually attracted to welds
I built something like this about 20 years ago, it was primarily for welding hydraulic cylinders. But as I had to use parts available in the "junk" bin, I went with a hydraulic motor and gearing. (yeah hydraulics was our thing back then) and built an electronic box based on pwm with potentiometer to control the dutycycle and a load of mosfets in parallel to control the speed of the electric motor driving the pump.
Surprisingly it worked really well. Very smooth, high torque, slow enough for welding, excellent result overall.
these videos are masterpieces. really well done!
Glad we have old videos to enjoy during this time. No matter what we all hope you are doing well. Can't wait to hear from you
It might be prudent to insulate the ground clamp well, if the paint scratches off, it could cause some weld current to go through the chassis and ruin your gearbox.
soupisgdfood first thing i thought off when i saw it
Not really... the electrons will follow the path of least resistance, so as long as there's still a good connection through the shaft, no current will travel through the gearbox or bearings.
Your videos breath life into my tool loving world. Nothing like a video of some good cutting, welding, and machining after a long day of looking at code.
"Alright, that was a nightmare" I lost my shit. and yeah i totally feel like you have a background in cinematography, keep it up sir, i love your content.
Love your videos Tony. I've seen this video I don't know how many times and it's great every single time!
"Mid-life crisis" is so far back in my rear view mirror I don't even remember it ...too good.
Just an idea but at my work, our welding lathe has a foot control to turn the turn table, you set the max rpm but the lighter the foot the slower it goes and it helps in those instances where your having trouble keeping up with your puddle
We don't use foot pedals on our welders, only buttons on the torch so we set our amps, click the button to start the arc and get the puddle going then we press on the foot control for the turntable
I recently found your channel and I've been binge watching, keep up the awesome and funny content, thanks
*has super expensive tools and seemingly unending resources*
*builds fancy lazy susan*
I really like the edited 3d sketches over the unfinished product. keep up the good work!
Really Tony? no music came from that turntable? I was waiting for it the whole 33 minutes...
I know. and ashamed.
Pfff... I waited 33 1/3 minutes!
33 1/3 RPM XD I get the joke.
@@mattmanyam I see what you did there 😁👍
One thing I realized would be super useful if I made my own: A spindle thru hole, like on a big lathe, allowing you to spin long sections.
Nearly spilled my tea with that yellow car joke lol
I really liked your sand paper assortment and the cutting of the aluminium, on the other hand it looks great.
Thanks.
i don't know why but yellow makes things look lighter (as in weight) i would imagine i would underestimate the weight of that thing if i went to pick it up.
yes it's quite 'dense'!
Cool videos though, I also didn't realise how long I had been watching. lol
Keep up the great work!
It is scary how much I enjoyed this video. Hopefully my wife doesn't read this...
Absolutely ❤ it. What I appreciated the most was your thought process and creativity of a well trained mindset of Mechanical Engineer and master Machinist par excellence. Kudos Thank you for sharing.
I love your builds! Thanks for the amazing videos.
Thanks Simon!
And just like that.... 33 minutes of my life was spent. But as always, with a spell binding video!
The content of your videos are amazing. I am presently recovering from an operation and thanks to you, these are keeping me entertained.
you deserve a million subs!
He's getting close!
I really like that turntable build. There's been times that I could have used something like that. Going to dig through all my junk see if I've got enough stuff to build one of those thanks for the inspiration
Abom could attach couple peaces of leather and wear that 4jaw as a wrist watch
